Skills Gained in English 1301

Throughout English 1301, the student learned many things about literature and research methods. For each project, the student gained new skills, whether through their own work or feedback from others. The first project introduced multimodal design, and feedback helped the student improve their use of videos. The next project taught research skills like finding reliable sources and incorporating research effectively. The final project allowed the student to apply the skills gained, like multimodal design and research. Overall, the student is grateful for learning skills in English 1301 that will help in their continued studies.

Throughout English 1301 I have been able to learn many things about the world of literature and

have also been able to expand my knowledge of proper research methods. Throughout the production

of each and every one of the projects created this year I have been able to learn something new.

Whether it was on my own or through feedback given to me by my classmates and professor I was

always able to pick up on a new skill throughout my work.

This started of course with the first project assigned being the literary narrative. This was my

first time being introduced to the topic of multimodal and how it functions and how to create something

using it. When I created my first rough draft for the project, I had created only a small paragraph and

included a few pictures in order to achieve the multi modal aspect. It wasn’t until I had received

feedback from the professor on how more can be used to make an object multimodal than just a few

pictures. He had recommended I use videos for a few of my examples and I listened and began to

implement important clips from the shows and movies/books I had used. After doing this I realized the

greater impact it had on my project and how it boosted my message heavily. Through this feedback and

project, I was able to learn how to properly create a multimodal object.

Our next project was based on our own personal process of either reading, writing, or learning. I

had decided to write about my process of reading for this project. The things I was able to learn from

working on this project were the importance of doing proper research on certain topics and how to

properly give a background on authors and researchers. Going through articles and research papers I

was able to learn how to differentiate a reliable source from an unreliable one. I was also able to learn

about how to properly implement researched topics into an essay and how to use them in a way to help

benefit the point you are trying to make. The majority of my feedback with this project came from my

classmates and they were able to help me perfect and learn more about the skills I had previously

picked up when starting on this project.

Our final project was the Artifact/Remix which was a continuation of the theory of writing

project. This project was a chance for me to show all the skills I had been able to pick up during the

creation of my two previous projects. I was able to use my ability to create a multimodal presentation

and use my research skills as well. I believe that through this project I was able to learn more about the

things I had previously learned and how to properly execute them together.

In conclusion I am very grateful for my time in English 1301. By being in this class I was able to

pick up on skills I wouldn’t have been able to anywhere else. I am certain that these will definitely help

me out throughout the remainder of my time in college.
