Economic Impact of El Nido Tourism

Tourism and hospitality were major economic sectors for Palawan province in the Philippines prior to COVID-19. El Nido, a protected area in Palawan, was a popular tourist destination known for its natural beauty. The pandemic halted tourism which negatively impacted farmers and fishermen who relied on tourism dollars. It also provided an opportunity for the local ecosystem to recover from impacts of tourism. Sustainable tourism development in Northern Palawan could promote development but legal guidelines and environmental protections must be followed to minimize ecological impacts and overexploitation of protected areas.

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF TOURISM AND

HOSPITALITY IN :

“El nido PALAWAN”

Tourists like spending moment in the sun for a change, sunbathing and touring attractions.
When it comes to natural resources and tourism attractions, the Philippines are more than enough. The
most exciting aspect of visiting the Philippines is meeting the Filipinos, who will be delighted to welcome
you. Palawan, an island province of the Philippines in the MIMAROPA area, is one of the country's
beautiful beaches. In terms of total jurisdictional area, it is the country's biggest province. Puerto
Princesa City is the capital, however it is managed separately from the province.

Many people are aware that El Nido is a protected area, and that the technical, social,
political, environmental, and economic elements are all influenced by ecotourism development.
Agriculture, fishing, and tourism were the province of Palawan's main economic sectors prior to COVID-
19. The tourism industry, in particular, was rapidly expanding and projected to generate local jobs as
more tourists visited the island. Travel + Leisure magazine named Palawan as the number one travel
destination in their 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2020 editions. The relationship between tourism and agri-
fisheries in Palawan became increasingly apparent during the COVID-19 epidemic. Because of the strong
demand for farm goods and fisheries, tourism had been generating local revenue and jobs. Farmers and
fishermen are unable to sell their produce and catch since tourism has halted owing to the epidemic.
This is made worse by local travel limitations, as the items cannot be transported to markets in Puerto
Princesa or Manila. Young Palaweos can re-learn lost skills and understand the necessity of agriculture
and fisheries for food security as a result of this experience. Another possibility for long-term
development on the island is for individuals to begin selling their wares online. The reduction in fishing
and agricultural operations offers the ecosystem a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to recover. There are
several plans for the development and protection of El Nido, but the majority of them have yet to be
realized. There are several laws and procedures in place to protect and develop El Nido, but
enforcement is lacking. To minimize ecological disruption and overexploitation of a protected region,
tourism activities are restricted. Excessive usage of pump boats for island hopping has a detrimental
influence on the maritime environment. As a result, non-disturbing activities on marine life, such as
kayaking and mountain climbing, should be encouraged.

Tourism development in Northern Palawan, it is determined, can give an excellent chance to

promote sustainable development. The legal guidelines, however, must be satisfied for effective
deployment. Environmental monitoring and EIA processes must be followed correctly and completely.
The government must take the lead in the construction of basic infrastructure. To reap the benefits of
tourist growth, local workforce must be cultivated. Local governments and communities must be
involved in the design, investment, operation, and administration of infrastructure projects. In addition,
the private sector must be mobilized for investment and development.
