READING COMPREHENSION

Passage 1
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was perhaps the best-known American poet of
the nineteenth century. His clear writing style and emphasis on the prevalent values of the
period made him popular with the general public if not always with the critics. He was
particularly recognized for Line his longer narrative poems Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha,
and The Courtship of Miles Standish, in which he told stories from American history in terms of
the values of the time.
Evangeline was set during the French and Indian War (1754–1763), when the British forced
French settlers from Nova Scotia; two lovers, Gabriel and Evangeline, were separated by the
British, and Evangeline devoted her lifetime to the search for Gabriel. With its emphasis on
sentimental, undying love, Evangeline was immensely popular with the public.
In The Song of Hiawatha, Longfellow depicted the noble life of the American Indian
through the story of the brave Hiawatha and his beloved wife Minehaha. The tear-inspiring
poem follows Hiawatha through the tragedies and triumphs of life, ending with the death of
Minehaha and Hiawatha’s departure into the sunset in his canoe. The Courtship of Miles
Standish takes place during the early period of the settlement of New (15) England, a period
which was viewed as a time of honor and romance. In this poem centered around a love
triangle, Miles Standish asks his friend John Alden to propose to Priscilla Mullins for him; John
Alden ends up marrying Priscilla Mullins himself, and it takes time for his friendship with
Miles Standish to recover. As with Longfellow’s other narrative poems, the emphasis on high
ideals and romance made the poem extremely popular.

Passage 2
Bees, classified into over 10,000 species, are insects found in almost every part of the
world except the northernmost and southernmost regions. One commonly known species is the
honeybee, the only bee that produces honey and wax. Humans use the wax in making candles,
lipsticks, and other products, and they use the honey as a food. While gathering the nectar and
pollen with which they make honey, bees are simultaneously helping to fertilize the flowers on
which they land. Many fruits and vegetables would not survive if bees did not carry the pollen
from blossom to blossom.
Bees live in a structured environment and social structure within a hive, which is a nest
with storage space for the honey. The different types of bees each perform a unique function.
The worker bee carries nectar to the hive in a special stomach called a honey stomach. Other
workers make beeswax and shape it into a honeycomb, which is a waterproof mass of six-sided
compartments, or cells. The queen lays eggs in completed cells. As the workers build more cells,
the queen lays more eggs.
All workers, like the queen, are female, but the workers are smaller than the queen. The
male honeybees are called drones; they do not work and cannot sting. They are developed from
unfertilized eggs, and their only job is to impregnate a queen. The queen must be fertilized in
order to lay worker eggs. During the season when less honey is available and the drone is of no
further use, the workers block the drones from eating the honey so that they will starve to
death.

Longfellow's use of romance and honor in his poems contributed to solidifying American cultural identity during the 19th century by drawing on themes that resonated deeply with the burgeoning sense of national identity. These themes provided stories where American values were celebrated and idealized, fostering a cultural narrative that prioritized virtues like fidelity, moral integrity, and bravery. By tying these ideals to distinctly American historical contexts and settings, Longfellow crafted a literary image of America that was aspirational and unifying, contributing to the cultural cohesion and self-perception of the American public in an era of significant growth and change .

The queen bee's reproductive role is crucial for maintaining the hive’s demographic balance, as she is the sole fertile female capable of laying eggs. Her ability to control the fertilization of eggs allows her to regulate the production of worker bees versus drones, ensuring that the hive's needs for labor and reproduction are met efficiently. By producing more workers than drones, the queen supports the hive's collective work efforts and survival. This selective reproduction maintains a balance between the numbers of workers, who perform essential tasks, and drones, whose numbers can be minimized when not needed .

Longfellow's historical narratives reflect contemporary values by embedding societal ideals within stories set in the past, using historical events as a backdrop to explore themes such as love, bravery, and honor. By romanticizing historical episodes, he reinforced values like sentimentality and moral integrity, which resonated with the ideals of the 19th-century American public. His portrayal of historical figures and events through a lens of idealism and high moral standards made his poems not just a reflection on history, but a commentary on the values admired by society at the time .

Honeybees benefit agriculture and the environment primarily through pollination. As they gather nectar and pollen, bees facilitate the fertilization of flowers by carrying pollen from one blossom to another. This is crucial for the survival of many fruits and vegetables, which depend on this process for reproduction. Additionally, the products bees create, such as honey and beeswax, have various uses for humans. However, their role in pollination is vital for maintaining biodiversity and food crops .

The social structure within a bee hive is meticulously organized, contributing to its survival and efficiency. Worker bees are multitaskers responsible for collecting nectar and transforming it into honey, constructing honeycombs, and tending to the queen and her brood. The queen's primary role is to lay eggs, ensuring the hive's population is sustained. Drones, whose only function is to mate with the queen, are allowed to starve when no longer useful, conserving resources. This division of labor ensures that all necessary functions for the hive’s survival are efficiently addressed, maximizing productivity and resource use .

Longfellow's narrative style played a significant role in the public's positive reception of his work, as it emphasized storytelling and relatable themes over experimental or avant-garde literary techniques that might attract critical acclaim. His ability to weave compelling tales using clear, accessible language enabled readers from varied backgrounds to appreciate the stories' moral and emotional dimensions. In contrast, critics often sought more innovation or complexity in literary form, which Longfellow's straightforward approach and emphasis on sentimental themes did not fulfill. His focus on connecting with the average reader made him a celebrated poet among the public despite the critics' reservations .

Bees might be unable to survive in the northernmost and southernmost regions of the world due to the extreme cold, which impacts both their biological needs and the availability of food sources. Bees rely on flowers for nectar and pollen, which are scarce in these climates due to shorter growing seasons and harsh environmental conditions. Additionally, the cold can hinder their ability to maintain the necessary internal hive temperature and place immense stress on their physiology, making survival in such environments untenable .

The lifecycle of a drone bee is a clear example of resource allocation efficiency within a hive. Drones are males that develop from unfertilized eggs and have a singular purpose: to fertilize the queen. This specialization means they do not collect nectar or pollen and cannot sting. During seasons when food is plentiful, drones are maintained in the hive; however, when resources dwindle, drones are excluded from feeding on the hive's honey, ensuring that only bees crucial to the hive's survival (workers and the queen) consume limited resources. This seasonal culling of drones prevents unnecessary resource expenditure on non-contributing members of the hive .

By highlighting events from American history in his narrative poems, Longfellow not only celebrated the past but also reinforced contemporary social values, fostering a sense of national pride and identity. The integration of themes like love, honor, and bravery within historical contexts allowed readers to connect emotionally with the narratives, providing both entertainment and moral instruction. Moreover, by focusing on familiar historical periods, Longfellow bridged the past with the present, making history accessible and relevant to his audience .

Longfellow's poetry was popular among the general public because of his clear writing style and emphasis on the prevalent values of his time, such as honor and romance. His narrative poems, like Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha, and The Courtship of Miles Standish, told familiar stories from American history and depicted them in terms of these values, which appealed to the sentimental and idealistic tendencies of readers. Consequently, Longfellow's works resonated more with the public than with critics, who often judged literary merit on different criteria .
