Re: Instructional Staff Reconstitutions

Dear Instructional Staff Member at _______________ School,

As you may already know, earlier today Mayor Fenty and I announced restructuring plans for the
27 schools in NCLB restructuring status. Your school is one of seven schools that will undergo
an Instructional Staff Reconstitution. In this kind of reconstitution, instructional staff members
will be required to reapply for their positions for the 2008-2009 school year. This option may
also include your school’s administrative leadership staff; however, it does not include non-
instructional staff.

I am reaching out to you via this letter in order to be as clear as I can, as soon as I can, with
respect to your job status under this reconstitution. We are mindful that this is a difficult process,
and we are trying to provide you with the following information in a timely manner in order to
make the instructional staff reconstitution process as smooth as possible:

• The principal who will lead your school in the 2008-2009 school year will interview all
instructional staff members currently at the school to determine which staff members will
remain for the upcoming school year.

• It is expected that those hiring decisions will be finalized, and that you will be notified of
your status with regard to your current school no later than May 30th.

• If you are not retained at your current school, you will be designated as an involuntary
transfer, and guaranteed a position at DCPS for the 2008-2009 school year.

Please know that the foregoing does not impact your current assignment for the remainder of the
2007-2008 school year. It impacts your assignment for the new 2008-2009 school year.

Some of you may have no interest in remaining at your current school. Some of you may want to
begin investigating other placements. I encourage all of you to take advantage of the upcoming
hiring fairs beginning with one this Saturday, May 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Bell
Multicultural High School, 3145 Hiatt Place, NW. Other hiring fairs will take place on May 22nd
(for non-teaching staff including educational aides), May 31st, June 7th, and June 14th. Please
check [Link] for the times and locations of these fairs.

In addition, for those of you, who would like clarification about the process described above,
know that DCPS staff will be available at each hiring fair to answer your questions.

Thank you for your ongoing work on behalf of our children.

Sincerely,

Michelle Rhee
Chancellor
