MS System

The document describes three activities related to learning about the human skeletal system: 1. Locate and label the major bones of the axial and appendicular skeleton using a model and masking tape. 2. Color a skull outline using different colors for different areas to learn bone landmarks, comparing to an actual skull. 3. Palpate specific bone landmarks on oneself like the zygomatic arch and mastoid process to learn their locations.

SKELETON OUT OF CLOSET

The skeletal system functions as the basic framework of a body and the entire
body are built around the hard framework of Skeleton. It is the combination of
all the bones and tissues associated with cartilages and joints. Almost all the
rigid or solid parts of the body are the main components of the skeletal system.
Joints play an important role in the skeletal system as it helps in permitting the
different types of movements at different locations. If the skeleton were
without joints, then there would be no sign of the movements in the human
body.

ACTIVITY 1: Overview of the Human Skeleton

Materials: Masking tape, a pair of scissors, Human Skeleton

With a partner, locate the major bones of both the axial and appendicular region. Label the body
parts with reference to the model of the human skeleton.

ACTIVITY 2: Let’s Do Some Make Up!

Materials: Coloring materials, Human skull

Color the skull outline below like you are doing some make up. As much as possible, use different
colors for the different areas. Compare your output with an actual human skull. Have fun!

ACTIVITY 3: Palpating Skull Markings

Palpate the following areas on yourself

• Zygomatic bone and arch. Run your hand anteriorly from your ear toward your eye and feel the
zygomatic arch at the high point of your cheek just deep to the skin.
• Mastoid process. The rough area behind your ear.
• Temporomandibular joint. Place your nger directly in front of the external acoustic meatus,
and open and close your jaws to feel this joint in action.
• Mandibular angle. Most inferior and posterior aspect of your lower jaw.
• Nasal bones. Run your index nger and thumb again along the opposite sides of the bridge of
your nose until they “slip” medially at the inferior end of the nasal bones.
