The Town where I live right now is Key Largo in Florida United States.

The city is very small. It’s a tourist island in South Florida; it is beautiful and tranquil
town for staying one weekend or your whole life.

Talking about the environment in this moment certainly is intriguing because I think in
this moment the entire world needs to address that bigger problem or we will not have a
planet for our future generations to live.

I have seen how every year the town has increased in population, the levels of water
are coming up and we can’t stop it, because the global warming raises the level of the
sea every year, some homes will have to be elevated; talking about this with the
property owners obviously is not easy because many people have live on this island
their whole life and it can get very emotional.

“The Keys will cease to be a livable place long before its fully underwater,
according to Harold Wanless, a geographer at the University of Miami. “People
don’t have a concept of what sea level rise will do to them. They just can’t
conceive it,” he said. (Source the Guardian).

Other options the County has right now is to make a budget to collect more money and
it will make more and higher bridges, if Monroe County takes action cars will not be
under water in the future.

The amount of traffic is rises every month, the houses rises, too, it is a problem because
in small town all thing collapse.

If we can’t raise additional money then we will have to look at prioritizing.

Without a strategy, much of the Keys will become inaccessible. Only accessible by boat
and the islands may have to resort to floating structures and navigable canals to remain
viable. Maybe not in 2030 but this problem will happen by 2040 or 2050, I am absolutely
sure the islands in South Florida it will gradually disappear into a higher ocean.

Recommendation:

It is difficult for residents in this island to take measures about this problem that is
happening, because in part it’s the government who decided what we doing. How can
we help?

Well I think we need the recycler more; create a culture where our children care about
our environment; care about our sea, our ocean, our trees, our parks maybe in the
future and I have hopes we will have very good news about the environment but if it
does not happen now our future is very sad, if we do not change our mind about this
problem, we will not have a home, our children will not have a future, because the Earth
is the only place we have right now to live, we don’t have options for a home beyond our
planet.
Other mechanisms, to attempt to reduce the pollution in our city, is stopping the
construction of more houses in this island, because while is true that is good for the
income of the government, not is good for environment, it has directly affected the sea
level rise, the National Park Everglades will disappear, a place where hundreds and
hundreds of different animal species live.

I will be doing my part, and continue recycling and teaching younger people to create
and think differently; I will be keeping the beaches clean because, I believe deeply in my
heart that if we work together, we could change the world and it is the only world we
have right now.
