Magnetization Characteristics of Shunt Generator

The document describes an experiment to characterize the magnetization of a shunt generator. It provides the apparatus needed, including a voltmeter, ammeter, rheostat, tachometer and switch. It explains the voltage build up process and formulas for critical resistance and speed. The procedure is to connect the circuit and vary field excitation and speed, recording terminal voltage values to plot a graph and determine critical resistance and speed from the graph.

EXPERIMENT NO :- 4
AIM : To Perform Magnetization Characteristics of Shunt Generator.
APPARATUS :

Voltmeter (0-300V, D.C.) one

Ammeter (0-3A, D.C.) one
Rheostat (300Ω , 1.7A) one
Tachometer one
D.P.D.T. Switch one

THEORY:-

Voltage build up process is possible in d.c. shunt generator when it fulfills following condition.

• Residual magnetism is present in magnetic circuit.

• The field excitation is such that compound the field flux.
• For given resistance of the field circuit it is running at a speed higher than critical.

The initial voltage build-up E is expended in resistance & inductance of circuit, given by E = (I * R)
+ L * (di /dt) so far as E > I * R , the voltage will increase & the process is stopped at E = I * R,N at
given excitation for different value of speed excitation curve can be plotted. The tangent to curve at
initial part of characteristics will give critical resistance. The critical speed is given by

PROCEDURE :

• Make ckt connection as per diagram.

• Start the motor and adjust the motor speed by adjusting field regulator or by series
armature resistance.
• Increase field excitation from zero to max value and note the terminal voltage at no load.
• Plot a graph of E vs If at given speed calculate critical resistance by drawing tangent to
this curve.
• Obtain critical speed and resistance of field winding to built 240 V at no load.
