Team Structure

There are three main team structures for organizing project teams: 1. Democratic decentralized (DD) structure with fewer members and no dedicated leadership. 2. Chief programmer team structure where a lead programmer makes technical decisions and assigns work. 3. Mix control team organization with control decentralized (CD) and control centralized (CC) structures, where CD involves groups in decision making and CC has top-level management make decisions with little group involvement. The best structure depends on the problem - DD is best for difficult problems while CD or CC may work for simple problems.

Team Structure
Team structure addresses the issue of arrangement of the individual project teams. There are some possible
methods in which the different project teams can be organized. There are primarily three formal team
structures:

DD Democratic decentralized
Chief Programmer Team
Mix Control Team Organization
CD Control decentralized
CC Control centralized

DD (Ego-Less)
less members (max 10-12)
when no leadership
equivalent education / same qualification
same level of communication
usually no dedicated client and it is based on research based

Chief Programmer Team

The chief programmer is essential for all major technical decisions of the project.
He does most of the designs, and he assigns coding of the different part of the design to the
programmers.
The backup programmer uses the chief programmer makes technical decisions, and takes over the chief
programmer if the chief programmer drops sick or leaves.
This structure considerably reduces interpersonal communication.

Mix Control Team Organization (Hierarchical Team Structure)

suitable for large team sizes

1. CD

Team has a specific leader whose primary task is to divide the project into tasks and assign
groups to accomplish them.
The communication in group will be horizontal and between groups, communication will be
vertical.

Here groups and individuals are involved for decision making and problem solving.

2. CC

The structure is almost similar to CD, but communication and involvement differs.
Communication is always vertical
There is very little or no involvement of groups in decision making.
Decision are made by top level management people.

CC encourages less innovation compared to DD.

CC structure completes tasks faster, it is the most adept at handling simple problems.

Control Decentralized teams generate more and better solutions than individuals. Therefore such teams have
a greater probability of success when working on difficult problems.

Since the CD team is centralized for problem solving, either a CD or CC team structure can be successfully
applied to simple problems.

A DD structure is best for difficult problems.
