Civil Eng. Column Design Guide

This document provides the design steps for an axially loaded column. It begins by providing sample given data and required outputs. The 8 steps outlined are: 1) assume steel percentage, 2) calculate gross concrete area, 3) check slenderness, 4) assume column width, 5) calculate steel area, 6) design lateral ties, 7) check minimum eccentricity, and 8) calculate bar spacing. An example is then provided applying the steps to sample given data for an f'c of 20 MPa, fy of 500 MPa, 3m floor height, and 500 kN load. The outputs are a 230x300mm column with 4-16mm bars and 6mm ties

DESIGN OF AXIALLY LOADED COLUMN
GIVEN DATA - fck, fy, L, P
REQUIRED - b x d, Asc, Ash

1. ASSUME PERCENTAGE OF STEEL (1% TO 2%) OF Ag

2. CALCULATE Ag GROSS AREA OF CONCRETE + STEEL
Pu=1.5P
THEREFORE TO CALCULATE Ag,
Pu=0.4 Fck Ag + (0.67 fy – 0.4 Fck) Asc.

3. CHECK SLENDERNESS OF COLUMN

Le/L.L.D ≤ 12 SHORT COLUMN

> 12 LONG COLUMN

4. ASSUME WIDTH OF COLUMN

b(min)=230 mm & calculate D
5. CALCULATE Asc=1-2% OF Ag
WHERE Asc IS AREA OF STEEL IN COLUMN

CALCULATE NO. OF BARS AS LONGITUDNAL REINFORCEMENT

Asc(MIN)=0.8% &
Asc(max)=4% PREFERABLY OR 6%

6. LATERAL TIES

I) [Link] TRANSVERSE REINFORCEMENT= фsh=1/4 of фm(main)or 6mm

Whichever is greater

II) PITCH
i) L.L.D }
ii) 16 фm } Whichever is less
iii) 300 mm }
7. CHECK FOR MINIMUM ECCCENTRICITY
e(min)=L/500 + b/30 ≥ 20 mm } X direction
<0.05b }

e(min)=L/500 + D/30 ≥ 20 mm } Y direction

<0.05D }

8. ASSUME THE CLEAR COVER dc=40mm & CALCULATE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BARS

(B-40-40-ф) < 300mm

DESIGN OF AXIALLY LOADED COLUMN
GIVEN DATA – fck=20, fy=500, Floor to floor height=3000, P=500kN
REQUIRED - b x d, Asc, Ash

ASSUME PERCENTAGE OF STEEL (1% TO 2%) OF Ag

Let Asc=0.01 Ag
1. CALCULATE Ag GROSS AREA OF CONCRETE + STEEL
Pu=1.5P=1.5x500=750 kN
THEREFORE TO CALCULATE Ag,
Pu=0.4 fck Ag + (0.67 fy – 0.4 fck) Asc=0.4x20xAg + (0.67+500-0.4x20)x0.01Ag=750x103
8Ag+3.27Ag=750x103
Ag=66548.35mm2
3. ASSUME WIDTH OF COLUMN

Let, b=230 mm & calculate D

D=66548.35/230=289.34mm

Say D=300mm

4. CHECK SLENDERNESS OF COLUMN

Le/L.L.D=(0.85x2700)/230=9.98 ≤ 12

∴ Design a SHORT COLUMN

5. Calculate Longitudinal reinforcement Asc=1-2% of Ag
Where asc =0.01x230x300=690mm2
Asc(min)=0.8% & Asc(max)=4% preferably or 6%
No. Of bars =690/201=3.43 say 4
Provide 4-16ø as longitudinal reinforcement.
6. Lateral ties
I) [Link] transverse reinforcement= фsh=1/4 of фm(main) or 6mm whichever is greater
Фsh=1/4 of фm(main)=0.25x16=4mm
6mm is greater, ∴ Take 6mm dia. bars
II) pitch
i) l.L.D=230mm }
ii) 16 фm =16x16=256mm whichever is less
iii) 300 mm }
∴ Provide 6mm dia. Lateral ties at 225mm c/c.
7. CHECK FOR MINIMUM ECCCENTRICITY
Longitudinal reinforcement
ex=L/500 + D/30 ≥ 20 mm } about major axis
subjected to minimum 20mm

ex=(2700/500) + (300/30) =15.4mm < 20mm

ey=L/500 + b/30 } about minor axis
subjected to minimum 20mm
ey=(2700/500)+ (230/30)=13.06mm < 20mm

8. ASSUME THE CLEAR COVER dc=40mm & CALCULATE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BARS
As the dimension of column is 230mmx300mm distance between the bars is less than
300mm
300mm

230mm

4-16mm ø

6mm ø lateral ties @225mm c/c
