How was ‘compass’ a useful device for mariners?
‘The compass was an important in navigation for
mariners because it allowed mariners to determine

astronomical cues such as the North Star. It uses a
magnetic needle that can turn freely so that it always
points to the north pole of the Earth's magnetic field.

How has the GPS (Global Positioning System)
changed our lives?
Technology advances and affordability makes it
accessible for each of us to own a GPS device. For
those who do not know what GPS actually is, in a nut
shell, a tracking system created by the U.S.
government for spying that finally in the 80s was
‘opened up to the public to use. It consists of three
parts: satelites that orbit the Earth, Monitoring
stations, and the actual GPS unit. GPS is not limited
to means of travel but also quite prevalent
throughout our society. GPS systems help the
individual locate points of interest. For instance, one
can seek for desired places to stop in the cities in
Which you visit. If you need medical care, you can
find a hospital through GPS. Searching for points of
interest on a GPS is quite a benefit of its own. As long
as GPS are not treated as devices without error, this
technology makes life easier and a little less stressful
when trying to get from point A to point B. GPS is,
used for business purposes for many different
reasons. It has helped our business world become
more successful. Many GPS products are being used
by businesses and government agencies to track
their vehicle locations using wireless
‘communications.
GPS has made a huge impact in our society. It has
changed the way people communicate and live. GPS
has made our environment a more safer and easier
place to live. GPS is being used to help parents find
and keep track of their children and is being installed
as a location device in cars and in cell phones to
assist people in mapping and directions.

What features of North America make it the most
advanced continent of the world?
North America is abundant in natural resources,
including mineral wealth, fresh water, vast forests,
and some of the most fertile soils of the world. All
these have together helped North America becomeone of the most economically developed areas of the
world. Allis inhabitants enjoy a much higher
standard of living than most other parts. The
continent also bats of the highest average income
per person of any continent, and also a higher
average food intake per person. The per capita
consumption of energy is four times as the world
average even though the population of the continent
is less than 10% of the total world population,
Building Blocks of Life
The earth is the only planet that supports life. How
can we help, the Earth sustain this life? Discuss.
While the earth provides us with a variety of natural
resources to help us live comfortably within our
environment, these resources are not finite and
humans will need to develop a better system for
using these resources in order to prevent
unnecessary strain on the environment. We will
need to be replaced by eco-friendly and sustainable
technologies like wind or solar power in order to
keep up with the global demand for energy that is
mostly supplied by fossil fuels.
Individually, we can each develop simple habits to
become more sustainable in our own lives
+ Reconsider your consumption habits. Do you
end up throwing away a lot of garbage? Is
most of your garbage food waste? Ifit is, have
you thought about composting your food
waste? If you are currently throwing away
items that can be recycled, start a recycling
program in your household,
+ Be conscious of the way you purchase foods.
Try buying sustainable foods like locally grown
fruits and vegetables that do not come in
Styrofoam packaging. Or, try buying products
with packaging made from recycled materials.
‘+ When you purchase fruits and vegetables, be
sure to buy them from your local farmer’s
market. Purchasing your produce from local
vendors will help to support your local
‘economy, reduce the number of trucks needed
to transport produce across the country and
may result in a reduction of greenhouse gas
emissions.

whereas the wildlife sanctuaries usually do not have
properly marked boundaries. National parks are big

Landline phones are not used as much today as
they were used a few years ago. What could be the
reason?
Yes, | agree that landlines phones are not used as
much today as they were used a few years ago
because cell phones and Internet calls are generally
cheaper and more convenient. Landlines are
obsolete. People who don't have cell phones
generally can't afford a landline either, so there is
really no market for landlines. Cell phone plans are
easy, inexpensive, and used far more than
traditional home phones. Businesses may continue
to use them, but private citizens really have no use
for landlines.

Do you think that by boycotting British Goods and
adopting Swadeshi goods in country would have
made it self-reliant? Give reasons to support your
answer.
The Swadeshi and boycott movements gave great
emphasis upon ‘Atmasakti’ or self-reliance in
different fields as a means to re-assert national
dignity. This emphasis on self-reliance was most
evident in the field of National Education. The Bengal
National College was founded with Aurobindo as its
Principal. Scores of national schools were established
ina short period all over the country. In August 1906,
the National Council of Education was established.
Self-reliance was also evident in the entrepreneurial
zeal of Indians. The period saw an explosion of
Swadeshi textile mills, soap and match factories,
‘tanneries, banks, insurance companies, shops etc.
While most of these Swadeshi enterprises were
established and run owing to patriotic fervour than
any real business interest and were unable to survive
for long, some others such as Acharya PC. Ray's
Bengal Chemicals Factory, became successful and
famous.
