- BASELINE / DIAGNOSTIC ACTIVITY -
Note for the Teacher:
Use this activity at the start of the Grade 7 year.
This activity is not intended as a test. The questions are based on the Grade 6
Assessment Standards. Learners can work in pairs or in larger groups and respond
individually after a group discussion. Do not record the individual learner's score; rather
identify areas needing attention during your teaching,
Use peer reading to support learners with barriers to reading

The indigenous people of Southern Africa used cattle
for riding and transporting goods. These were also
used by the early European settlers who arrived in
Southern Africa in the 1600s.
Early in the 20" century the settlers introduced steam
and internal combustion engines and these became the new source of power for all
forms of work and transportation.

Question 32
+ The drawing is of a wooden stepladder. It
was found that whenever a worker climbed
the ladder it slipped on the floor and
collapsed flat.
+ What was actually happening was that the
worker climbing the steps created a load
acting downwards which passed through
the rest of the ladder and into the floor. The
floor responded with an equal and opposite
resisting force upwards.
+ Sketch in 2-D, three different solutions to
prevent the stepladder shown from
collapsing flat when in use. Use labels and

Question 33
A. MAKE:
Follow the instructions below and make your own PANTOGRAPH
(A pantograph is an instrument for copying line drawings or pictures to enlarge or reduce them
in the process.)
masking tape
You will need the following: strips of corrugated card, 4 split pins, a pencil with a sharp
point, a screw 12 mm long, a screw 30 mm long, a block of wood about 25 mm thick and
Steps for making:
1. Cut strips of card about 20 mm wide (2 x 550 mm long), (1X 350 mm long) and (1 x 250
mm long). Cut parallel to the corrugation if using corrugated card.
2. Lay them out according to the picture, and mark with a pencil where the various holes
will go. The measurements given indicate the distance between the holes.
3. Use the pencil or any other sharp pointed tool and make holes through the card by
pushing and twisting.
4. Insert the three split pins at (A.)
(Ensure a loose fit to allow for
movement)
5, Insert the screw/ nail at the
point labeled “fixed” and attach
it using the screw / nail to the
block of wood underneath
6. Insert the pencil at the place
indicated for the pencil
7. Insert the 30 mm screw at B, to
be used as the pointer

How to use the pantograph:
1. Take a small drawing or picture that you want to enlarge, and put it under where the
pointer is. When you pick up the pencil and move it around, the pointer will move across
the small picture. Make sure you can cover the whole picture with the pointer. Adjust the
height of the screw so that it just touches the surface.
When youre sure you can cover the whole picture, tape it to the table with masking tape.
Take a piece of paper, and put it under where the pencil is. Pick up the pencil and move
it around, making sure that as your pointer goes from the left edge of the picture to the
right, and from top to bottom, the pencil is still somewhere over the paper. When the
paper is in the right place, tape it down too.
4, Now copy the picture by putting the pencil down on the paper, and draw lines as you
keep your eye on the pointer, to make it follow the lines on the original. You get the most
accurate results if you hold the pencil, or the cardboard strip near it, very lightly, so as
not to twist the pantograph.

MEMORANDUM
GRADE 7:
INTRODUCTION:
‘+ The importance of the baseline / diagnostic
activity is the discussion with learners about
why they responded in the way that they did
to questions they got wrong.
* Discuss each option when giving feedback.
This will develop a broader conceptual
understanding that is required of learners.
Help them to understand why their
responses are wrong,
‘© The focus is about making sure learners
understand the basic knowledge, concepts
and skills used,
NOTE:
* This activity is less about the marks
that the learner may or may not
achieve.
* It must be used to consolidate the
work done in Grade 6, based on the
NCS.
«It must inform the Grade 7 teaching
and learning process.
* Train learners how to respond to
multiple-choice questions. They
must read all the possible
responses before making the best
selection.
* To save paper, print a set of
instructions for a class group and
let learners complete their
responses in their workbook.
* Share your findings with your Grade
6 teachers.
