The name ’Buffalo Bill’ is one of the most famous names in the history of the Wild West. Bill was a famous fighter
and a great hunter. Later in his life, he was a great showman and one of the first people to protect America’s natural
environment.

William Cody was born in Indiana, on 26th February 1846. In those days, life in the American West was very
difficult and dangerous, and people used to fight to protect their homes.

Before he was thirteen, Bill was an expert horse-rider and very good with a pistol. Before he was twenty years old,
Bill left home and worked with the Pony Express company. The Pony Express was the post office of the Wild West.
The Pony Express riders took letters and money to people in different parts of the country. After that, Bill worked
hunting buffaloes. Some people say he hunted more than 4,000 buffaloes. This is where he got his name, ’Buffalo
Bill’.

Buffalo Bill was one of the first men in America to say that all Americans had to work together. Bill started his
famous ’Wild West Show’ and tried to keep the traditions of the Wild West. He helped establish America’s first
National Forest reserve in Wyoming.
