Helen Stoner visited Sherlock Holmes for help regarding the mysterious death of her sister Julia. Julia had died after hearing a strange whistle and screaming about a speckled band. Helen also heard the whistle and was fearful for her life. Holmes discovered that their guardian, Dr. Roylott, was keeping a poisonous swamp adder snake in the room that he used to kill the sisters by dropping it through a vent. Holmes tricked the snake into biting Roylott, killing him.

Helen Stoner visited Sherlock Holmes because her twin sister ,Julia, died mysteriously after
she heard a whistle a few days before she was to be married . Helen heard the same
whistle and came to seek for help.

Dr Roylott went to prison in India because he said one of his servant was a robber and he
killed the servant.

4. Why did the girls always lock the door of their rooms at night?
The girls always locked the door of their room at night because of the tiger and monkey in
their garden.

5. What happened to Julia before she died?


Before Julia died she fell to the ground in terrible pain and shouted in terror, ‘Helen! it was
the band! The speckled band!’

6. Why did Holmes realise that Dr Roylott was a cruel man?


Holmes realised that Dr Roylott was a cruel man because Helen told him Dr Roylott was
often violent . The people in the village were afraid of him and Dr Roylott came to Holmes
House and shouted at him angrily.

When Sherlock Holmes entered the middle room he noticed a long bell cord above the bed
and the bell doesn’t ring. The cord went up to a small ventilator that goes to Dr Roylott’s
room and there was also a metal safe . There was a small plate of milk on top the safe.

3. What did Dr Roylott keep in the safe?


Dr Roylott kept the most poisonous snake in India in the safe which is named “Swamp
adder”.
4. How did Dr Roylott die?
Dr Roylott was bitten by a poisonous snake after Holmes hitted it with a stick.

5. Why was there a small plate of milk in Dr Roylott’s room?


There was a small plate of milk in Dr Roylott’s room as a reward for a snake.
