1. What are the major development programs in S&T in the Philippines?
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in the Philippines offers a
wide range of programs, including the Science Education Institute (SEI) Scholarships
or also known as the Republic Act 7687 Scholarship Program. These awards are given
to students who have excellent capacity when it comes to science and math and are meant
to encourage and promote gifted Filipino students who want to work in the fields of
science and technology. The SEI has numerous scholarship programs to suit different
academic levels and subject areas. Tuition and other academic costs are all frequently
covered by SEI scholarships. In return service agreements, whereby recipients agree to
work in the Philippines for a specific length of time after completing their studies,
recipients are often required to do duty to the Philippines.
In the Philippines, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is
responsible for overseeing the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging
Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD). PCIEERD is essential in advancing
and aiding initiatives for research and development in the fields of business, energy, and
innovative technologies. Its main objective is to improve science and technology to
encourage growth and creativity in these critical areas of the Philippine economy.
Researchers, scientists, and organizations working on initiatives relating to business,
energy, and emerging technologies can apply for grants and financial assistance from
PCIEERD. These campaigns seek to deal with various issues, develop modern
technology, and create new concepts in these fields. Additionally, PCIEERD aids in the
transition of technology from research to commercial uses. Supporting the
commercialization of inventions created by Filipino researchers falls under this particular
group.
2. Choose and post 5 Great Filipino Inventions. Give the background of the scientist
and describe the invention.
Karaoke
Roberto del Rosario created the Karaoke Sing-Along System in 1975. The Sing-
Along System, which Del Rosario later received a trademark for, eventually gave rise
to the karaoke machine. The popularity of karaoke is widespread, particularly in
South-East Asia. Roberto del Rosario, the president of Trebel Music Corporation,
created a brilliant technique in 1974 that showed song lyrics as the instrumental
music played. It is a great way to participate in group or solo singing to your favorite
music.
Bamboo Incubator
The respected Harvard University School of Medicine recognized Dr. Fe del
Mundo as the first person of Asian origin. She created a bamboo incubator in 1941 in
response to the dearth of medical services in our country, hoping to assist families
living in remote areas without electricity. The biographical stories state that the doctor
created a temporary incubator out of two bamboo laundry baskets that were used
locally. Hot water bottles were positioned between and around the two baskets to
offer warmth. By doing this, it is possible to regulate a newborn baby's body
temperature without the usage of electricity.
Solar Window
Carvey Ehren Maigue, a 27-year-old Mapua University BS Electrical Engineering
student, had the amazing idea in 2020 to turn crop wastes, including fruits and
vegetables, into solar windows that would collect UV radiation and turn it into power.
At the James Dyson Award, his creation, the AuREUS, triumphed over 1,800 other
entries from around the globe and won the Global Sustainability Prize.
Erythromycin
Dr. Abelardo B. Aguilar, a researcher with the multinational pharmaceutical company
Eli Lilly and Company, made the initial discovery of this. His superiors were initially
presented with this antibiotic in 1949, and it was later recognized as one that might
aid in treating bacterial diseases.
16-Bit Microchip
Calculator built on a 16-bit microprocessor was created by Diosdado Banatao,
popularly known as Dado Banatao. He created the first 10-Mbit Ethernet CMOS with
silicon coupler data-link control and transreceiver chip. He is an engineer who works
in the high-tech sector. He is credited for developing the first system logic chip set for
IBM's PC-XT and PC-AT in addition to the local bus concept and the first Windows
Graphics accelerator chip for personal computers.
3. List down Filipino Indigenous Practices in connection to science and technology.
What are the impacts of these practices to the Modern Science and Filipino today.
Indigenous people have made significant contributions to science and are
responsible for the creation of numerous inventions. Even though they may not have been
widely recognized as such, indigenous practices in the Philippines have a long history of
embracing knowledge connected to science and technology. These customs continue to
influence contemporary Filipino culture and have long-lasting effects on science and
technology.
Agriculture is heavily impacted by practices of indigenous Filipinos. Intricate
systems of rice terracing are examples of rice techniques that were inherit up until today.
rice terracing has been constructed by indigenous tribes in the Cordillera region to
enhance land usage, soil conservation, and water management. These methods have
influenced the nation's modern engineering and agriculture. Traditional fishing method
have also adapted to our environment today. Indigenous fishing tribes have created a
variety of environmentally friendly fishing techniques, such as fish traps and fish corrals.
Modern fisheries management practices have been influenced by these techniques.
Medicines are also influenced by native Filipinos. The evolution of herbal
medicine has been influenced by indigenous knowledge of the therapeutic capabilities of
many plants and herbs like tsaang gubat, lagundi, and sambong. Traditional healers, also
referred to as "albularyo," still offer healthcare options to contemporary treatment.
The preservation of ancestral ecological information, contributions to sustainable
development, and the promotion of cultural heritage are some of the effects of these
indigenous traditions on contemporary science and Filipino society. These approaches
have been valued by modern science in industries including agriculture, environmental
protection, medicine, and architecture.
