ABSTRACT

Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in

academic achievement and lifelong learning. This study aimed to address the problems

encountered in reading comprehension of the Grade 11 St. Scholastica of Holy Trinity

College of Cam Sur. Over the years, numerous studies have explored various

strategies, techniques, and interventions which aimed to enhance the reading

comprehension abilities of individuals across different age groups and educational

settings. This examined the existing literature on reading comprehension, highlighting

key theoretical frameworks, assessment tools, instructional approaches, and factors

influencing reading comprehension of the students. The study began through

elucidating the cognitive processes involved in reading comprehension, listen to

understand, vocabulary acquisition (Now Word), knowledge activation (the Right Word),

and metacognitive monitoring (Comprehend the Sentence to apply) of the students. It

explored influential models such as the Simple View of Reading and the Construction-

Integration Model, which provide valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms of

comprehension. Assessment tools used to measure reading comprehension are

discussed, ranging from traditional measures like standardized tests to more recent

developments such as the pre assessment and post assessment. The study also

investigated the factors that impact reading comprehension, including individual

differences.

Furthermore, the study examined various instructional approaches that have

shown promise in improving reading comprehension. These approaches encompass

explicit instruction of reading strategies, reciprocal teaching, collaborative learning,

digital interventions, and the use of graphic organizers. The study also addressed the

importance of incorporating metacognitive strategies and self-regulation techniques to

foster independent and strategic reading. Lastly, the review highlights the significance of

promoting reading engagement, fostering a love for reading, and creating supportive

learning environments to cultivate effective reading comprehension skills. It emphasized

the role of teachers, parents, and educational stakeholders in implementing evidence-

based practices that nurture reading comprehension abilities. Overall, this

comprehensive study provides a synthesized overview of the current research on

reading comprehension, offering valuable insights into the theoretical foundations,

assessment tools, instructional strategies, and influential factors. By enhancing the

Grade 11 St. Scholastica of Holy Trinity College of Cam Sur in reading comprehension,

this study aims to contribute to the development of evidence-based practices that foster

proficient and engaged readers across diverse populations.

The performance level of Grade 11 St. Scholastica students during the pre-

evaluation in reading comprehension in terms of: a.) Literal of what they have read is

very low; b.) interpretive of what they have read is very low; c.) Applied of what they

have read is very low. After applying the SAGIP READ-COM intervention, the

performance level of the students in reading comprehension was improved through the

said intervention. This study proves that SAGIP READ-COM was effective.

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Education is the process of hastening learning, knowledge acquisition, value and

virtue acquisition. It aids in the improvement of people all around the world. It is a more

reliable way for people to learn knowledge, skills, and morals. Education unquestionably

determines the quality of a person's life. It also means instilling moral values, positive

thinking, attitude of helping, attitude of giving to society, and ethical values in these

kinds of students. Education enhances information and skills while also fostering the

growth of the personality and attitude. Most significantly, education affects people's

prospects of finding work. A person with a lot of education is usually quite likely to land

a decent career. Until the noble corona virus came.

The Noble Corona Virus Disease (SARS-COVID19) poses a threat to society at

large, not only to education. The extremely dangerous and large COVID-19 virus

causes severe illness and rapid death in its victims. It began in Wuhan, China, in 2018.

While some patients made a full recovery, others did not. Also, the virus spreads to

neighboring countries as well as some internal places, becoming a pandemic. It

ultimately became known as the Global Health Crisis. Face-to-face classes are added

to the online courses to continue the academic year's studies. The pandemic, which

impacted many students, neutralized their academic learning, particularly in their

reading.

DepEd-6 admitted that the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the

literacy development of young students as they even received feedback about some

students who did not know how to read. The Department of Education (DepEd)-6 said

that low basic literacy skills among grade school students is one of the problems that

the department is facing as they transition to full implementation of face-to-face classes

after two years of distance learning because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-

19) pandemic.

Reading has always been a very important associated with a well spring of

wisdom, joy, tenacity, and moral courage. The value of reading has grown in the

modern world since there is so much to learn and a need for a conscious effort to

overcome dividing coercion. Millions of lives have been altered by books. Connecting

the ideas on the page to what you already know is the goal of reading. Pouring text into

your mind without any prior knowledge is equivalent to pouring water into your palm.

The capacity to read, analyze, and comprehend literature is known as reading

comprehension.

Word reading the ability to decode the symbols on the page and language

comprehension are two interrelated skills that are necessary being able to understand

the meaning of the words and sentences. Reading gains meaning when it is

understood. When the words on a page are more than just letters and sounds, reading

comprehension happens. Reading is joyful, entertaining, and educational when it is

understood. to excel in school, the workplace, and life in general.

According to Spratt et al., 2005: 21 in Kurnianto 2016, reading is an activity in

which readers to respond to make sense of a text being read which is connected to their

prior knowledge.

To Atika 2017, Reading comprehension means understanding what has been

read. Comprehension involves understanding the vocabulary seeing the relationship

among words and concepts, organizing idea, recognizing author’s purpose, making

judgment and evaluation.

Even if all the students are able to read, the Grade 11 St. Scholastica of Holy

Trinity College of Camarines Sur INC, s/y 2023 – 2024, out of 36 students who are able

to read, only 15 or 42% Can Comprehend what are they Reading. And 21 or 58%

cannot comprehend what they are reading. That’s why, the researcher wanted to

conduct this study to be able to improve the reading comprehension of the students of

Grade 11 St. Scholastica through the desired interventions.

The researcher believes that reading with understanding is a stepping stone for

greater achievements of all the learners and the foundation for independent learning

undertake.

what they have read and the readers that cannot understand what they have

read in the class based on the PHIL-IRI Group Screening Test will be used.

2.) The result will be interpreted through the computation of mean weighted and

mean percentage in each activity/strategy as stated in the table

v. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS AND REFLECTION

The performance level of grade 11 St. Scholastica students in reading

comprehension have been identified through a pie graph, bar graph and tabular

form of computing the percentage and frequency distribution. On the other hand, to
