QUESTION NO. 2- ASSERTION- REASON QUESTIONS

Direction: In each of the following questions, a statement of Assertion is given followed by a

corresponding statement of Reason. Of the statements, mark the correct answer as

a. Both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

b. Both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

c. Assertion is true but reason is false.

d. Assertion is false but reason is true

2.1) Assertion: Atomicity of ozone is three while that of oxygen is two.

Reason: Atomicity is the number of atoms constituting a molecule.

2.2) Assertion: Molecular weight of oxygen is 16.

Reason: Atomic weight of oxygen is 16.

2.3) Assertion: The valency of aluminium is 3 and oxygen is 2.

Reason: The chemical formula of aluminium oxide is Al3O2.

2.4) Assertion: Ions are always positively charged.

Reason: Ions are formed by losing or gaining of electrons.

QUESTION NO. 3-8 – SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS (2 MARKERS)

3) Give the formula of the compounds formed from the following sets of elements:

12) . Give the compound names represented by the following formulae.

NaNO3, HCl, Mg (OH)2

13) Write the general rules for writing chemical formulae.

QUESTION 14- CASE STUDY QUESTION – 4 MARKER

The knowledge of the valencies of various radicals helps us to write the formulae of chemical
compounds. The total positive charge on positive ions (cations) is equal to the total negative charge
on negative ions (anions) in a molecule. Therefore, in writing the formula of a compound, the
positive and negative ions are adjusted in such a way that the total number of positive charges of
positive ions (cations) becomes equal to the total number of negative charges of negative ions
(anions).

There is another simple method for writing the formulae of ionic compounds. In this method, the
valencies (or positive or negative charges) of the ions can be ‘crossed over’ to give subscripts. The
purpose of crossing over of charges is to find the number of ions required to equalise the number of
positive and negative charges.

i)The formula of the sulphate of an element X is X2(SO4)3. The formula of nitride of element X will be

(a) X2N (b) XN2

(c) XN (d) X2N3

ii) The formula of a compound is X3Y. The valencies of elements X and Y will be respectively

(a) 1 and 3 (b) 3 and 1

(c) 2 and 3 (d) 3 and 2

iii) Using the symbols and valencies, write the chemical formulae of the following compounds-

Sodium bicarbonate

Barium chloride

QUESTION 15- LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS – 5 MARKERS

15) a) Calculate the formula mass of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3.10H2O)

b) Write chemical formulae of all the compounds that can be formed by the combination of following
ions-

K+, Fe3+ , Ca2+, Cl- , SO42-
