MECH 412 Machine Design II Assignment 2

This document outlines an assignment for a machine design course. It includes 11 multi-part questions calculating gear properties like pitch diameter, circular pitch, and center distances. Students must show all work, not copy solutions, and contribute equally to group assignments. Calculations include gear ratios, speeds, torques, and forces for various gear train examples.

MECH 412 - Machine Design II

Sec. 51, Spring 2024

Assignment # 2 (CLO 2)
Due on: Wednesday January 31, 2024
Notes and Instructions:
• This is a group assignment. Students in a group must contribute equally in completing the
assignment problems. Intergroup discussion is allowed but at the end, each group must
complete the assignment independently.
• Copying from the textbook solution manual, from another group’s work or from elsewhere is
strictly forbidden and it will be considered as cheating and will be penalized heavily.
• All details of calculations, including intermediate sketches and well-labelled free-body
diagrams, as needed, together with equations of equilibrium and other necessary equations,
must be clearly presented.

Questions:

1. A gear has 34 teeth of the 20°, full-depth, involute form and module of 3. Compute the following: (a)
Pitch diameter
(b) Circular pitch
(c) Equivalent diametral pitch
(d) Nearest standard diametral pitch
(e) Addendum
(f) Dedendum
(g) Clearance
(h) Whole depth
(i) Working depth
(j) Tooth thickness
(k) Outside diameter
2. A gear has 44 teeth of the 20°, full-depth, involute form and a diametral pitch of 12. Compute the
following:
(a) Pitch diameter
(b) Circular pitch
(c) Equivalent module
(d) Nearest standard module
(e) Addendum
(f) Dedendum
(g) Clearance
(h) Whole depth
(i) Working depth
(j) Tooth thickness
(k) Outside diameter

3. A 21-tooth spur pinion mates with a 28-tooth gear. The diametral pitch is 3 teeth/in and the pressure
angle is 20°. Make a drawing of the gears showing one tooth on each gear. Find and tabulate the
following results: the addendum, dedendum, clearance, circular pitch, tooth thickness, and base-circle
diameters; the lengths of the arc of approach, recess, and action; and the base pitch and contact ratio.
4. A 17-tooth spur pinion has a diametral pitch of 8 teeth/in, runs at 1120 rev/min, and drives a gear at a
speed of 544 rev/min. Find the number of teeth on the gear and the theoretical center-to-center
distance.

5. A 15-tooth spur pinion has a module of 3 mm and runs at a speed of 1600 rev/min. The driven gear
has 60 teeth. Find the speed of the driven gear, the circular pitch, and the theoretical center-to-center
distance.

6. A spur gearset has a module of 6 mm and a velocity ratio of 4. The pinion has 16 teeth. Find the
number of teeth on the driven gear, the pitch diameters, and the theoretical center-to-center distance.
7. To avoid the problem of interference in a pair of spur gears using a 20° pressure angle, specify the
minimum number of teeth allowed on the pinion for each of the following gear ratios.
(a) 2 to 1
(b) 3 to 1
(c) 4 to 1
(d) 5 to 1
8. For a spur gearset with ϕ = 20°, while avoiding interference, find:
(a) The smallest pinion tooth count that will run with itself
(b) The smallest pinion tooth count at a ratio mG = 2.5, and the largest gear tooth count possible
with this pinion
(c) The smallest pinion that will run with a rack
9. Shaft a in the figure has a power input of 75 kW at a speed of 1000 rev/min in the counterclockwise
direction. The gears have a module of 5 mm and a 20° pressure angle. Gear 3 is an idler.
(a) Find the force F3b that gear 3 exerts against shaft b.
(b) Find the torque T4c that gear 4 exerts on shaft c.
10. The gears shown in the figure have a module of 12 mm and a 20° pressure angle. The pinion
rotates at 1800 rev/min clockwise and transmits 150 kW through the idler pair to gear 5 on
shaft c. What forces do gears 3 and 4 transmit to the idler shaft?
11. The figure shows a pair of shaft-mounted spur gears having a diametral pitch of 5 teeth/in
with an 18-tooth 20° pinion driving a 45-tooth gear. The power input is 32-hp at 1800 rev/min.
Find the direction and magnitude of the forces acting on bearings A, B, C, and D.
