General Information
SMCS - 1400
The machine electrical system has separate electrical circuits. Some of the electrical system
components are used in more than one circuit.
For an accurate representation of the machine electrical systems, refer to the electrical system
schematic in the service manual for the machine that is being serviced.

The components of the electrical power supply circuit are the: batteries, main fuse, jump-start receptacle,
main circuit breaker and main power relay.

(3) Batteries
Two 12 V batteries (3) are connected in series to supply 24 V power to the machine electrical system. 24 V
power is supplied to main fuse (2). The fuse protects batteries (3) from circuit overload between main fuse (2)
and the electric starting motor. Jump-start receptacle (1) is available to jump-start the machine. When jump
cables are connected to jump-start receptacle (1) from a 24 V electrical source, the machine may be started.
Jump-start receptacle (1) may also be used as an auxiliary power outlet source to supply 24 V to service
equipment.

When battery disconnect switch (3) is in the ON position, the switch contacts close to connect
batteries (2) to machine ground. 24 V power is supplied to main fuse (1) and then to the machine
circuit breaker panel. When battery disconnect switch (3) is in the OFF position, the switch
contacts open to disconnect the batteries from machine ground. When battery disconnect switch
(3) is in the OFF position, 24 V power is not supplied to any electrical system on the machine.
NOTICE
Never turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position while the
engine is running. Electrical system damage could occur.

With the battery disconnect switch in the ON position, 24 V power is supplied from batteries (2) via
alternator circuit breaker (4) to alternator (3). With the key start switch in the ON position, 24 V power is
supplied to Machine ECM (6) and monitor display (5) .
24 V power is supplied to alternator (3) from batteries (2) via main fuse (1) and alternator circuit breaker (4).
The alternator circuit breaker protects the alternator and the wiring harness from circuit overload.
With the engine running at high idle rpm, the alternator generates a charge of 26 V to 29 V. A voltage signal
is supplied from alternator (3) to Machine ECM (6). Monitor display (5) will not indicate when the voltage
signal is within the normal operating range. When, the voltage is outside the normal operating range a
diagnostic pop-up will be displayed on Monitor display (5) .

The circuit breaker prevents circuit overload. Each circuit breaker has a specified current rating,
depending on the system requirements. If an overload occurs on a system, the circuit breaker
element will separate. power will not be supplied to the system until the circuit breaker has been
reset. If, the circuit breaker element separates again a fault is present in the related electrical
system.

With the key start switch in the OFF position (2), main relay magnetic switch (4) is not energized and the
relay contacts are open. In this condition, 24 V power is present in circuit breaker CB21. 24 V power is
supplied to all other unswitched circuit breakers.
When key start switch (1) is turned to the ON position (3), 24 V power is supplied via idle timer/fire
suppression loop receptacle (5) to main relay magnetic switch (4). Main relay magnetic switch (4) is
energized and the relay contacts are closed. 24 V power is now supplied to all switched circuit breakers.

dome lamp will be on.

contacts will close. When the contacts close, power will be supplied to illuminate dome lamp (2). When the
cab door is closed, the contacts in dome lamp door switch (3) will open and dome lamp (2) will be off.

limit switch (2) .
When, the brake pedal is depressed, stop light limit switch (2) is activated. 24 V power is then supplied to
illuminate stop/tail light (1) .

Parking brake control valve solenoids (6) and (7) are de-energized by moving parking brake control switch
(1) to the ON position. Parking brake control valve solenoids (6) and (7) are de-energized by moving the
engine start switch key to the OFF position.
When parking brake switch (1) is moved to the ON position, 24 V power will be interrupted to:
The pressure oil in the wheel brakes is returned to the hydraulic tank and the parking brake is engaged. In this
condition, parking brake oil pressure sensor (5) sends a signal to Power Train ECM (8). Power Train ECM
(8) sends a signal via the CAN Data Link to instrument cluster (2). Instrument cluster (2) turns on parking
brake alert indicator (3) .
When key start switch is in ON position and parking brake switch (1) is in OFF position, parking brake
switch (1) must be cycled to allow parking brake to dis-engage.
When oil pressure decreases in service braking system, a PWM signal is sent from brake accumulator oil
pressure sensor (9) to Power Train ECM (8). Power Train ECM (8) de-energizes parking brake solenoids (6)
and (7). De-energizing the parking brake solenoids will engage the parking brake.
When the oil pressure decreases in the transmission, a PWM signal is sent from transmission oil pressure
sensor (4) to Power Train ECM (8). Power Train ECM (8) de-energizes the parking brake solenoids. De-
energizing the parking brake solenoids will engage the parking brake.
When parking brake switch (1) is moved to the OFF position, power from Power Train ECM (8) is supplied
to energize the parking brake solenoids. Energizing parking brake solenoids (6) and (7) will allow pressure oil
to flow to the wheel brakes to disengage the parking brake. Parking brake alert indicator (3) will be off.

With the key start switch in the ON position, 24 V power is supplied via circuit breaker CB1 (8) to Power
Train ECM (1) and Engine ECM (2). 24 V power is supplied via circuit breaker CB22 (9) to the Instrument
Cluster.
Transmission output speed sensor (5), primary speed/timing sensor (6), and secondary speed/timing sensor
(7) are magnetic pick-ups. An electrical pulse is generated whenever gear teeth interrupt the magnetic field.
This signal is then sent to the relative ECM.
With the machine moving, transmission output speed sensor (5) generates a signal that is sent to Power Train
ECM (1). The machine ground speed is determined by Power Train ECM (1) and sent to the instrument
cluster via the CAN Data Link. Speedometer (4) will display the ground speed.
While the engine is running, primary speed/timing sensor (6) and secondary speed/timing sensor (7) generate
a signal that is sent to Engine ECM (2). Engine ECM (2) determines the engine rpm. Engine ECM (2) sends a
signal via the CAN Data Link to the instrument cluster via the CAN Data Link. Tachometer (3) will display
the engine speed in rpm.

Circuit breaker CB10 (11) will supply 24 V power to the relay coils in wiper control module (13). With any
loss of 24 V power to the relay coils, the wipers and washers will not work.
When wiper washer switch (1) is turned clockwise to LOW speed (8), 24 V power is supplied via circuit
breaker CB11 (12) to front window wiper motor (6), door window wiper motor (5) and rear window wiper
motor (7) .
When wiper washer switch (1) is turned clockwise to HIGH speed (9), 24 V power is supplied via circuit
breaker CB9 (10) to front window wiper motor (6), door window wiper motor (5) and rear window wiper
motor (7) .
The right side of joystick wiper switch (2) is pressed to turn on the front, side, and rear window wipers and
washers.
Note: The front, door, and rear window wipers will operate at the low speed.
When wiper washer switch (2) is pushed in, 24 V power is supplied via circuit breaker CB10 (11) to front
washer motor (6), door washer motor (5) and rear washer motor (7) .

With the key start switch in the ON position, 24 V power is supplied to Power Train ECM (4), Engine ECM
(5) and Machine ECM (6) .
Power Train ECM (4) monitors outputs from transmission output speed sensor (11). Engine ECM (5)
monitors outputs from primary speed timing sensor (10) and secondary speed timing sensor (9). Machine
ECM (6) monitors outputs from primary steering flow switch (7) and secondary steering flow switch (8) .
Secondary steering flow switch (8) is only monitored when the engine speed is above 1700 rpm and a ground
speed is above 3 km/h (2 mph).
When the engine starts and rpm increases, contacts of primary steering flow switch (7) and secondary flow
switch (8) will close. On instrument cluster (1), primary steering indicator (2) and secondary steering
indicator (3) will be off.
If the primary steering system fails, contacts of primary steering flow switch (7) will open and send a signal
to Machine ECM (6). Machine ECM (6) will send a signal, via the CAN Data Link to instrument cluster (1).
Instrument cluster (1) will illuminate primary steering indicator (2) .
If the secondary steering system fails, contacts of secondary steering flow switch (8) will open and send a
signal to Machine ECM (6). Machine ECM (6) will send a signal, via the CAN Data Link to instrument
cluster (1). Instrument cluster (1) will illuminate secondary steering indicator (3).

With the key start switch in the ON position, 24 V power is supplied from the batteries to Machine ECM (5).
Machine ECM (5) monitors the condition of hydraulic oil level sensor (2) .
Hydraulic oil level sensor (3) is located on the right side of hydraulic oil tank (4). Hydraulic oil level sensor
(3) sends a signal to Machine ECM (5) if the oil level falls below specification. Machine ECM (5) will begin
timing the condition.
When, a low oil condition exists for 30 seconds, Machine ECM (5) will signal monitor display (1). Monitor
display (1) will turn on the hydraulic oil level alert indicator (2). The audible alarm will also be triggered.
Machine ECM (5) will also begin timing the condition if hydraulic oil level sensor (3) returns a condition or
error of:
• short to battery
• short to ground
If one of theses conditions exists for 30 seconds, Machine ECM (5) will signal monitor display (1). Monitor
display (1) will turn on the hydraulic oil level alert indicator (2). The audible alarm will also be triggered.

Power Train ECM (5) receives a ground signal from transmission control (7) indicating the gear and the
direction selected.
When autoshift control switch (1) is moved to MANUAL position (3), a signal is supplied to Power Train
ECM (5). Power Train ECM (5) monitors the signal from upshift switch (6) and downshift switch (8) to
determine the gear that is selected by the operator.
When, autoshift control switch is in AUTOMATIC position (4), a signal is supplied to Power Train ECM (5).
Power Train ECM (5) will then control the upshift and downshift of gears automatically.
The position of autoshift control switch (1) indicates the highest gear which will be selected by Power Train
ECM (5) in automatic mode. Power Train ECM (5) can be programmed to limit this selection.

Monitor display (2) supports an additional service mode for selecting autoshift forward to reverse range
configuration. When selecting first gear, monitor display (2) will send a signal via CAN Data Link to Power

With the key start switch in the ON position, 24 V power is supplied from the batteries via circuit breaker
CB1 to Machine Electronic Control Module (ECM) (11). 24 V unswitched power is supplied via circuit
breaker CB22 to monitor display (1) and instrument cluster (3).
Machine ECM (11) monitors the circuit to axle oil temperature sensors (5) and (6). When the axle oil
temperature increases above the normal system temperature, Machine ECM (11) detects a change in voltage
signal. The voltage signal is an input of Machine ECM (11). A signal will be sent to monitor display (1) and
instrument cluster (3) via CAN data link. Action lamp (4) illuminates on instrument cluster (3) if high axle
temperatures are reported. A pop-up display (2) will appear on the monitor display (1) .
During normal operation of the machine, power is supplied to axle oil pressure switches (7) and (8) and axle
oil filter bypass switches (9) and (10). The axle oil pressure switches and axle oil filter bypass switches will
be closed during normal operation.
When axle oil pressure decreases below normal system pressure, or axle oil filter bypass switches indicate a
blocked oil filter, Machine ECM (11) detects a change in voltage signal. The voltage signal is an input of the
Machine ECM (11). A signal will be sent to monitor display (1) and instrument cluster (3) via CAN data link.
Action lamp (4) illuminates on instrument cluster (3) and a pop-up display (2) will appear on the monitor
display (1).

key start switch in the ON position, 24V power is supplied to the Monitoring System. Engine ECM (1)
supplies power to engine coolant temperature sensor (4) and power to coolant level sensor (5) .
Engine coolant temperature sensor (4) sends a signal to Engine ECM (1). Engine ECM (1) sends a signal via
the CAN Data Link to monitor display (2). The monitoring system sends a signal to instrument cluster (7).

Coolant level sensor (5) sends a signal to the Engine ECM (1). Engine ECM (1) monitors the state of the
coolant. Engine ECM (1) sends the coolant level condition to the monitoring system via the CAN Data Link.
Engine coolant level alert indicator (3) will be displayed on monitor display (2) if the coolant level is not
within specification. If coolant level sensor (5) or engine coolant temperature sensor (4) is out of range for the
engine requirements, Engine ECM (1) will begin timing the condition. Engine ECM (1) monitors the
condition of the engine coolant temperature sensor (4) and the coolant level sensor (5) and will de-rate the
engine or shut the engine down depending on the severity of the conditions.

magnetic switch (9). Power then returns to Power Train ECM (7) to ground. Power Train ECM (7) will
energize the main relay magnetic switch when transmission direction control switch (14) is in the NEUTRAL
position. When start relay magnetic switch (9) is energized, 24 V power is supplied to starting motor solenoid
(12) and to starting motor (11). Electric starting motor (11) will begin to crank.

mode.
Engine ECM (2) monitors engine shutdown switch (1) for a change in status. Engine shutdown switch (1) has
two sets of contacts: normally closed (NC) and normally open (NO). Engine ECM (2) has two inputs:
normally closed (NC) and normally open (NO). When the status of engine shutdown switch (1) changes from

pressure sensor (8), intake manifold pressure sensor (9), atmospheric pressure sensor (10), fuel pressure
sensor (12) and air filter restriction pressure sensor (14). Engine ECM (1) supplies 8 V power to coolant level
sensor (6) .
Coolant level sensor (6) sends a signal to Engine ECM (1) which indicates the fluid level in the radiator
header tank. If the fluid level changes, Engine ECM (1) will record the fault. This fault is then sent to monitor
display (3) via the CAN Data Link. Monitor display (3) will show an event code (5) .

With the engine running, engine oil pressure sensor (8) and engine coolant temperature sensor (7) send
continually changing signals to Engine ECM (1). Engine ECM (1) compares these signals with changing
engine requirements. Engine ECM (1) monitors the signals and engine requirements within a normal range.
The engine coolant temperature will be sent to instrument cluster (2) via the CAN Data Link. The engine
coolant temperature will be displayed on engine coolant temperature gauge (4) on instrument cluster (2) .
Engine ECM (1) monitors air filter restriction pressure sensor (14). If the air filters become plugged, air filter
restriction pressure sensor (14) will send a signal to Engine ECM (1). Engine ECM (1) sends a signal to
monitor display (3) via the CAN Data Link. Monitor display (3) will show an event code (5) .
If the signal from: coolant level sensor (6), engine oil pressure sensor (8), engine coolant temperature sensor
(7) and intake manifold pressure sensor (9), or atmospheric pressure sensor (10) is out of range for the
engines requirements, Engine ECM (1) will begin timing the conditions. Engine ECM (1) monitors the
condition of the sensors and will de-rate the engine or shut the engine down depending on the severity of the
conditions.

When autoshift control switch (7) is in MANUAL position (8), Power Train ECM (1) receives a signal from
transmission direction control switch (13) for the direction that is currently selected. Upshift switch (10) and
downshift switch (12) determine the gears that are currently selected. The signal is sent to Monitoring System
via the CAT Data Link to instrument cluster (2). Instrument cluster (2) will display the actual gear in the
display window. Actual gear indicator (5) consists of two digits. Actual gear indicator (5) displays the gear
currently selected as the left digit and the direction that was selected, as the right digit. The Power Train ECM
will energize transmission solenoids as required.
When autoshift control switch is in AUTOMATIC position (9), Power Train ECM (1) receives a signal from
transmission direction control switch (13) for the direction that is currently selected. Power Train ECM (1)
will change gears within the transmission automatically. The gear that is currently selected in the
AUTOMATIC position, will be displayed on actual gear indicator (5) .

Power Train ECM (1) monitors the circuit to torque converter oil temperature sensor (7).
Torque converter oil temperature sensor (7) sends a signal to Power Train ECM (1). Power Train ECM (1)
sends a signal to instrument cluster (2) and monitor display (3). Torque converter oil temperature (4) is
displayed on instrument cluster (2). Torque converter oil temperature (5) is displayed on monitor display (3) .
When the temperature of torque converter oil increases above a preset level, a signal will be sent via CAN
Data Link to monitor display (3). Torque converter oil temperature warning (6) will appear on monitor
display (3).
