* What’s In: Activity 1.1. Situational Analysis
Directions:
1. Identify what role and function is or not portrayed in given situations.
2. Provide the role and functions for each given situation. Provide explanation.
3. Answer the follow-up critical thinking questions.
Situation 1
Counselor Manabat only sees that students who have financial capacity, deserve to go
to better schools. So he organizes career orientation for students who are in middle
class. He organizes a different career orientation for the others who cannot afford.
Roles and Function: Advocates of students with special needs and students-at-risk.
Situation 2
For Counselor Domingo, the LGBTQ+ community and students who have multicultural
backgrounds are all accepted in a Catholic school. So counselor Domingo provided a
seminar for all the incoming grade 11 and 12 students in the school.
Roles and Function: Advocates of a safe school environment.
Situation 3
The school is having a crisis of academic performance for grades 11 and 12 students.
Their school is having a NAT next month. The principal tapped the services of Guidance
Counselor Morales for the students’ improvement and development. Ms. Morales
requested a meeting of both the parents, teachers and other related parties to discuss
some academic interventions and rehabilitation measures to promote development of
the learners.
Roles and Function: School and community collaboration specialists.
Critical Thinking Questions:
1. Do you think that when counselors are also determining academic success, it goes beyond their
roles and functions? Should it only be within the expected boundaries of counseling? Defend your
answer.
Counselors are also required to provide services beyond crisis intervention, prevention, advocacy, and
evaluation. Awareness must be taken into consideration of the environment in which ounseling services
are being rendered such as the comfort ability of the room which does have a major effect on how the
client may respond to counseling.
2. Is counseling strictly for students who have behavioral problems? Should relationship problems in
school count as an aspect to consider in counseling? Defend your answer.
School counselors are privy to students’ and families’ struggles and personal issues. The nature
of school counseling work requires us to guard closely against crossing boundaries. School counselors,
more than any other group of educators, have a responsibility to ensure minor students’ emotional
safety.
3. Why do you think multiculturalism is a challenge for counselors and educators alike, especially in
achieving academic and career orientation?
Counselors may consider using the following multicultural therapy techniques when working with
culturally diverse clientele. Counselors must know about their client’s attitudes and beliefs about
the counseling process in order to select appropriate interventions.
4. Can you trust a counselor especially when discussing some of your problems in your family? Why?
Why not? Give your explanation.
You can trust the counselor with what you discuss with them because they have protocols to follow
regarding handling their clients. You are rest assured that your private information will not be disclosed
by them.
5. Why do you think counseling should be a professional one, given that even teachers can also
counsel and give advice? Do you think teachers are also good counselors? Defend your answer.
A counselor should be a professional to begin with because counseling is not simply helping the students
or the client to cope up with their problems and such. It involves the counselor’s awareness of the
client’s worldview and possess knowledge and decision-making skills being capable of helping others in
an appropriate way and manner. Teachers play an important role in bridging this gap.
A teacher who can be trusted and shows empathy, can offer support and then guide students to the
school counselor when necessary. However, not all teachers have what it takes to become one.
* What’s New: Activity 1.2. Role-Play
Objective: Execute some of the roles and functions counselors experience in their previous or current
institution. You can be the counselor and perform some of the functions of the counselor.
Career Development Specialists = As a counselor I give assessment tests to clients as a
way to determine several factors, such as
personality types, skills, and work ethic.
Advocates of Students with special needs = As a counselor I ensure they receive every service
and students at risk possible on their road to success directly and indirectly.
I must raise awareness among teachers and
staff so they understand the student’s disabilities and
can better educate them.
Providers of Individual and Group = As a counselor I give help to people to navigate difficult
Counseling life situations, such as the death of a loved one, divorce,
natural disasters, school stress and the loss of a job.
Agents of diversity and multiculturalism = As a counselor I approach counseling through the
context of the client's world. In short, my own
cultural values or bias must not take
precedence that of the client.
* Supplemental Activity: Activity 1.3. A Picture of a Counselor
Objective: Creating an overview of what a counselor does as an agent and partner in change and
development of students through creative collage and data gathering of experience of counselors.

school counselors, or you may look it up on the internet.
2. Express the collected data through the cut-out or drawn photographs and place them within the case.
You may want to follow this format.
Guidance
Counselor
Critical Thinking Questions:
1. What did you discover after gathering your data?
I discovered that counseling is very important, especially because it has many roles. Counselling helps in
improving the relationship between the teacher and children which can be beneficial to develop control
on the child. Every educational institution has its own goals that can be achieved if you have control
over the children. This helps you to maintain discipline and keep your children in check.
2. Which do you think is the most challenging for a counselor? Which do you think is the least?
I think the hardest things about working as a counselor include the often painful process of working
through problems itself. And I think the least is when the client is cooperative in discussing all his/her
problems.
3. As a Filipino, what practices or values can you learn from your guidance counselor? How will you
promote these values and practices?
I think what you can learn from your guidance counselor is respecting human rights and dignity. To
promote this, you must empower the population to assert and claim their human rights.

What I Can Do: Check your Understanding
Direction: What do you want when you grow-up? Below is a reflective essay indicating your plans for
the next year to come. You only have 2 years in the Senior High School, so you must count most of it
especially when you are choosing what matters to you the most. Your career, your life ahead. Write your
name and signature after the essay.
Don’t Give Up
After Senior High School, I am planning to take MedTech as my course in college. Yes, I want to
be a doctor. I suddenly felt the urge of helping sick people. Especially right now that is pandemic, I really
wish I could be a doctor right now so I could help resolve the problem of our country today. During the
past years I had a difficult time because I had lost interest during my last two years. All I wanted then
was to get it over with. I felt so tired and I almost gave up. I stopped pushing myself to persevere. But
looking back to it, I am really grateful that I didn't give up. I've been through a lot and it would be such a
waste if I let my dreams go that easily.
