Young Parents in Open High School

This document discusses a study being conducted by STEM students at New Society National High School about the lived experiences of teenage mothers enrolled in the school's Open High School program. The Open High School program is an alternative secondary education program that uses distance learning to serve students who cannot attend regular classes. The study aims to identify the underlying personal reasons why teenage mothers enroll in the program in order to provide support and alleviate their burdens. It will explore reasons for enrollment and experiences while in the program through interviews with enrolled teenage mothers. The researchers hope this information can help address any mental health issues faced by teenage parents and prevent potential suicide behaviors.

'INTRODUCTION
In the Philippines, education is regarded as a critical component in
development. The decision and determination to pursue higher education is one of
the most important commitments a student will make in his or her life. The demands
of family survival or improving a family's socioeconomic standing, together with the
parents' views toward education, ultimately influence whether or not a child will be
able to continue attending school despite the family's limited financial resources.
Social and cultural variables must be considered, but the most important issue is the
familys expense of continuing to attend school. (Ballestamon, Narvasa, Cabasal,
Gonda, & Prado, 2000).
The Open High School Program (OHSP) is a distant learning-based
alternative to secondary education. It serves students who are unable to attend the
usual class schedule for a variety of reasonable and valid reasons, such as physical
limitations, employment obligations, financial hardships, or a distance between their
home and the school (Ecalnir, 2021). According to Subban, P., et, al. (2022)
Teenage parents are a vulnerable population who are at risk of becoming socially,
economically, and culturally marginalized. However, young parent support groups,
such as programs similar to Open High School Program that is studied at
Melbourne, Australia, serve as lifelines for student participants. These initiatives
reintroduce young parents to education after a break due to pregnancy, increasing
their chances of a life free of socioeconomic disadvantage.

Currently, the researchers, as Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM) students at New Society National High School, are attempting
to address the personal issues of young parents enrolled in open high school. If not
addressed, it could become a severe mental health issue for a young parent,
potentially leading to suicide behavior. In this light, this study was done to identify
the underlying human issues that motivate young parents to enroll in open high
school.

Thus, this study tries to uncover personal reasons and provide aid for young
parents, which will result in alleviating their other burdens.
