Lab – 1: Single Phase Half Wave Uncontrolled
Rectifier with R and RL load
OBJECTIVE:
Students will be given some instructions on trainer safety, efficiency and heating.
To become familiar with the functionality of diodes in circuits.
Afterwards, a lab experiment will be conducted in order to calculate, compare, draw, and
measure the DC output voltages of half-wave appearing as a result of rectification.

REVIEW OF THEORY:
Rectification is a process of conversion of AC to DC. In half-wave rectifier, only one
diode is used. During positive half Cycle the diode is forward biased and it conducts current
through the load resistor R. During negative half cycle diode is reverse biased. Hence, no current

flow through the circuit. Only positive half cycle appears across the load, whereas, the negative
half cycle is suppressed. The half-wave voltage signal normally established by a network with a
single diode, has an average or equivalent DC voltage level equal to 31.8% of the peak voltage
Vm. That is
Average value of output voltage = Vdc = 0.318 .Vm
RMS value of output voltage = Vrms= Vm/2
Average value of output current = Idc = Vdc/R
RMS value of output current = Irms = Vrms/R
Output DC power Pdc = Vdc×Idc
Output AC power Prms = Vrms×Irms
Efficiency:
It is the measure of effectiveness of a rectifier circuit, i.e. 𝜼 =Pdc/ Pac
Form Factor:
It is the measure of shape of output voltage, i.e. F.F=Vrms/Vdc
Ripple Factor:
It is the measure of ripple
content, i.e. R.F=Vac/Vdc
Now in the above circuit just
change the series resistive
branch with RL branch and then
give the any desired and
reasonable values to the
components and then simulate
the circuit and view the Figure 1 – 1: Half-Wave Uncontrolled Rectifier Circuit with R-Load
waveforms.

CONNECTING RESISTIVE LOAD ON TRAINER:
Perform the steps mentioned below for a RL-connected load (record all the readings in table
provided under ‘Exercises’)
Test the diode using diode tester in multimeter.
Measure the voltage of transformer with voltmeter
Arrange the circuit of half wave rectifier on bread-board
Test the continuity of all connections.
Observe the output using Oscilloscope & note down Vpeak-peak, Frequency, rms value
& average value.
Now observe the output across resistor using oscilloscope & note down same values as
mentioned in above step
