Vocabulary 1
 Acting Space – the stage area used for performance.
 Wings – the side area of the stage, not seen by the
audience, which is used for entrances and exits.
 Flies – The area directly above the acting space and wings
used to store scenery when not in use.
 Backstage – all areas not in used for acting. This
encompasses the wings, flies, green room, dressing rooms
and scene shop.
 Green Room – a waiting room just off the wings where the
actors wait while not on stage.
 Scene shop – the area used to construct the various set
pieces.
 Apron – an extension at the front on the stage used for
added acting space. Sometimes encompassing the
orchestra pit.
 Fly rail – a system of pulleys and counter weights used to
lower and raise the scenery stored in the “flies”.
 Proscenium arch – the frame of the stage.
 House – the area where the audience is located usually
includes the box office and lobby.
 Box Office – located at the front of the “house” the place
where the tickets are purchased.
 Down Stage – the area at the front of the acting space;
including the apron.
 Up stage – the area at the back of the acting space.
 Center stage – the area in the center of the acting space.
 Stage left – the area to the left of the actor.
 Stage right – the area to the right of the actor.
 Wagons – scenery on rolling carts.
 Flats – canvas stretched over wood; with painted scenery on
it.
 Backdrops – a large sheet of canvas painted with scenery
and lowered from the flies.
 Main – the main curtain, which covers the stage.
 Legs – black curtains or flats used to conceal the wing area;
used to create entrances and exits.
