ABSTRACT
The report provide a look at the key areas I was involved in and the various activities I
participated in during the period of my attachment at Adamawa Television Corporation
(ATV Yola). However, I gave the volume of activities stated for detailed description of the
numerous activities done during the attachment. The report is split into five chapters, the first
and second chapter presented the background information about the SIWES and the
organization I was attached while the third and fourth dealt with soundly activities done and
the experienced acquired during the programme. The last chapter ends with the summary,
conclusion and recommendation.

CHAPTER ONE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The student industrial work scheme (SIWES) was founded on 1973 by the
federal government of Nigeria through the industrial trust fund (ITF) the program was
designed and purposely to build the theoretical and practice knowledge acquired by the
student of different institution of the higher learning, specifically for the universities,
polytechnics, and colleges that is related to their field of study.
Before the establishment of the scheme, there has been a concern and arising
matter over graduate of the higher institution of learning lacking adequate practice,
experience and knowledge over the field of studies in the school, having the theoretical
education not responsive to the need of the labor market and the employer of the whole.
With that the federal government put in place the student industrial work experience
scheme popularly known as the SIWES curb, the menace of the production graduate in all
levels with just a theoretical knowledge.
It is also design to provide on the practical job for the students undergoing all the
courses that require experience in the industrial activities as well as to bridge the building
of the graduates.
Furthermore, the federal government, of Nigeria make a compulsory for all the
government agencies, ministries, and industrial attachment to all student in accordance
with the provision of decree No. 47 of 1971 amended.
1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF SIWES
i. Opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in the real work as a
student.
ii. To access the interest of the student in the suitability for the occupation
that the make a choice of.
iii. It expose student to work and have a method not normally taught in the course
of theoretical teaching in the school environment and class room.
iv. To make the transition from school to the world of work easier and
supplement students contact for the job settlement/occupation.
v. To conscript the strength the employee involvement in the institutional
activities and entire educational process of preparing the student for meaningful and
productive into activities and work.

1.3 BRIEF HISTORY OF ADAMAWA TELEVISION CORPORATION (ATV
YOLA)
Adamawa Television Corporation Yola is a news and information television
founded at the year 2000, located at Bajabure satellite town, at the heart of
Adamawa state capital (Yola). Adamawa Television Corporation transmission c
channel is 26 UHF.
1.4 OWNERSHIP AND CONTROL OF THE STATION
Adamawa Television Corporation Yola is a news and infotainment television
station owned by Adamawa state government north eastern Nigeria.

CHAPTER TWO
2.1 ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE OF THE STATION
A Broadcast station television/radio station comprises the marketing, production, technical
and accounts/administration departments. The four departments are headed by the
respective managers who report to the general manager or popularly referred to the station
manager.
1. General/station manager: the station manager is responsible for maintaining the budget
of the station along. She/he also recruits and conduct training programmes for the
employs. The progress, growth and performance of the employs is also reviewed by the
general manager.
2. Program director: the program is assigned the duty of creating and planning the daily
broadcast schedule which means that she/he is responsible for locating and providing the
new, news etc. which must be covered in order to disseminate the content properly. For
each individual broadcast, there is a program director who works with the same team
every day and has to report to the operations manager.
3. Chief engineer: the responsibility of the chief engineer is to manage a team which
handles all technical duties. The chief engineer, who reports to the operations manager,
must also inspect the equipment at the radio station, check for any damage which requires
repair, facilitate repair or even purchase new equipment as and when required.
The team under the chief engineer is also responsible for smooth broadcast of programme
and is many times involved in the process of editing tracks, handling sound effects and
checking the strength, quality and clarity of signal.
4. Marketing/commercial: generating revenue is extremely important for any radio
stations for survival. The marketing or sales department has to the responsibility to
generate direct revenue by selling air time to the advertisers.
5. Accounts/finance: the revenue and expenses of the radio station are handled by the
accounts or the finance department. The department is responsible for collecting dues
from the advertisers on time and also ensures that all payments like salaries of the
employees, bills of utility items are made in due time. The department also looks e all
legal or financial issues related to mobilizing funds from the market. The department is
also responsible for handling two other departments namely, auditing and taxation.

6. Administration: the administration department has to manage all the processes of the
radio station. The key roles and responsibilities of the department is to handle logistics,
housekeeping, security concerns at the station. The department is also responsible for
handling the office boys, deployment of security guards, transportation, travel
arrangements for officials and guests. Etc.
2.2 RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS OF THE
STATION
The sales department led by a sales manager is responsible for the sale of all commercial
time to local, regional, and national sales advertisers. Larger stations may have a sales
manager for local advertisers and a national sales manager of spot advertising accounts.
The sales department usually includes a promotions directors and research manager.
The operations department or traffic department led by an operations manager is
responsible for placing the advertising on the air in compliance with the contracts executed
with advertisers. This can be a complicated and difficult task in that there may be dozens of
different contracts each requiring scheduled air time, position and length.
Therefore many stations have automated their traffic functions to varying degrees using
computer applications and systems.
The engineering department led by the chief engineer is responsible for keeping the station
on air with the best signal possible. The improvement of electronic equipment, competition
from other businesses for engineering talent, and relaxed federal regulations has led to
smaller or streamlined engineering departments at most stations. Some stations also
employ a part-time consulting engineer to keep the station operating optimally.
The programming department led by the program director is responsible for the audio
sound and format of the station including news, music and public affairs coverage. Stations
with a music format may have a music director to coordinate the development and
implementation of the stations music format.

CHAPTER THREE
3.1 WORKING EXPERIENCE
During my student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) which I have
undergone through, I have learned some things that are not taught to me in the
classroom. In summary were explained during the industrial training (IT) among other.
i. I learned how to set up studio for programs.
ii. I was taught on editing and process of editing, reasons of editing and equipment
found in editing room and some software of audio editing such as: adobe Audi
noon, cool edit, free audio editor and sonar etc.
iii. I was taught on script writing and classification of programme as well as storage
devices which include: sound card, hard drive DVD plate and flash.
iv. I was taught on graphic, types of graphic (conventional and television graphic).
And also types of color such as: primary, secondary and tertiary color.
v. I was taught on Animation, types of animation which include CEL
animation and computer animation. I also learn about caption.
vi. I was taught on Program line-up. Lineup is a process whereby the program from
each and every day will be arrange in within and in the network.
vii. I was taught on importance of Library, types of library such as: school library, public
state library, personal/private library and special library.
viii. I was taught on studio, types of studio (live and recorded), equipment in the studio
include: camera, light, teleprompter, and monitor, talk back (air phone) turning table,
audio console, video console, acoustic, computer, etc.
ix. I was taught on camera, types of camera (analog and digital), and characteristic of
camera man such as: time keeper, correct and active, hard work person and be
smart. And also camera movement zoom in and zoom out.
x. I learned how to write news story and how to come up with the lead and also how to
write a report.
xi. I learned different types of report such as: package story (pkg), voice over story
(vo), dry story (o), voice insert (vi), voiceless story (vl), voxpop etc. and also of a
good report which are: ideas, focus, determination, solution.
xii. I was educate on how to control audio console during news presentation and
other live current affairs programmes. And also I was thought how to write a

news story using 5 W’s and H.
xiii. I was also taught on how to write news, how to compile a report, how to cast news
and also how to report a news.
xiv. I learned how to sign in and sign out during news presentation and other
productions.
xv. I was taught on how to handle camera during live broadcast as well as operating
a camera in both normal and emergency occasion.
xvi. I learned how to edit an audio sound both for news, advert jingle and, normal
productions.
3.2 SOME ACTIVITIES I TOOK PART IN
i. I took part in different event coverage.
ii. I was assigned to cover the visitation excursion of IQRA ACADEMY YOLA
and came up with the report on their courtesy visit to the ATV YOLA.
iii. I participate in different occasions such as:
a. Audio editing
b. Voice over
c. News presentation
d. Report presentation
e. Camera man etc.
3.2 THE CHALLENGES I HAVE EXPERIENCED DURING MY INDUSTRIAL
TRAINING
1. Insufficient practical experience
2. Lack of supervision
3. Lack of engagement
4. Transportation expenses
5. Combining academic curriculum and industry requirements
6. Unequal opportunities and discrimination
7. Limited networking opportunities
8. Inadequate evaluation and feedback.
Time constraints: One of the most significant challenges student face during SIWES is
the limited duration of the program. Lasting for a few months {typically three to six month
and a maximum of one year}, this short period often hinders student from gaining in-depth
insights into their chosen fields. In many cases, they barely scratch the surface of their

intended profession.
Insufficient Program Experience: Another issue is the lack of hands-on experience.
Students may find themselves doing menial tasks that don’t align with their academic
pursuits, leading to frustration and disappointment.
Weather: is one of the challenge that I have encountered during my industrial training
in Yola. The Yola area is extremely hot area in the state (Adamawa) that why my
body is unfriendly with the weather.
Transportation: is also a big challenge I encountered during the attachment period due to far
from the organization of my industrial training.
Assumptions some of the equipment used in the studio are believed by the students like
religion without seeing the real thing.
For instance, the teleprompter was just defined to us by our outers as “a displacing device
that guide a reporter or newscaster” but in a real since I personally have never seen a
teleprompter with my naked eyes, but I believe it the way it was defined.
The challenges above now have encouraged me to force myself to learn some of the things
been assumed through extra-ordinary research about the things that are not clear to my
understanding.

CHAPTER FOUR
4.1 COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THEORY AND PRACTICE.
Theories are our best representations of the world around us. “Mass communication
theories are explanations and predictions of social phenomena that attempt to relate mass
communication to various aspects of our personal and cultural lives or social systems”
while practical aspect is the act of a person or group of people relaying a message through a
channel of communication to the general public or a segment of the general public.
Television, radio, social media, and print media are common channels of communication.
The comparative analysis between the theory and practical can be clearly be done by
comparing both the practical and the theoretical aspect as can be below:-
In theory one can only be taught based on assumption while the practice doing
and applying the theories into real aspect.
Theory is just the mere shadows of reality into real aspect.
Theory tells people what can be, while action of theory speak through practice
My personal view about the differences between classroom and practice.
Having undergone through the industrial attachment, I want to air out my personal view
about the differences between classroom and practice as follows:-
i. Classroom is the avenue of theory while practice is where the theory being
taught in the classroom manifest.
ii. Classroom is a place of assumption while practice is a place of action
(practical).
iii. Only few of things are being taught in the classroom while many are
achieved in practice.
iv. One can only see the picture of things in his/her mind in the classroom while in the
practical grounds all things are taught physically visible and be touched.

CHAPTER FIVE
5.1 SUMMARY
My Sixteen weeks of industrial training at Adamawa Television Corporation (ATV Yola).
Was a great success and opportunity to learn knowledge and skills? During my preparation.
I was able to appreciate even more my chosen course of study, because I had the opportunity
to combine the theoretical knowledge acquired from school with the practical application of
the knowledge acquired here to carry out very important tasks that contributed in a way to
my success in the business.
5.2 CONCLUSION
I want to commend to the federal government of Nigeria for creating the SIWES program
and its supervisory body, ITF have greatly and wonderfully serve as a boost towards uplift
mind of educational standard in Nigeria, also I have to comment to the staff of Adamawa
Television Corporation Yola and all the studio artists for giving us the best and necessary
assistance needed during the period of my four (4) month of my industrial training (IT).
This cooperative machinery between industrial and institutions of higher learning will
produce effective results under the supervision and control of the industrial training fund (IT
5.3 RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the government should offer sufficient financial and human
resources to all levels and aspect of education to boost effective running of educational
programs specially SIWES.
Government should be encouraged for additional technological development centers to
translate innovation from staff and student to goods and services. This will enable them
fulfill their basic social roles.
I recommend that the program of SIWES should not be put to end (stop) hence,
through this program many are achieved by the student of the various disciplines of
whom I am among.
Staff and supervisor should try their best in attending to the SIWES student to enhance
more practical aspect of the studies to the student of various discipline.
That the establishment should support the SIWES student financially or
otherwise to motivate them.
