Amazon Parrots
Amazon parrots are bright, colorful birds native to South and
Central America. These popular pets are highly intelligent and very
talkative. They love to mimic their owners’ voices and other sounds in
their environment. They also enjoy being handled and are very loving—often
becoming very attached to their owners. Amazons love to climb, play with
toys, and even show off cute tricks like tossing a ring or using roller skates.

Amazons can be costly, both to purchase and to care for. With an average
length of 10–18 inches (25–45 cm), they are large birds and each requires a
cage 39–59 inches (100–150 cm) high, with a floor space of at least 23 x 39
inches (60 x 100 cm). To ensure proper nutrition, an Amazon’s diet should
include a mix of parrot food pellets and seeds as well as fresh fruits and
vegetables. Food and water dishes must be cleaned daily and cages weekly.
Weekly baths are also necessary to keep feathers in good shape.

Amazons are very social birds. They need a lot of attention and will become
lonely and unhappy if left alone for long periods. They are
often friendly with older children who know how to
interact properly with them but need to be watched
carefully around younger children. Although Amazons
can develop close friendships with some other pets, they
can be a danger to smaller animals such as hamsters,
mice, or small birds. Amazons have powerful beaks
and enjoy chewing—if allowed outside of their
cages, care should be taken to protect furniture and other
belongings from damage. While Amazons are generally calm, they
can be noisy in the early morning and at sunset.
