Let Us Learn!

Cheerdance is one of the most recorded popular and self-engaging

dance genres. Indeed, it has been comparatively new in the areas of sports
and dance because it has only emerged in the early 1990s as part of the events
in cheerleading. It was one of the components in International Cheerleading
Competition that gave emphasis on basic elements of cheerleading and dance
techniques.

This lesson will help you understand the nature and essential skills of
cheerdance and its importance in these trying times. More specifically, it aims
to attain the following learning competencies:

1. Self-assesses health-related fitness (HRF) status, barriers to

physical activity assessment participation, and one’s diet
(PEH12FH-Ig-i-6);
2. Engages in moderate to vigorous physical activities (MVPAs) for at
least 60 minutes most days of the week in a variety of settings in-
and out-of school (PEH12FH-Ia-t-8).

The following learning objectives will help us actualize the learning

competencies mentioned above:
1. describe briefly the nature of cheer dance;
2. execute the essential skills of cheer dance; and
3. display active involvement in the module to realize the importance
of cheerdance amidst global pandemic.

Let’s get started. I am confident that you can do this with love and
happiness! You are expected to give your best as you accomplish the task
given in this module. Take care and God bless!

Let Us Study

The foundation of cheer dance takes back its nature from cheerleading.
You cannot appreciate cheer dance if you’ll not comprehend first the
fundamental components of cheerleading.
Cheerleading is an activity that comprises of yells and structured
routines for competition and sports team motivation and entertainment.
Cheers, jumps, dance, gymnastics, stunts and the like are primordial parts of
the routines. Its importance is to give extra motivation and energy to
spectators to yell and support for sports teams and games. Cheerers,
dancers, and athletes involved in cheerleading are called cheerleaders while
squad is the name if they are grouped together as one.
Cheer Dance on the other hand is coined from the words, Cheer and
Dance. To CHEER is to shout out words or phrases that may boost the
morale and confidence of a playing team and perform better during a game.
DANCE, on the other side of the coin, is a physical activity where one
expresses feelings and gestures while executing bodily-kinesthetic movements
usually in rhythm and time.
On this particular part, we’ll discuss the elements of cheer dance. It
consists of dance styles, basic elements of cheer, and basic gymnastics skills.

1. Dance styles – this refers to the utilization of several dance

techniques such as contemporary dance, jazz, modern dance,
contemporary ballet, ethnic or folk dance. The focal points are the
precision, accuracy, sharpness, and synchronicity of the
movements.
2. Elements of cheers – yells and cheers are sets or traditional form
of shout and organized words and movements used by spectators to
encourage or show enthusiasm for an athletic team. Its purpose is
to add extra energy and motivation so that the crowd will give its
unified response.

3. Basic gymnastic skills – the incorporation of simple gymnastics
skills in the field of cheer dance is important to increase the
excitement and add complexity to the choreography and routines.
The execution of skills must be coordinated with the yell and cheer.

A. Jumps – performed within a cheerleading routine either for

performance factor, or within competitive cheerleading to meet
routine requirements and score well. It entails flexibility,
strength, and stamina to demonstrate. Every jump has four
classifications, namely:
 Approach – first phase of a jump
 Lift – takes place after the cheerer/cheer dancer leaves the
ground
 Execution – target the maximum height of the jump with
precision
 Landing – entails whipping of the legs and feet together.
The knees must be bent slightly when you touch the
ground to obtain balance.

the use of apparatus. It may be demonstrated simultaneously by
chosen cheer leaders or the whole squad to add more light and
complexity in the routines.

13
Health Related Fitness Benefits of Cheer Dance

 Cardiovascular endurance – the repetition of trainings and practices

of the routines harness cardiovascular efficiency most particularly if the
choreographed routines will be done repeatedly for three to four
minutes.
 Strength training – this particular component will be honed through
the execution of different dance and gymnastic movements such as the
precision of arm and hand movements and several jumps and stunts.
Indeed, it sharpens muscles in the core, shoulder, and lower
extremities.
 Coordination – this pertains to the capacity to use different parts of
the body together with efficiency and smoothness. It is something that
a cheerleader and whole squad must possess to hit his/her/their
motion on the proper count.
 Flexibility – this entails the incorporation of proper stretching and
conditioning exercises at the beginning to help prevent muscle strains,
sprains, dislocations, and other injuries. Flexibility has something to
do with executing high kicks, jumps, splits, and stunt sequences.
