Dietary Guidelines:
1. Consume milk at least 500ml per day (including tea, curd, buttermilk, paneer) preferably toned.
2. Soups can be taken in late evening also around 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm.
3. Use whole grains like whole wheat, bajra, jowar, brown rice, barley, oats and quinoa rather than
refined cereals like Maida.
4. Restrict rice to 1 meal a day (only at lunch), avoid eating out frequently.
5. Prefer taking fruits over juices. Include apple, guava, orange, pear, sweet lime, watermelon, ripe
papaya, muskmelon, pomegranate, amla, jamun, kiwi, gooseberry, black berry, star fruit (any 2
fruit/day).
6. Select snacks that are roasted like roasted Chana, puffed rice (prepared at home).
7. Legumes and pulses: are good sources of protein, Include all type of dals, like split dal, sprouts,
beans, lobia etc.
8. Include Iron rich food like green leafy vegetables like spinach, seeds like pumpkin seeds,
sesame seeds, flax seeds, Fish like salmon, sardines, dried fruits like raisins prunes etc.,
vegetables like broccoli, string beans, beetroot etc., fruits like pomegranate along with vitamin
C rich food like lemon, sweet lime, orange, kiwi etc.( avoid taking calcium rich food and caffeine
with Iron rich food)
9. Vegetables and fruits: Include a good amount of fiber in the form of different vegetables and
fruits, all other vegetables are allowed which is not mentioned in the avoid list. Include a good
amount of green leafy vegetables in the diet in the form of soup, salad, mixed vegetable raita,
cooked vegetables along with vitamin C rich food like lemon, sweet lime, orange etc.
10. Meat & products : Include egg, chicken, and low mercury fishes like salmon, sardines and
anchovies or freshwater fishes etc. only in grilled, boiled, and in curry form.
11. Nuts and seeds: Include different types of nuts in diet like walnut, almonds, dates, peanut,
pistachio and seeds like flax seed, chia seed, sesame seed, pumpkin seed as they are good
sources of omega 3 fatty acids. Include flaxseed in any form as it helps in controlling blood
sugars.
12. Fats: Ghee can be used in limited quantity 1-2 tsp/day. Oil can be used 2 tsp/day.
13. A gap of 2 hrs. after dinner is required, avoiding going to bed immediately.
14. Take small and frequent meals throughout the day.
15. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water.
16. Advice to take an Iron tablet with citrus fruit or juices for better absorption of iron.
17. Chew food properly.
18. Slow walk after every meal.
Avoid:
1. Vegetables: Potato, yam, tapioca, sweet pumpkin, sweet potato, colocasia, radish,
turnip, knol knol, etc. (vegetables grown underground) (carrot and beetroot can be used
in very less quantity.)
2. Fruits: Big Banana, mango, jackfruit, seethaphal (custard apple), grapes, sapota, lychee
etc. All juices.
3. Milk: cheese, butter, condensed milk, khoa and cream.
4. Fat: Too much butter, ghee, margarine, coconut oil, Vanaspati and dalda.
5. Miscellaneous: sugar, sweets, jaggery, honey, chocolates. All aerated drinks like colas
etc., coconut and cashews, white sugar, brown sugar, dates syrup, ice-creams, etc.
6. Bakery foods: White bread, buns, puffs, cakes, cookies, biscuits etc.
7. Instant food: Bournvita, Horlicks, ready to make soups, sauces and pickles.
8. Fried foods: papads, chips, French fries, mixtures, Vada, bonda, all deep fried snacks
and deep fried meat etc.
9. Limit caffeine and caffeine containing products like coffee, chocolate, sodas.
10. Extra salt on the table (top salt), daily consumption of pickles, papads, ready to eat
foods, processed foods, salted nuts, salted fish and chutney powders which contain salt
as a major preserving agent.
11. Avoid certain fishes like shark, swordfish, tuna, tilefish, king mackerel etc. as they have
high levels of mercury.
12. Avoid undercooked and raw eggs or food made out of them.
13. Alcohol is strictly prohibited from diet as it can affect baby overall development.
Guidelines for preventing Hypoglycemia:
● Eat a well-balanced diet
● Eat small and frequent meals.
● Keep snacks handy
Food Substitute:
● 1 chapatti (25gm flour) =½ cup of cooked rice/upma/avalakki/Pongal/2pcs dhokla/1idli/3
Marie biscuits/1 ½ slice of bread
● 1cup cooked dal = 5tsp roasted Chana(25gm)
