EXPECTATIONS

This module is about the role of hormones involved in female and

male reproductive system.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Label the major endocrine glands of the body
2. Explain the effect of hormone secretion in the development of
organism
3. Appreciate the important role of hormones in maintaining
homeostasis

PRETEST

Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on
a separate sheet of paper.
1. Which of the following is a special structure capable of secreting
chemical substance directly to the bloodstream?

a. gallbladder c. liver
b. gland d. stomach

2. Which condition is caused by lack of iodine?

a. Dwarfism c. goiter
b. gigantism d. tumor

3. Calcium is necessary for stronger bones. Too much amount of calcium

in the blood is regulated by what hormone from thyroid?
a. Adrenaline c. Parathormone
b. Calcitonin d. thyroxin
4. Our bones become strong and longer because of growth hormones.
What gland secretes this hormone?
a. Adrenal c. Pituitary
b. Parathyroid d. Thyroid

5. Which of the following does NOT belong to the group?

a. Calcitonin c. Thyroxin
b. Insulin d. Estrogen
RECAP

The moment you put food in your mouth, the digestive process starts.
After few meters of journey along the digestive tract, finally the digested food
is absorbed in the small intestine and entered the bloodstream.
The circulatory system working together with your respiratory system
delivers food, oxygen to every cell and pick up the cell’s waste and carbon
dioxide. To refresh our mind let’s try to take a look on these pictures , can
you give their functions or roles in making and keeping our body healthy?

Fig, 1 Kidney and pancreas

Don’t you know that aside from excretory works of kidney and
digestive processes done by pancreas they perform other functions in
regulating and maintaining balance inside the body?

LESSON

Look closely on the picture below, what have you noticed? Yes it
shows the stages of human development from being an infant to adult. This
pictures depicts changes in male’s body as you undergo every stage of
development. Same thing happens also to the body of female.

What is endocrine system and how does it works?
The endocrine system is a network of glands that produce and release
hormones that help control many important body functions, especially the
body's ability to change calories into energy that powers cells and organs.
The endocrine system influences how your heart beats, how your bones and
tissues grow, even your ability to make a baby. It plays a vital role in
whether or not you develop diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders,
sexual dysfunction, and a host of other hormone-related disorders.
Endocrine glands secretes hormones into the bloodstream and upon
reaching the target organ, this hormone produces a notable effect. Table 1
shows the list of endocrine glands, hormones and effects.
Table 1. Summary of the Endocrine Glands and Their Hormones

Regulation of the Endocrine System
The endocrine system controls itself by turning off its own production
depending upon the level of hormones present in the blood. This mechanism
is called negative feedback.
For more elaboration, take a look at Fig. no. 3

What are some disorders of the endocrine system?

Sometimes the endocrine system can not function well leading to the
following disorders:
• Goiter – hyposecretion of thyroxin; insufficient iodine

• Cretinism- Results from thyroid hormone insufficiency in infancy

• Diabetes mellitus -A disorder of carbohydrate, fat, and protein

metabolism resulting from insufficient insulin production by the
pancreas
• Dwarfism – results from hyposecretion (low) of growth hormones
• Gigantism- excessive growth of bones caused by hypersecretion of
growth hormone
ACTIVITIES

Explore and strengthen your understanding of the topic by answering these

activities

Activity 1- Endocrine Glands and their Hormones

Direction. Label the endocrine glands and write the hormones they secreted. Use
the following shapes as your guide.

Name of gland Hormone

secre

Guide Questions:

1. Are there any glands which perform dual role as both an endocrine
and exocrine gland?
2. In what aspect do males and females differ?

Activity 2 – Endocrine System: How does it Work?

Materials: colored pencils, ruler and paper, list of endocrine glands and
hormones
Procedure:
1. Copy all the endocrine glands, hormones and target organs on a paper.
Leave enough spaces between each item.
Hypothalamus

Releasing Hormone Inhibiting hormone

Pituitary

TSH ACTH LH FSH GH

Thyroid Adrenal cortex testes ovary all cells

Thyroxine Aldosterone testosterone estrogen

Body cells kidney mammary glands uterus

2. Using a colored pencil draw a black box around each endocrine gland.
3. Draw a black circle around each hormone
4. Draw a black diamond around each target organ and cell
5. Draw a green arrow from gland to the secreted hormone/s
6. Draw a blue arrow from hormone to target organ/cell
7. Draw a red arrow from target glands to hypothalamus. (Process of
negative feedback)
8. Draw an orange arrow from hormones to the hypothalamus.

Question: How does your drawing show about the interactive process of the
endocrine system?
adapted from work of Olivares, Bermio and Cruz

Case Study no. 1

A 35 year old woman complains of muscle weakness, anxiety and depression.

Questions:
1. Which disorder account for the symptoms?
2. What other symptoms you might ask to distinguish this order?

Case Study no. 2

A 33 year old man complains of fatigue. He lost weight although he is not
trying to. A routine blood test shows glucose level is normal but sodium
level is low.
Questions:
1. Which disorder could he possibly have?
2. What test would you suggest to confirm this diagnosis?
3. After answering these two case studies, what are the lessons and
maybe skills you learned from this activity

Fig. no. 4 Summary of influence of hormones in human

In this chart we can see how hormones of the body influence the
response of the body to keep and maintain itself. The stimulus or change in
the body activates a specific gland to secretes a specific hormones to
target organ, and tissue until homeostasis or normal condition is reached.
Hyposecretion and hypersecretion of the hormones may lead to
endocrine disorders.

VALUING

Life exists through maintenance of a complex dynamic equilibrium, or

homeostasis, that is constantly challenged by adverse forces, or stressors. We can
clearly see the value of the endocrine system as it integrates its effects to readjust
homeostasis and to improve the chances of the self and species for survival. Our
body is made in such a way that it has its own mechanism for check and balance.
Remember, moderation is the key if we want a healthy and normal body. Right food
with healthy lifestyle plus right perspective and principle equals fruitful life.
POSTTEST
