III. OBJECTIVES
The sieve analysis determines an aggregate's particle size distribution or gradation. A
suitable gradation of aggregate in a concrete mix is desirable to ensure mixture workability and
cement efficiency. For asphalt concrete, suitable gradation only affects the mixture's workability
and the efficiency with which the other important properties are used.

INTRODUCTION
Sieve analysis is a fundamental technique in civil engineering and materials science for
determining the particle size distribution of coarse aggregates. Coarse aggregates, such as gravel
and crushed stone, are essential components of concrete, asphalt, and road bases. These
materials' efficiency and performance heavily depend on the size distribution of the aggregates
used.
Sieve analysis involves passing a sample of coarse aggregate through a series of sieves
with progressively smaller, typically stacked openings. As the material is shaken or vibrated,
particles smaller than the sieve openings pass through, while larger particles are retained on the
sieve.
Engineers can find the aggregate's particle size distribution by weighing the material
retained on each sieve and calculating the percentage of the sample mass retained. This
knowledge is essential for creating concrete mixtures with the best packing density, ensuring
asphalt mixes are properly compacted, and fulfilling requirements for different construction uses.

Information about particle shape, fine content, and uniformity in coarse aggregate
gradation can be obtained through sieve analysis. This data is used by engineers to assess

aggregate suitability for particular uses, guarantee adherence to project specifications and
industry standards, and enhance the longevity and performance of building materials.
To summarize, sieve analysis of coarse aggregates is critical to quality control and
assurance processes in the construction industry. Engineers can make better decisions about the
performance, durability, and overall quality of infrastructure projects by accurately
characterizing the particle size distribution of aggregates.

INSTRUCTION
1. Find proper weight of dry aggregate.
a. Coarse aggregate: 10000 grams use method of quartering a sample splitter.

2. Assemble sieves in the following order:

a. for coarse aggregate: 1”, ¾”, ½”, ⅜”. #4

3. Place the weighted aggregates in the top of the sieve stack and cover with the lid.
Properly secure the sieves in the mechanical shaker, shake the stack of sieve for five
minutes. In case of the absence of a mechanical shaker, shake the stack of sieve with your
hands continuously for the same time.

4. Weigh the materials that are retained on each of the sieves, including the weight retained
on the pan, and record in the data sheet. if the sums of the weight are not within 1 percent
of the original sample weight, the procedure should be repeated. Otherwise, use the sum
of the weight retained to calculate the percentage on each sieve.

5. Compute the cumulative percent retained and the percent passing each sieve.
6. Plot the gradation curves for the coarse and fine aggregates from the experiment on the
graph provided. Plot the specified gradation curves for the coarse and fine aggregates (to
be specified by the laboratory instructor). Plot the combined grading curve using 40%
coarse and 60% fine aggregate

DISCUSSION
One basic technique used in civil engineering to ascertain the aggregates' particle size
distribution is sieve analysis of coarse particles. It entails measuring the mass retained on each
sieve after running a sample of the aggregate through a succession of sieves with increasingly
narrower apertures. After that, a gradation curve is made using this data to assist in determining
whether the aggregate is suitable for use in concrete or other building materials. Shape,
angularity, and texture of the aggregate can affect the outcome and, in turn, the concrete mix's
performance. The size distribution of coarse aggregate particles in a particular coarse aggregate
sample is ascertained using the sieve analysis of coarse aggregate test. Whether the aggregate is
appropriate for use in construction applications is determined by the examination. The
workability and efficient use of cement in the mixture depend on the proper gradation of
aggregate. A set of sieves with different weights were prepared to perform the laboratory
experiment. The sieves used are 1, 3/4, 1/2, 3/8 , No.4 and the Pan. These sieves have different
weights ranging from 1000g - 6000g stacking test sieves. Its success is confirmed by the data
gathered from the sieve analysis. The cumulative percentage retained on the sieves is 100%,
indicating that the sieve analysis was successful and acceptable. The total weight of material
retained on the sieves was 9796 grams.

CONCLUSION
Sieve analysis of coarse aggregates is an essential test for determining the aggregates'
particle size distribution. Engineers can ascertain the aggregate's suitability for different
construction applications by evaluating the data gathered from putting the aggregate sample
through a series of sieves and calculating the gradation curve. It is crucial to comprehend
elements like aggregate shape, angularity, and texture in order to appropriately interpret the
findings and guarantee the best possible performance from concrete mixtures and other building
components. One crucial factor influencing the quality of concrete is the gradation, or size
distribution, of the particles. Given the cost of cement paste, it is preferable to use as little of it as
possible. To minimize spacing and fill voids, make sure the concrete mix has a wide range of
sizes. The test was conducted with different aggregate sizes and percentages in mind. The
resulting total cumulative percentage is a value percentage that is acceptable. The sieve analysis
is therefore considered successful.
