Week #16 – MODULE 1


FUNDAMENTALS OF DANCE
Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, the students are expected to:
1. Execute the basic steps with accuracy while dancing;
2. Enumerate the basic steps in the 3/4-time signature
3. Define each basic steps of 3/4 time signature

LESSON 13: BASIC DANCE STEPS IN 3/4 TIME SIGNATURE

The following basic steps are arranged in alphabetical order. It is divided into
two groups, the 2/4, ¾, and 4/4-time signature. You will notice that some
basic steps are found on both groups, it is because they can be executed in
both time signatures. These steps will be used on the following lessons.
BASIC STEPS IN 3/4 TIME SIGNATURE

MAZURKA STEP - count 1, 2, 3 to a measure.


- Slide R foot sideward (ct. 1), cut R sideward with the L foot (ct.
2), hop on L and bring the R foot in front or in rear of the L ankle
(ct. 3). This is done with one foot leading and usually in a
sideward or forward direction.

CROSS WALTZ - count 1, 2, 3 to a measure.


- Step R across L in front and raise slightly the L foot across in
rear (ct. 1), step L close to R in third in rear (ct. 2), step R
forward (ct. 3). There is a slight bending of the knees on ct. 1
step on the ball of the rear foot on ct. 2. This step usually done
in forward or sideward direction.

WALTZ BALANCE – count 1, 2, 3 to a measure.


- Step R foot forward (ct. 1), close L to R in third in rear or in first
position and raise both heels (ct. 2), lower heels with the weight
of the body on the R foot (ct. 3). This may be done in any
direction.

WALTZ STEP – count 1, 2, 3 to a measure.


- Step R sideward (ct. 1) then close L to R (ct. 2) and step R in
place (ct. 3).

REDOBA - count 1, 2, 3 to a measure.


- Slide R diagonally forward (ct. 1), cut R with L (ct. 2) and cut L
with R (ct. 3).

STEP-SWING-HOP – count 1, 2, 3 to a measure.


- Step R in any direction swing L (ct. 1) across R in front (ct. 2)
and hop on R (ct. 3).
INTRODUCTION IN FOLK DANCE

Many people enjoy learning basic steps


in folk dance in order to participate in
either a social or religious tradition, or
sometimes just to get some exercise.
Whatever your reason for learning, folk
dancing is a fun form of movement that
involves dancers from all ages and
backgrounds.

Background of Folk Dancing

Folk dancing is a broad term used to


describe a wide array of dances. Every
culture around the world has its own folk
dances, and there are usually specific
ones for big celebrations like weddings.
The term "folk dance" is simply defined as a dance that has a particular set of
steps or figures that repeat in time to music. There are also usually partners
in folk dancing, where everyone from one couple to many couples can dance
at one time.
TERMINOLOGIES IN FOLK DANCE

BOW or SALUDO

- Partners bow to each other to opposite dances or to the audience.


This term is of Spanish origin.

BRUSH

- Weight on one foot, swing the free foot in an arch, so that the ball
or heel strikes the floor at lowest point of the arch. This may be
done forward, sideward, or backward.

CLOCKWISE

- Like the motion on the handle of the clock moving to the left, when
facing the center of an imaginary circle.

COUNTERCLOCKWISE

- The reverse direction of clockwise, the hands of the clock moving


to the right, when facing center of an audience.

CUT

- Quick change of weight from one foot to the other displacing the
supporting foot.
DO-SI-DO or DOS-A-DOS

- Two people walk toward each other, pass by the right shoulder
step sideward to the right and return to position walking
backward, passing left shoulder.

DRAW

- The free foot is drawn toward the foot, which supports the body
weight, by pressing the toes against the floor as the close is made.
With or without transfer of weight.

FREE FOOT

- The foot not supporting the weight of the body.

FREE HAND

- The hand is not doing anything.

HOP

- Spring on the supporting, and land on the same.

INSIDE FOOT

- The foot near one’s partner when they stand side by side.

INSIDE HAND

- The hand near one’s partner when they stand side by side.

JUMP

- Spring from one or two feet and land on both feet.


LEAP

- Spring on the supporting foot and land on the other foot.

OUTSIDE FOOT

- The foot away from one’s partner when they stand side by side.

OUTSIDE HAND

- The hand away from one’s partner when they stand side by side.

OPPOSITE

- The person standing in opposite position across the set.

PARTNER

- Girl to the right of Boy and Boy to the left of Girl.

PLACE

- To put the foot (flat) in any desired position without putting weight
on it.

POINT

- Touch toe or ball of free foot on floor and remains there briefly.

PIVOT

- Turning on ball, heel, of one or both feet on a fixed place.

SET A

- A unit formation of two or more couples.


SLIDE

- To slide on foot along the floor smoothly, with or no transfer of


weight.

STAMP

- To bring down one foot forcibly on the floor with or without


transfer of weight.

STEP

- Touch toe or ball of free foot on floor and remains there briefly.

SUPPORTING FOOT

- The foot is carrying the weight of the body.

TAP

- Toe or ball of free foot is placed momentarily on floor and lifted


again immediately.

WHIRL

- To turn fast by executing small steps in place to right or left.
