‘GLOBAL ECONOMY’ MAPPING
Shoes:
Specific Foreign Brand: Nike
Raw Materials: Nike's footwear is made from six different basic materials such as polyester,
rubber, EVA foam, cotton, synthetic leather, and leather.
Country from which each ingredient or raw material came from:
China is the world's top producer of polyester fibers, according to a 2006 research. China is
also the world's largest polyester market, making it the worldwide polyester industry's epicenter.
Polyester is also produced in Taiwan, Korea, India, Japan, and Indonesia, and some polyester is
still produced in the United States.
Altered rubber is created by adding more benign accelerators and vegetable oils to the mix, as
well as altering the manufacturing method. Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia are the world's
leading rubber producers.
China is where the majority of Eva Foam is produced. Ethylene Vinyl Acetate is the
abbreviation for Ethylene Vinyl Acetate. Nike's Eva Foam is one of the most effective and cost-
effective materials they employ in their shoes.
Organic cotton is grown without the use of chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or defoliants. Nike
sources the majority of its cotton from China, India, Turkey, and the United States.
Synthetic leather is a man-made cloth that has the appearance and feel of real leather yet
performs better. Synthetic leather is used in many Nike goods because it is less expensive than
real leather, is more breathable, and is simpler to clean. China and Taiwan are the world's major
producers of synthetic leather.
Nike also employs LWG-certified genuine leather. Nike is one of the world's largest users of
white leather, and in order to be as effective as possible, it collaborates with tanners, suppliers,
and other distributors. Tanners and suppliers in China and Vietnam provide Nike with leather.
Countries involved in the manufacturing of the chosen product:
Nike shoes are almost entirely made outside of the United States. China and Vietnam are the
top two Nike shoe producers in the world, each accounting for 36% of total production. There are
785 contract factories with more than 1 million people creating more than 500,000 distinct goods,
with Indonesia accounting for 22% and Thailand for 6% of all Nike shoes made worldwide.
Indicate the corresponding service the country does for the product:
China forces Uighurs to labor at a Nike-supplied shoe factory. LAIXI, China — At Qingdao
Taekwang Shoes Co., a Nike supplier for more than 30 years and one of the American brand's
major facilities, employees in standard-issue blue jackets sew, glue, and press together nearly 8
million pairs of Nikes each year.
Vietnam is home to Nike's footwear, clothing, and accessories. Because labor and materials
are cheaper in Vietnam than in China, and the country has superior economic stability, it has
become a top location for footwear manufacturers.
Nike footwear is produced in four countries: China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. After
the production process is completed, the shoes are shipped to distribution centers throughout the
globe. All Nike shoes are delivered to the Nike distribution hub in Memphis, Tennessee, in the
United States. After arriving in Memphis, the shoes are sent throughout the United States to satisfy
orders placed by individuals, corporations, and other Nike distributors. Nike has distribution
locations across Africa, eight nations in the Americas, including the United States, thirteen Asian
countries, twenty-four European countries, and the Middle East, to name a few.
Aside from the Philippines, list other countries in which the product is being sold. Cite the
kinds of technology that made the creation of the product possible. Consider communications
and transportation.

Nike hires talented engineers and designers who are encouraged to accept change and
produce creative goods. Hundreds of manufacturers throughout the world use the company's design
and materials. Despite the fact that it is not yet a sustainable company, it does employ recycled and
organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, and other eco-friendly materials. However, the majority of shoes are
composed of leather, rubber, polyester, and plastic. Corn-fed animals provide the leather.
Over 500 enterprises in China and other nations get these supplies via air and sea. Cold cement
assembly, which consumes more energy than vulcanization, is used to make the majority of its
shoes. Water-based adhesive is used to connect the shoe upper, which encases the foot.
The product is stretched and given structural strength by mechanical force. EVA foam,
lightweight plastic, and mesh textiles are commonly used in the shoes. Materials that would
otherwise go to waste are recycled and repurposed to make various items like rubber playgrounds
and shoe boxes. Nike claims that more than 75% of their products are made from recycled materials.
The corporation wants to eliminate all waste from footwear production and reduce its
environmental effect by half. Nike has been developing innovative, sustainable materials that
consume less water and energy in recent years. Many of its shoes, for example, are constructed of
flyleather, which is 40% lighter and five times more durable than grain leather. It also has a reduced
carbon footprint and uses less water in the production process.
To decrease waste, the company employs new methods such as ColorDry and Flyknit.
ColorDry, for example, is a novel technique that enables fabric dyeing without the need of water.
Nike has also introduced its own range of premium recycled materials for use in the manufacture of
shoes and garments.
Write one to three statements about the creation of the product.
Shoes are developed to meet their clients' ambitions, wants, and expectations in this product
design and manufacturing. Their objective is to "inspire and innovate every athlete" throughout the
world.
Nike, like other great branding firms, recognizes that they are not in the process of marketing
athletic shoes and apparel; rather, they inspire more people towards becoming better athletes and
accomplish one‘s personal best. Nike's strategy is its "categorization offense," which began in 2008
when the company reorganized its operational processes around individual sports and has seen sales
rise by 70% since then.
What did you notice from doing this activity?
In this activity, I saw that an economic activity map focuses on cultivation, manufacturing,
and other economic activities in a country or area. This involves establishing economic ties between
different areas and countries throughout the world. These ties include the interchange of
commodities and services, cross-border financial flows, currency and material exchanges, and the
migration of people in quest of better living conditions. This gives me a broad grasp of how other
cultures and communities interact, particularly in terms of product manufacture and production.
