Unit Description
The function of the Ignition and Probe Heater Relay Unit is to be an interface between the Electronic
Engine Controller (EEC), the engine ignition system and the P2/T2 probe heater. The relay unit gets
28V signals from the EEC and outputs 115V, 400Hz supplies to the ignition system and to the probe
heater. The Relay Unit also monitors the probe heater supply and will give a signal to the EEC to
show that the heater dissipation is more than a given value. On Part Number 005-RL-04, the outputs
to the ignition system can be made manually by override inputs.
The EEC has two control channels, A and B, and there are also two ignition systems, IGN 1 and IGN
2. Each EEC channel gives two signals, one to control IGN 1 and the other to control IGN 2. The
Relay Unit will mix these signals so such a way that, for an ignition system to be energised, both the A
and B channels must give an ignition demand signal.
The Relay Unit outputs to the two ignition systems are controlled by series-connected relay contacts
which are usually closed. This makes sure that control signal or Relay Unit failure results in the
ignition system being energised, which is the necessary fail-safe condition.
On Part Number 005-RL-04, connections inside the unit let the two ignition systems be controlled by
manual override inputs.
Control of the supply to the P2/T2 probe heater is done in an equivalent manner to the ignition control.
There is only one probe heater output, controlled through parallel relays by the channel A and
Channel B inputs. This ensures that probe heating can be demanded by either of the two controlling
channels of the EEC. The contacts of these relays are usually open.
The Relay Unit contains a power sensing circuit which monitors the power dissipated by the probe
heater. This circuit is operated when probe heat is necessary and it will send a signal to the EEC
when the power being dissipated by the heater is above a pre-set value.

Unit Description
The P2/T2 probe measures total-temperature and total-pressure in the inlet of the engine. The probe
has non-removable parts: housing, dual sensing element, connector adapter, two electrical
connectors, a pitot carrier tube or pitot pressure-boss, and vibration isolators.
The housing is made of a beryllium copper alloy. An opening in the front of the housing supplies
airflow through and around the sensing element. The sensing element is in the rear of the housing.
The dual sensing elements are two resistive temperature detectors (RTDs). The RTDs are in a metal
shell and have a hermetic seal. The RTD outputs are transmitted through the electrical connectors as
resistance values. Total-pressure is sensed by the pitot carrier tube on the probe.
A heater in the probe prevents ice on the probe while the engine operates.

Unit Description
The EEC operates with a hydromechanical Fuel Metering Unit (FMU) to provide a full-authority fuel
metering system. The EEC controls autostart, ignition, thrust reverser, overspeed, and bleed systems.
The EEC uses feedback signals from position sensors to operate in a closed-loop mode.
The EEC can control engine start, climb, cruise, descent, and shutdown functions during a flight. The
EEC is also known as the Full Authority Digital Electronic Engine Control or FADEC.
The EEC is a redundant system containing two channels identified as Channel A and Channel B.
Each channel can independently control engine functions. Both channels are designed to be fault
tolerant to maintain engine control. In the event of a fault and/or failure that prevents engine control,
the controlling channel gives control of the engine to the other channel. Should the other channel get
faults or failures, control can be given to the channel most capable of maintaining engine control.
EEC software prevents repetitive control transfers between the two channels. The channels share
sensor information. This sharing of data allows the controlling channel to use the best information
available for its engine control computations. The channels synchronize their operations. Both
channels perform the same operation at staggered intervals. However, internal EEC architecture and
control signals allow only one channel to be in control at a time meaning that the backup channel has
its outputs disabled.
Note: Due to the significant number of EEC Part Numbers and Service Bulletins this
chapter has to deviate from the other chapters since the amount would go
beyond the scope of this guide. Please refer to the EIPC and to the published
Service Bulletins.

into the Vendor part number, please refer to EIPC Appendix 7.

Unit Description
The Dedicated Alternator Stator together with the rotor and in some cases together with an air shroud
builds up the Engine Dedicated Alternator (EDA). The EDA provides AC power to the Electronic
Engine Control Units (EEC) and also provides two speed signals representing the HP shaft speed
(N2).
The stator is made up of a silicon steel laminated stator core wound with high-temperature insulated
copper windings. The core is contained in an aluminum housing. A stainless steel shield covers the
stator housing to provide flame resistance. Two 10 pin electrical connectors are provided for
connection of the related harnesses. The pin configuration is identical for each connector, however
the connectors are keyed differently to prevent incorrect harness connection.
The stator has 18 teeth, which gives 1.5 stator slots per rotor magnetic pole. There are two identical
windings, wired in a three phase wye configuration, that each powers an EEC unit. There are also two
identical single phase speed signal windings. Each of these provides a frequency signal related to the
HP shaft speed. One speed signal is used for flight deck indication of N2 speed and the other signal is
used by the Engine Vibration Monitoring Unit. There are axial passages provided in some winding
slots to prevent oil from accumulating in the stator.

Unit Description
The Fuel Metering Unit (FMU) is the interface between the Engine Electronic Control (EEC) and the
fuel system. All the fuel delivered by the HP fuel pumps, which is more than the engine requires, is
passed to the FMU. The FMU under the control of the EEC, meters the fuel supply to the fuel spray
nozzles. The HP fuel pressure also provides servo operation for various engine actuators. Excessive
HP fuel that is not required, other than that for actuator control and metered fuel to the combustor, is
returned to the LP system via the spill valve. In addition to the fuel metering function the FMU also
houses the overspeed valve and the pressure raising and shut off valves.

Unit Description
The two igniter plugs are part of the engine ignition system and located on the combustion diffuser
casing at fuel spray nozzle positions number 7 and 8.
The igniter plug has an electrode washer made of platinum alloy, which gives long life to the plug.
When the ignition plug is operated, high voltage is provided by the ignition exciter and the spark-gap
of the ignition plug is ionized. Then the high energy held in the ignition exciter is released to the spark
gap. The spark ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine combustion chamber.

The No. 4 Bearing Compartment Air Cooled Air Cooler (ACAC) is located in the core compartment
th
and uses Fan air to cool 12 Stage High Pressure Compressor (HP12) air by approximately 250°C.
The cooled air is then used to cool the No.4 Bearing of the Engine. The ACAC plays a critical role in
this respect. The ACAC is a brazed, tubular construction with the hot HP12 air being passed through
a number of “U” shaped tubes, over which the cooling Fan air flows. These tubes are secured at their
open ends to a header plate at which the HP12 air inlet and outlet connections are made. The cooler
is constructed of Stainless Steel. The “U” shaped tubes pass through a series of baffle plates that
provide support across the length of the ACAC. The baffle plates are attached to the coolant air duct
by a series of tag welds. the “U” tubes also pass through an end baffle plate which is part of the ACAC
Fan air duct. The HP12 air flow configuration is two pass cross contra and the cooling Fan air single
pass.

Unit Description
The Variable Stator Vane Actuator (VSVA) is a hydraulic device that moves the unison rings to control
the angle of the variable stator vanes. It is driven by high-pressure fuel.
The Variable Stator Vane Actuator accurately controls vane movement through a torque motor current
supplied by the EEC. This in turn controls high pressure fuel flow to one or other side of a differential
area piston. The piston has an externally adjustable low speed stop at the extended end of its travel.
The high speed stop is formed by a collar which limits piston retraction. Provision is made to lock the
piston with a rigging pin for setting purposes. A control servo valve and piston type pressure drop
regulator regulates the flow to either side of the piston.

Unit Description
The High Pressure Compressor Bleed Valve is used to bleed the high-pressure compressor air flow
from the engine to the fan air stream. When the engine is static, the piston is spring loaded to the
open position. When the engine is running, a separate solenoid valve applies servo pressure to open
or close the valve. De-energizing the solenoid valve allows an external supply of servo air to act with
the spring against the compressor pressure, and open the valve. Energizing the solenoid valve vents
the servo pressure to ambient, which allows the compressor pressure to overcome the spring, and
close the valve.

The Thermocouple is a nickel chromium/nickel aluminium probe assembly designed to give two
independent e.m.f. outputs. The e.m.f. output via each pair of probe terminals is a average of three
levels of temperature immersion. The e.m.f. is produced proportional to the junction temperatures,
when the junctions of the elements are heated. The thermocouple probe is mounted within the stator
guide vane (position T4.9) and secured by bolts via the two holes in the thermocouple soleplate. The
terminals are insulated from the thermocouple head. The interconnections within the head can are
potted in ceramic cement.

Unit Description
The EGT Harness and Junction Box Assembly is made up of two cables which are connected at the
terminal studs in the junction box. This assembly is attached to the outside of the engine turbine
exhaust case. The cables are made up of four insulated chromel and alumel wires and each wire has
a chromel or an alumel lug at its end. The group of wires is closed by a metal braid to protect the
harness from high temperature and friction.
The temperature of the engine exhaust gas is changed to a direct current voltage by the four
thermocouples which are in the exhaust stream. The voltage is directly related to the temperature.
The voltage outputs of the four thermocouples are sent through the cables to the junction box where
they are averaged to cause two new outputs. These average outputs available from the “A” circuit and
the “B” circuit are harness-selected to go to the “A” channel and the “B” channel of the electronic
engine control (EEC).
The D5 engine application uses single parts, two EGT harnesses and a junction box.

Unit Description
The Air Modulating Valve controls the fan air flow through the engine oil cooler. The unit operation
starts when one of the EEC channels signals the EHSV torque motor. With the torque motor not
energized the EHSV makes the plate valve to fully open. In this mode the chamber is open to the fuel
output through the hole and the other chamber is open to the fuel input through the other hole. An 8 to
12 milliamp electrical input is necessary to put the EHSV in the neutral position. In this mode the spool
valve closes the holes. Thus pressure is held in the chambers and the plate valve will stay in its set
position.

Unit Description
The No. 4 Bearing Compartment Scavenge Valve is located in the scavenge line from the No. 4
bearing compartment, and is flanged mounted on to the nozzle opening of the de-oiler, and attached
in position by three bolts.
The unit consists of a pneumaticall operated two position valve, which is fully open at low speeds and
closed to minimum area at high speeds. A valve piston and associated valve seat operate under the
influence of HP Compressor (P10) to schedule the area of restriction in the scavenge flow line. The
scavenge flow is a mixture of air and oil. It is controlling the venting of the compartment air/oil mixture
to the de-oiler.

The air turbine starter is used to drive the HP system at engine start-up assisting the engine to
achieve a stable minimum power condition (low idle). It is driven by compressed air, from either an
external source or from the other engine. The starter motor, located on the front face of the high
speed external gearbox, comprises of a single stage turbine, a reduction gear train, a clutch and an
output gear shaft. The compressed air enters the starter, rotates the turbine and leaves through the
air exhaust. The reduction gear train converts the high speed, low torque rotation of the turbine to low
speed, high torque rotation of the gear train hub. The ratchet teeth of the gear hub engage the pawls
of the output drive shaft to transmit drive to the external gearbox, which in turn accelerates the engine
HP compressor rotor assembly. When the air supply to the starter is cut off, the pawls overrun the
gear train hub ratchet teeth allowing the turbine to coast to a stop. The engine HP turbine compressor
assembly, the external gearbox and starter output drive shaft continue to rotate.
When the starter output drive shaft rotational speed increases above a predetermined rpm, centrifugal
force overcomes the tension of the clutch leaf springs, allowing the pawls to be pulled clear of the
gear hub ratchet teeth to disengage the output drive shaft from the turbine.
