Derwydd Bach, turbines T3, T7, T9 are assumed to be operating in a noise
restricted mode where the generated power is restricted to 1.2MW. The stated
overall sound power level for the unrestricted and restricted modes of
operation is 105.4 dB(A) and 101.9 dB(A), at 10 m.s-1 respectively. The
corresponding source noise levels used in these assessments are shown in

For the purposes of a cumulative wind farm noise assessment, wind direction
effects have been considered. This is in the form of an assumed additional
attenuation value. The additional attenuation takes into account refraction
effects for an upwind receptor position and source directivity variation for a
crosswind receptor position. No additional attenuation is assumed for a
downwind receptor position.
For any given wind direction, each nearby property can be classified as being
either downwind, crosswind, or upwind of each of the turbines. If the house
is downwind (+/-75º) of the turbine no correction is required to the predicted
turbine noise level. If it is crosswind (+/-15º) of the turbine a 2dB reduction
can be made to the predicted turbine noise level. This assumption is based on
source directivity observations when a reduced noise output occurs in cross-
wind conditions. If the property is upwind of the turbine a reduction is made
to the predicted turbine noise level due to shadow zone effects, which depend
on distance and frequency. The additional attenuation due to a receptor being
located in a shadow zone has been based on the scheme described in Hubbard
& Shepherd 1990 (1). The scheme detailed in Hubbard & Shepherd 1990 is
designed for flat, homogeneous terrain. As suggested by the Wyle Research
Report (2), to take into account the hilly terrain that exists in this instance, half
the excess shadow zone attenuation to that applicable for a flat terrain is
assumed in the cumulative noise predictions below. In addition, the assumed
excess shadow zone attenuation is further reduced for properties that lie in a
partial upwind condition.
Calculations have been carried out for wind directions in increments of 45º
around the site for each site considered within the cumulative noise
assessment. Once these corrections have been made, the overall noise level
from all the turbines is calculated at each property for each wind direction.
The cumulative noise predictions presented below represent the worst-case
wind direction for each assessed property, for the most sensitive wind speed
range. Predicted cumulative noise levels applicable for other wind directions
are generally lower than those presented below.
