MEDICOLEGAL INVESTIGATION OF DEATH IN NEPAL
The medicolegal death investigation system is responsible for conducting death investigations and certifying the cause and
manner of unnatural and unexplained deaths. Unnatural and unexplained deaths include homicides, suicides, unintentional
injuries, drug-related deaths, and other deaths that are sudden or unexpected.
The system that is conducted in Nepal can be depicted as follows.
Any unnatural death/ suspicious death
Public comes first to the site
Public informs the police
Police / SOCO arrives to Crime scene +/- Forensic doctor
Police prepares an Inquest report –describing crime scene circumstance and dead
body.
Police sends the body for Autopsy along with a requisition letter , a copy of Inquest
report and body handover letter
Forensic Autopsy:
[Link]-autopsy counseling and history taking from family members
[Link] performed with collection of vital evidences (including
samples for toxicological, histopathological and other analysis

3. Samples are sent to the Forensic science laboratory for
investigation
4. Post-autopsy counseling with the family members
Autopsy report and Dead body handed
over to Police
Police then prepares a file (Misil file)
containing all reports (including
autopsy report) and handover to
government attorney (DOA)
If someone file the case within time
limit {5 years} then case goes to court
public preosecutor and defense lawyer
start the criminal proceedings where the
forensic expert who performed autopsy
will be summoned as an expert witness.
Judge gives verdict in the court
