T.P.R. (Total Physical Response) Lesson Plan

CELP/WIDA Standard(s): the language of social studies

Content Area: Social Studies

State standard, substandard & evidence outcomes:


Standard 2. Geography: Locate places and spaces using geographic tools.

Topic/Focus: locations of the school

Language Proficiency Level: Level 1 (This lesson plan is designed for beginners. You can invite them to
speak (productive language) but expect them to demonstrate their understanding through their actions
(demonstrate receptive language).

ELL Objectives: After the lesson student will be able to identify locations of the school in English and
spanish

Target Vocabulary:

Commands Vocabulary words


Look: mirar Office: oficina
Listen: escuchar Classroom: aula
Gym: gimnasio
Bathroom: baño
Library: biblioteca

Materials/Props Needed: (What pictures AND realia items do you need to teach each
word and command?)
Flashcards w/ pictures of each command and vocab word

Anticipatory Set: (What will you do to get them excited about the activity? Will you
sing or use a puppet or show pictures or show objects?)

I will show each picture and have the kids repeat

Direct Instruction/Modeling/Demonstration:
1) I will give the cue/command, “Look” in a teacher voice—repeating the command
3 times and displaying a flashcard depicting “to look.” I will pretend to look
around
2) I will then bring up the picture of a classroom and say “classroom… look in the
classroom
3) I will point to the classroom flash card every time.
4) I will say “look at the classroom” while the class shows the understanding of the
term correctly without me.
5) I will repeat steps 1-4, introducing “gym,” “office,” “bathroom,” “listen,
(sounds you find in each place)” and “library” in the same way, repeating each
word multiple times,
6) One I see that the students have masted the vocab, I will then move on to induvial
practice/assessment.

Checking for Understanding:


1. Students will hold up pictures of objects when teacher mentions the word.
2. If there is time, volunteer students will come to the front of the room and match
the picture with the vocabulary word.

Extra practice and Assessment:

As a class, the students will match the vocab word with the picture (in English and
Spanish)

Closure:
The students will repeat the word when the teacher says the command in order to review
the terms.
