Aluminum Alloy Sand Casting Specs

This document specifies requirements for aluminum alloy sand castings, including chemical composition, heat treatment processes, mechanical properties, quality requirements, and inspection procedures. It covers two aluminum alloys (SR319.0-T51 and 355.0-T7E2) for sand castings up to 3 inches in size. The document provides details on chemical composition ranges for each alloy, prescribed heat treatments for each, minimum required mechanical properties, and quality standards for castings. It also outlines procedures for inspection and rejection of materials that do not meet the specification requirements.

All requirements of ASTM B26 shall apply. Strontium-Bearing Aluminum Alloy SR319.0-T51 Aluminum Alloy 355.0-T7E2 (UNS A03550) 2. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION: 2.1 Castings to alloy SR319.0-T51 shall have the following chemical composition:
Si % Minimum % Maximum 5.5 6.5 Cu 3.0 4.0 Mn Mg 0.25 Fe Zn Ni Ti 0.10 Cr Sn Pb Sr 0.004 Other Elements 0.05

0.50 0.40 0.90 1.00 0.35 0.25 0.30 0.10 0.10 0.030

2.2 Castings to alloy 355.0-T7E2 (UNS A03550) shall have the following chemical composition:
Si % Minimum % Maximum Note

If iron exceeds 0.45%, manganese content shall be not less than one-half the iron content.

3. HEAT TREATMENT: 3.1 3.2 Heat treatment of alloy SR319.0-T51 shall consist of aging at 400 10F (204 6C) for six hours. This treatment is known as T51. Heat treatment of alloy 355.0-T7E2 shall consist of the following: 3.2.1 Solution heat treatment at 980 10F (527 6C) for 12 hours. 3.2.2 Rapid forced-air quench immediately following solution heat treatment. Forced air shall reach all parts of the casting including internal cavities. [Link] A polymer quench may be used on piston castings that do not contain pockets subject to steam entrapment, e.g., casting segments for multipiece pistons. 3.2.3 Precipitation (age) heat treatment at 440 10F (227 6C) for eight hours.

4. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES: 4.1 Mechanical properties shall be determined from two tension test specimens, separately cast in sand molds as shown in ASTM B26, and heat treated with the castings they represent. Minimum mechanical properties shall be as follows:
Ultimate Tensile Strength ksi (MPa) 30 (207) Yield Strength 0.2% Offset ksi (MPa) 18 (124) Elongation 2" Gage Length 1.0% Hardness BHN (500 kg) 65

4.2

Tensile and yield strength of specimens cut from castings shall be not less than 75% of the specified values from separately cast test bars.

5. QUALITY REQUIREMENTS: 5.1 5.2 The castings shall conform substantially to the dimensions on drawings furnished by Dresser-Rand Company. Castings, as received by Dresser-Rand Company, shall be well cleaned with fins, risers and gates removed; and free from fused-on sand, shrinkage cavities, sand holes, cracks, and any other defect which, in the judgment of Dresser-Rand Company, would be detrimental to machinability, appearance or end use of the castings. Welding or repair of castings is not permitted except in accordance with the requirements of Paragraph 5.4. Deviations from this Specification are permissible only if a waiver, stating the full extent of noncompliance, is submitted by the manufacturer and written approval is obtained from an authorized representative of the Dresser-Rand Company.

5.3 5.4

6. INSPECTION AND REJECTION: 6.1 Material failing to meet the intent and purpose of this Specification will be rejected, and the vendor will be notified. After acceptance by the vendor of the rejection, the rejected material shall be returned for full credit at prices charged, including all transportation charges.
