A. BACKGROUND ( LATAR BELAKANG)

Actually, news items are divided into two, namely news items delivered in writing
(text) and news items delivered orally. When it comes to written or text news items, we
usually find them in newspapers, magazines or tabloids. Meanwhile, we will listen to
verbal news items through television, radio, and platforms such as YouTube.

Sebenarnya, news item dibedakan menjadi dua, yaitu news item yang
disampaikan secara tulisan (text) dan news item yang disampaikan secara lisan. Kalau
news item tulisan atau teks, biasanya sering kita temui di koran, majalah, atau tabloid.
Sedangkan, news item lisan akan kita dengarkan melalui televisi, radio, hingga platform
seperti YouTube.

A. Definition of News item text (Pengertian News item text)

News item text is a type of writing that provides up-to-date information about events
that are important to report. Quoting from the British Course, in English, news item text is a text
which informs readers about the events of the day. The events are considered newsworthy or
important.

From the two meanings above, the meaning is more or less the same, yes. News item
text or English news text will convey information to readers regarding an important event that
has just taken place based on facts.

find them in newspapers, magazines or tabloids. Meanwhile, we will listen to verbal news items

News item text adalah jenis tulisan yang memberikan informasi teraktual mengenai
kejadian yang penting untuk diberitakan. Mengutip dari British Course, dalam bahasa Inggris,
news item text is a text which informs readers about events of the day. The events are considered
newsworthy or important.

Dari dua pengertian di atas, kurang lebih maknanya sama, ya. News item text atau teks
berita bahasa Inggris akan menyampaikan informasi kepada pembaca mengenai suatu kejadian
penting yang baru saja berlangsung berdasarkan fakta.

News item text aims to provide information to readers or listeners. The purpose of the
news item text is to inform readers about the newsworthy events of the day. Usually, news item
text will provide information about the latest and factual events. That way, the public can always
be updated about events in one place.
News item text bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi kepada pembaca atau pendengar.
The purpose of news item text is to inform the readers about newsworthy events of the day.
Biasanya, news item text akan memberikan informasi mengenai peristiwa terbaru/terkini dan
faktual. Dengan begitu, masyarakat bisa selalu update mengenai kejadian di suatu tempat.

C. News Item Text Structure (Struktur News Item Text)

1. Main Event/Newsworthy Event

The first news item text structure is the main event. So, what is meant by a main
event/newsworthy event is the core of the news. The main event explains the summary of the
news that will be explained.

2. Background Event/Elaboration
Then, what about the background event/elaboration? Background event/elaboration tells
in detail about the background of the incident. The details that you must include in this section
are the perpetrator, location, time of incident, other parties involved, and background of the
incident.

3. Sources
Last is sources. When writing news item text, don't forget to include the source, OK? In
English, sources are called sources. The sources referred to here can be statements, comments, or
opinions from parties related to the incident.

1. Main Event/Newsworthy Event

Struktur news item text yang pertama adalah main event. Nah, yang dimaksud dengan
main event/newsworthy event adalah inti berita. Main event tersebut menjelaskan ringkasan
berita yang akan dijelaskan.

2. Background Event/Elaboration
Lalu, bagaimana dengan background event/elaboration? Background event/elaboration
menceritakan secara rinci mengenai latar belakang kejadian tersebut. Detail yang harus kamu
cantumkan di bagian ini adalah pelaku, lokasi, waktu kejadian, pihak-pihak lain yang terlibat,
dan latar belakang terjadinya kejadian.

3. Sources
 Terakhir adalah sources. Dalam menulis news item text, jangan lupa untuk
mencantumkan sumber, ya! Dalam bahasa Inggris, sumber disebut dengan source. Sumber yang
dimaksud di sini bisa merupakan pernyataan, komentar, atau pendapat dari pihak-pihak yang
terkait dengan peristiwa tersebut.
D. Language Rules of News Item Text (Kaidah Kebahasaan News Item Text)

1. Using Action Verbs

Action verbs are verbs that show the action (action) carried out by the subject and seen by
other people. Examples of action verbs include study, play, run, eat, sleep, and many more.
Action verbs can also be called dynamic verbs. In news item text, we will often use action verbs,
for example in this sentence:
Ginting and Kevin are playing badminton in Tokyo Olympics 2020.
(Ginting and Kevin are playing badminton at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics).
So, in that sentence, there is an action verb, namely playing badminton by Subject -->
Ginting and Kevin.

2. Using Saying Verbs

Saying verbs are identical verbs that occur during conversation (saying). Usually, saying
verbs will include the results of the conversation between the reporter or the news anchor and the
source. For example:

Head of the local search and rescue agency, Wayan Suyatna said that, "So far, 34 people have
died and 16 are still being searched".
(The head of the local SAR, Wayan Suyatna said, "Until now, 34 people have died and 16 are
still being searched").

3. Using Present Tense

News item text is usually written using the simple present tense because the information
conveyed is new/warm and important (urgent). In addition, news item text is written using the
simple present tense to describe events that are still ongoing today. However, not infrequently,
news item text is written using the simple past tense. Because, news is only written when the
event has already happened.

1. Menggunakan Action Verbs

Action verbs adalah kata kerja yang menunjukkan aksi (action) yang dilakukan oleh Subjek dan
terlihat oleh orang lain. Contoh action verbs, antara lain study, play, run, eat, sleep, dan masih
banyak lagi. Action verbs bisa disebut juga dengan dynamic verbs. Pada news item text, kita
akan sering menggunakan action verbs, misalnya pada kalimat ini:

Ginting and Kevin are playing badminton in Tokyo Olympics 2020.

(Ginting dan Kevin sedang bertanding badminton pada Olimpiade Tokyo 2020).
Nah, pada kalimat tersebut, terdapat action verb, yaitu playing badminton yang dilakukan oleh
Subjek --> Ginting dan Kevin.

2. Menggunakan Saying Verbs

Saying verbs adalah kata kerja yang identik terjadi saat percakapan (saying). Biasanya,
saying verbs akan mencantumkan hasil percakapan antara wartawan atau si pembawa berita
dengan narasumber. Contohnya:

Head of the local search and rescue agency, Wayan Suyatna said that, "So far, 34 people have
died and 16 are still being searched".

(Kepala SAR setempat, Wayan Suyatna mengatakan, "Sampai saat ini, 34 orang tewas dan 16
masih dalam pencarian").

3. Menggunakan Present Tense

News item text biasanya ditulis menggunakan kaidah simple present tense karena informasi
yang disampaikan masih baru/hangat dan bersifat penting (urgent). Selain itu, news item text
ditulis dengan simple present tense untuk menggambarkan kejadian yang masih berlangsung
hingga saat ini. Namun, tidak jarang juga, news item text ditulis menggunakan simple past tense.
Karena, berita baru ditulis saat peristiwa sudah terjadi

 “So far, 34 people have died and 16 are still being searched [for],” Wayan Suyatna, head
of the local search and rescue agency, told state media on Tuesday, raising an earlier death toll of

Rescuers have been battling dangerous conditions since the eruption, searching for
survivors and bodies in the volcanic debris, wrecked buildings and destroyed vehicles. Search
crews deployed dogs on Tuesday to aid the operation.

Mount Semeru has remained active since Saturday, with small eruptions keeping
emergency workers and residents on edge. On Tuesday, there were three small eruptions, each
spewing ash about a kilometre (3,300 feet) into the sky, authorities said. Officials have advised
locals not to travel within 5km (3.1 miles) of Semeru’s crater, as the nearby air is highly polluted
and could affect vulnerable groups.

Korban Tewas Akibat Letusan Gunung Api di Indonesia Naik Menjadi 34 Jiwa

Operasi pencarian dan penyelamatan masih dilakukan untuk menemukan 16 orang hilang
setelah letusan Gunung Semeru di Jawa. Gunung berapi tertinggi di pulau Jawa ini, meletus pada
hari sabtu dan korban tewas telah meningkat menjadi 34 jiwa, kata pejabat setempat. Hingga saat
ini operasi penyelamatan masih berlangsung.

Gunung Semeru, di kabupaten Lumajang provinsi Jawa Timur, memuntahkan abu tebal
setinggi lebih dari 12.000 meter (40.000 kaki) ke langit, dengan gas yang membakar dan lava
mengalir menuruni lerengnya setelah meletus secara tiba-tiba. Bencana tersebut membuat
seluruh jalan dipenuhi lumpur dan abu, menelan rumah dan kendaraan di beberapa desa.

“Sejauh ini, 34 orang telah meninggal dan 16 masih dalam pencarian,” Terang Wayan
Suyatna, kepala badan pencarian dan penyelamatan lokal kepada media pemerintah pada hari
Selasa. Keterangan tersebut menambah jumlah korban tewas sebelumnya sebanyak 14 jiwa. Dia
menambahkan bahwa hampir 3.700 orang telah berhasil dievakuasi dari daerah yang terkena

 Tim penyelamat telah berjuang melawan kondisi berbahaya sejak letusan, mencari
korban dan mayat di puing-puing vulkanik, bangunan yang rusak dan kendaraan yang hancur.
Kru pencarian mengerahkan anjing pelacak pada hari Selasa untuk membantu operasi
penyelamatan.

Gunung Semeru tetap aktif sejak Sabtu, dengan letusan kecil yang membuat waspada
seluruh pekerja dan penduduk di daerah sekitar kaki gunung. Pada hari Selasa, ada tiga letusan
kecil, masing-masing memuntahkan abu setinggi satu kilometer (3.300 kaki) ke langit, kata
pihak berwenang. Pejabat telah menyarankan penduduk setempat untuk tidak melakukan
perjalanan dalam jarak 5 km (3,1 mil) dari kawah Semeru, karena udara di dekatnya sangat
