Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan

Science V

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
 describe soil erosion
 recognize agents of soil erosion as contributors in shaping the Earth’s surface
 demonstrate erosion by water and by wind

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Soil Erosion
Reference:
Textbook: Science Beyond Borders 5
Pages: 158-163
Authors: Evelyn T. Sarte, Ednaliza R. Garcia, Eliza A. Lopez, Mary Jean G. Dela
Cruz and Harold A. Arradaza
Materials: Laptop, pictures, plastic bottles, soil, sand, water
Values Integration: Appreciation to Nature

III. Procedures
A. Drill
Arrange the jumbled words.

WERTA DNIW ANIMSAL MANSUH

B. Motivation
Play a short video.
What is the video all about?
What do you call those happening?
What triggers soil to erode or collapsed?

C. Presentation
Today, you are going to learn more about Soil Erosion.
D. Discussion
What is erosion?
Erosion is the movement of rock fragments from one place to another.
How about soil erosion?
Soil erosion is a process that occurs when there is loss or removal of the top
layer of the soil.
Have you seen soil erosion here? Where?
What do you call the materials that are transported due to erosion?
Does soil erosion have agents?
What are those?
How does water contribute to soil erosion?
As water flows, it transports rock and soil particles from one place to another.
Have you noticed the color of the water flowing after the rain? What color is it?
Why is it brown?
The color changes depending on the rock and soil particles that it carries.
Activity 1 – Erosion by water
Students will perform the activity. Materials provided by the teacher.
Ask:
As you pour the water slowly, what happens to the soil?
How about when we pour the water rapidly, what happen?
What happen to the color of the water?
Mud left on the ground after flooding is also an evidence of erosion.
What could be the next agent?
How does wind contribute to soil erosion?
As the wind blows, it carries light particles of rocks and soil, transporting and
depositing them in another places.
Activity 2 – Erosion by wind
Students will perform the activity. Materials provided by the teacher.
Ask:
What happen to the sand when you fan/blow it?
Have you heard about sand dunes? What is it?
Sand dunes are hills of sand that are made by winds as they blow.
What do you think is the third agent?
How do animals contribute to soil erosion?
What are burrowing animals?
Burrowing animals are those who dig the ground to make a whole that serves as
protection for both food storage and defense against unfavorable environmental
conditions.
When burrowing animals dig the ground, some rock and soil particles stick to
their bodies.
Can you give me an example of a burrowing animals?
What is the last agent?
How do we humans contribute to soil erosion?
Do you know quarrying?

E. Generalization
What is soil erosion?
How many agents soil erosion have?
And those are?
Do these agents contribute in shaping the earth’s surface?
How?

F. Application
Identify each sentence. Choose your answer from the box below

Humans Water Erosion

Wind Animals

_______1. It blows away sand particles from one place to another.

_______2. The movement of rocks from one place to another.
_______3. The faster it flows, the faster the erosion could be.
_______4. They dig/scratches the ground.
_______5. Whenever they walk, the soil clings to their shoe, so the soil gets transported
from place to place.

IV. Evaluation
Write TRUE if the statement is correct. If false, change the underlined word/s to make it
correct.
_______1. The movement of rocks from one place to another is called weathering.
_______2. Sediments are materials transported due to erosion.
_______3. Flashflood can be caused by water, wind, animals, and humans.
_______4. Sand dunes are ridges of sand formed by waves.
_______5. Gardening can also cause erosion because soil moves as we mine the
ground.
_______6. The faster the flowing water, the slower the erosion would be.
_______7. Quarrying is the process of removing rock, sand, gravel from the ground.
_______8. Dunes are usually found in rivers.
_______9. Mud left on the ground after flooding is evidence of erosion.
_______10. When burrowing animals dig the ground, some rock and soil particles stick
to their bodies.

V. Assignment

Draw or cut pictures from old magazines showing different agents of soil erosion.
