CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Most of the vehicle tracking system available in the market is too costly. The
developed tracking system will send the owner the location to your mobile phone along
with the Google map coordinate. The owner can request the location at any time & view
the location on Google Maps installed on the vehicle.
GPS+GSM based vehicle tracking system was implemented. This is done by
fetching the information of the vehicle like location, distance etc. by using GPS. The
information can be transformed with the following features: the information of the phone
like location, etc. is obtained after every specified time interval defined by user. Then this
periodic information of location is transmitted to monitoring or tracking server. This
transmitted information is displayed on the display unit by using the google earth to
display vehicle location in the electronics google maps.
The importance of this study which is the Tracking systems are very commonly
used in fleet management and asset tracking applications. Today these systems can not
only track the location of the vehicle but can also report the location of the phone when
stolen and even control it remotely. This system is very efficient for outdoor application
purposes.
Statement of the Problem
2
The vehicle theft has become a very big challenge for owners especially in the
remote areas where thefts are targeting any people as long as they have a vehicle. While
tracking devices are designed to find lost items, some people have already started abusing
the technology to track people without their consent. Since trackers are small, bad actors
can easily slip them into your pocket, bag, or vehicle and track you without your
knowledge, hence the development and implementation of this system.
Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study was to develop a GPS+GSM Based Vehicle
Tracking System.
Specifically, the study aimed to:
1. Utilized a GPS device in the owner’s vehicle that can track the location of the
vehicle;
2. Develop a system that could send an SMS Notification to the owner; and
3. Developed a system that could view the exact location of the vehicle.
Scope and Limitation of the Study
The scope of the study is GPS+GSM Vehicle tracking system using Arduino that
the system locates the vehicle. The study was limited to the location and tracking the
vehicle using GPS+GSM through Arduino. The processing in rent a car is not included in
the system. For instance, that there will be a blackout, solar panel can be used.
3

Operational Definition of Terms
Arduino is an open-source electronic prototyping platform enabling users to create
interactive electronic objects
Global positioning system (GPS) is a network of satellites and receiving devices used to
determine the location of something on Earth. Some GPS receivers are so accurate they
can establish their location within one centimeter (0.4 inches). GPS receivers provide
location in latitude, longitude, and altitude.
GSM – stands for (Global Services for Mobile Communication) is a digital mobile
network that is widely used by mobile phone.
Solar Panel - are those devices which are used to absorb the sun's rays and convert them
into electricity or heat.

Tracking system, also known as a locating system, is used for the observing of persons
or objects on the move and supplying a timely ordered sequence of location data for
further processing.
Vehicle is a thing used for transporting people or goods, especially on land, such as a car,
truck, or cart.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
According to Verma, s., jamwal, A, s., Chauhan, s., & Mohanty, s. (2021). The
vehicle tracking system is a modern security and armada handling method. This module
is an example of an embedded system that can be used by vehicles to track and know the
position is known by global positioning system and global system in particular vehicle.
The proposed system is embedded in the car that provides exact real-time location and
position. Whenever there occurs any vehicle problem like robbery, accident, fire alarm,
etc., in view of these issues, a message will be delivered from the vehicle about its
position in view of latitude and longitude to the expected receiver who is asked for help.
A program is coded to get the proper position of the vehicle which is on move or steady.
In order to identify the location of the vehicle that includes Latitude and Longitude
7
position and also receive continuous data from the two effective systems used which is a
GSM and a GPS Modem identifying the position.
A vehicle tracking system is very useful for tracking the movement of a vehicle
from any location at any time. An efficient vehicle tracking system is designed and
implemented for tracking the movement of any equipped vehicle from any location at any
time. The proposed system by Monk S, (2020) made good use of popular technology that
combines a smartphone with an Arduino UNO. This easy to make and inexpensive
compared to others. The designed in vehicle device works using Global Positioning
System GPS and Global System for Mobile Communication GSM technology that is one
of the most common ways for vehicle tracking. The device is embedded inside a vehicle
those positions is to be determined and tracked in real time. An Arduino UNO is used to
control the GPS receiver and GSM module. The vehicle tracking system uses the GPS
module to get geographic coordinates at regular time interval. The GSM module is used
to transmit and update the vehicle location to a database. This paper gives minute by
minute update about vehicle location by sending SMS through GSM modem. This SMS
contain latitude and longitude of the location of vehicle. Arduino UNO gets the
coordinates from GPS modem and then it sends this information to user in text SMS.
GSM modem is used to send this information via SMS sent to the owner of the vehicle.
Location is displayed on LCD. And then Google map displays location and name of the
place on cell phone. Thus, user able to continuously monitor a moving vehicle on demand
using smartphone and determine the estimated distance and time for the vehicle to arrive
at a given destination
8
Arduino UNO. GPS is a satellite-based navigation technology that provides
accurate location and information. The GSM module is used to transmit and receive an
update from the object location to a database. Data from the numerous satellites are
received by GPS receiver in the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA)
protocol form. The system SMS contains latitude and longitude of the location of the
object. The NMEA code consists of a combination of information. Arduino is linked to
the GPS and the GSM module in the serial connection. The GPS receiver sends data to
Arduino. Then, Arduino instructs the GSM module to send the location data to the GSM
enable device in a short message form. Thus, by using the tracking system, it is easy to
calculate and get the estimate location and time for the vehicle to reach a given
destination.
As mentioned by Trimble (2019), GPS & GSM Based Vehicle Tracking Security
System combine installation of an electronic device in vehicle, with purpose-designed
computer software to enable to track the vehicle's location. In vehicle tracking systems
Global Positioning System technology is use for finding the location of the vehicle.
Vehicle location information can be viewed on electronic maps via the Internet or
specialized software. This system is useful for car theft situations, for adolescent drivers
being watched and monitored by parents exceeding speed limit, or leaving a specific area.
It also used for safe transportation in industries.
Vehicle–track coupled dynamics models Wanming Zhai, Wanming ZhaiVehicle–
Track Coupled Dynamics: Theory and Applications, 17-149, (2020). Theoretical model is
the base for the study of vehicle–track coupled dynamics problems. In this chapter, the
principle and methodology for modeling of vehicle–track coupled systems are discussed
9
at first. And then, three types of theoretical models are established: the vehicle–track
vertically coupled dynamics model, the vehicle–track spatially coupled dynamics model,
and the train–track spatially coupled dynamics model, in which typical passenger
coaches, freight wagons, and locomotives as well as typical ballasted and ballast less
tracks are included. A new dynamic wheel–rail coupling model is also established to
connect the vehicle subsystem and track subsystem. Equations of motion of the vehicle
and track subsystems are deduced and given in detail.
Tracking system for vehicles using GPS, GSM and GPRSC Keerthika,
Mallika Singh, T Tamizharasi. Research Journal of Engineering and Technology, (2020).
One of the foremost problems that governments or huge companies have to be compelled
to deal with is Vehicle Tracking. This paper describes a practical model for routing and
tracking of mobile vehicles in a large area environment using the Global positioning
system(GPS) and Global system for mobile communication(GSM). The GPS attached to
the vehicle will continuously move along with it and it will subsequently calculate the
coordinates of each position it covers. It will also communicate the location with the help
of GSM modem, which is installed in both the transmitter and receiver section, when the
user requires the position. The main focus of the paper is on explaining the
intercommunication of various technologies in a real-time system. The model includes a
GPS for gathering the position of the user, GPRS for transferring positions data to the
central server and the demonstration of the collection of this data. It further discusses the
protocols and approaches that enable the functioning of the system, along with the
economic side of the system.

Dynamic interaction between rail vehicles and vibration-attenuating slab tracks.
Liang Ling, Peibin Jiang, Kaiyun Wang, Wanming Zhai (2021), Construction and
Building Materials 258, 119545, 2020. The ground vibration and noise induced by trains
are among the most concerned issues in the field of urban railway transportation.
Therefore, many types of vibration-attenuating slab tracks have been brough in urban
railways to minimize train induced vibration and noise. Vibration-attenuating slab tracks
usually have a soft support system than that of traditional slab tracks, which on the other
hand affects the vehicle-track interaction. This paper presents a study on the dynamic
interaction between urban railway vehicles and vibration-attenuating slab tracks, in which
four typical elastic vibration-attenuating slab tracks including the resilient-fastener slab
track, elastic-supporting-block track, ladder-type sleeper track and floating-slab track are
considered. A three-dimensional dynamic model of a metro train running on different
vibration-attenuating slab tracks is formulated. This model is capable of predicting the
vehicle-track interactions under various wheel-rail excitations. The dynamic
characteristics of wheel-rail interaction induced by impulsive, harmonic and random
track defects of two metro vehicles travelling on the four vibration-attenuating slab tracks
are compared in detail. The influence of track viscoelastic properties on vehicle-track
interaction is reported. The results show that the properties of vibration-attenuating slab
tracks have a significant effect on vehicle-track dynamic interactions. The dynamic
responses of wheel-rail forces of the vehicles travelling on different vibration-attenuating
slab tracks are significantly different. The elastic-supporting-block track has the best
performance in absorbing mid- and high-frequency wheel-rail forces.

Research on the control and coordination of four-wheel independent
driving/steering electric vehicle Lisheng Jin, Linlin Gao, Yuying Jiang, Mei Chen, Yi
Zheng, Keyong Li Advances in Mechanical Engineering 9 (4), 1687814017698877
(2019). A four-wheel-independent-driving and four-wheel-independent-steering control
and coordination system is proposed by combining a four-wheel-independent-steering
control system and a four-wheel-independent-driving control system. The four-wheel-
independent-steering control system includes a linear quadratic regulator controller that
calculates four-wheel steering angles and a fuzzy logic parameter adjustor that adjusts the
linear quadratic regulator control parameters based on the vehicle steering states. The
four-wheel-independent-driving control system consists of three parts: a proportional–
integral–derivative controller for tracking the desired vehicle speed, a sliding mode
control controller, and its corresponding torque distributor for power-assisted steering. It
is particularly necessary to point out that the sliding mode control controller only works
when the activation condition is satisfied and the torque distribution strategy is developed
on the basis of the four-wheel-independent-steering control system. Simulation studies
have been conducted to evaluate the proposed system. The results show that the proposed
system can improve handling stability of four-wheel-independent-driving–four-wheel-
independent-steering vehicle effectively and have a strong robustness for driving on a
mu-split road.

Conference on Humanoid, Nanotechnology, Information Technology, Communication
and Control, Environment and Management (HNICEM), 1-5, (2019). The Internet of
Things (IoT) opens up tremendous opportunities to location-based projects that maximize
the ability of technologies with its processing power and sensors to provide location
information. Location tracking is one of the most important applications for Internet of
Things (IoT). Meanwhile, location sensing applications have become increasingly
popular on smart-phones, since many, if not, all smart phones are equipped with a
powerful sensor set, which includes GPS, Wi-Fi, accelerometer, orientation, etc. With
these powers of IoT, we came up with an idea to incorporate it in a lock. In this paper, we
propose a vehicle door latch with tracking and alert system. Our lock with tracking
device integrates GPS module, microcontroller, pneumatic lock and a battery for power
supply. A microcontroller is used to control the GPS and the pneumatic lock. The
tracking system uses the GPS module to get geographic coordinates. The alert system
will activate when the lock is closed but the door is not in its position, which only means
the door is not intact with the latch. A unique website is built for accessing location data
and control to lock and unlock. In order to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the
system, this paper presents experimental results of the vehicle tracking system and some
experiences on practical implementations. Our device is high in mobility, accurate in
positioning, and is with fast enough response time which is dependent on the speed of the
internet.
Vehicle‐Integrated Photovoltaics Irradiation Modeling Using Aerial‐Based
LIDAR Data and Validation with Trip Measurements Evgenii Sovetkin, Jonas Noll, Neel
Patel, Andreas Gerber, Bart E Pieters Solar RRL, 2200593, (2022) Herein, a benchmark

dataset for vehicle‐integrated photovoltaics irradiance modeling is proposed. The vehicle
trip data consist of trips in the state of North Rhine‐Westphalia in Germany starting from
March 2021, which amounts to more than 73 h and a total distance of 3422 km. The
sensor box is equipped with GPS, a magnetic compass, acoustic wind, and irradiance
sensors and records at a rate of 0.58 Hz. The irradiance sensors are positioned on four
sides of the vehicle: roof, left, right, and rear. In addition to the data, a model that uses
high‐resolution aerial‐measured topography (LIDAR) and low‐resolution satellite‐based
weather data to forecast the effective irradiation of modules mounted on a moving
vehicle is discussed. The utility of the simulation approach is demonstrated by computing
irradiation over long periods for various driving profiles and comparing results with the
collected measurement data. The data are published as a challenge, and the developed
software is available in open source.
