ENGINE OIL --
ENGINE OIL -- OIL
OILSTORAGE
STORAGE -- GENERAL DESCRIPTION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Purpose
The oil tank is a reservoir for the engine lube system and engine components.

Location
The oil tank is on the right side of the fan case.

Physical Description
The tank attaches to the fan frame at three points.

The tank is serviced with oil through the filler cap. These are the tank capacities:
- Total volume - 4.7 US gallons (18 liters)
- Oil capacity - 4.3 US gallons (16 liters)
- Usable oil capacity - 4.0 US gallons (15 liters). These are the components on
the oil tank:
- Filler cap
- Oil supply tube
- Scavenge return tube
- Vent tube
- Anti-siphon tube
- Oil quantity transmitter
- Scupper drain
- Sight glass
- Drain plug.

General Description
During engine operation, oil circulates through the tank. Oil is drawn by the pressure
pump and replaced by oil from the scavenge pumps. The returning oil goes through
an oil/air separator in the tank. This allows air and oil vapor to be vented.

Pressure oil is tapped off the aft sump supply and used to pressurize the anti-siphon
tube at the oil tank. This oil pressure is higher than the vent pressure and it keeps air
out of the anti-siphon outlet line. When the engine is shutdown, supply oil pressure
drops. Vent pressure forces air into the anti-siphon line. This injection of air disrupts
the suction of oil out of the tank to let oil stay in the oil tank after engine shutdown.

Training Information Point

Inspection of the oil tank quantity and servicing of the tank with oil must be done
within thirty minutes of engine shutdown. Oil servicing is through a gravity fill port.
Any oil spillage is drained from around the filler cap by a drain tube.

ENGINE OIL --
ENGINE OIL -- OIL
OILPUMP
PUMP ASSEMBLY
ASSEMBLY - - GENERAL
GENERALDESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION

Purpose
The oil pump assembly has a pressure and a scavenge pump. The pressure pump
supplies oil to the engine components. The scavenge pump recovers the oil from the
oil sumps.

Location
The oil pump assembly is on the aft lower side of the accessory gearbox.

Physical Description
The oil pump assembly is driven by the engine gearbox. There is one pressure
pump and three scavenge pumps.

The filter assembly has a clogging indicator and a bypass valve.

A pressure relief valve is on the oil pressure discharge line. The valve opens at 304
psi to let the excess pressure go to the scavenge system.

The three chip detectors collect ferrous and nonferrous materials. The detecftors are
locked in place and secured by a retention bar.

ENGINE OIL -- PRESSURE FILTER AND RELIEF VALVE - GENERAL

DESCRIPTION
Purpose
The pressure filter assembly cleans the oil before the oil lubricates components. If the
filter becomes blocked (clogged), the oil bypasses the filter to allow continuous oil
circulation during engine operation.

Location
The filter assembly is an integral part of the lube unit.

Physical Description
The filter assembly consists of a cleanable/disposable filter cartridge, check valve,
and a combined clogging indicator and bypass valve.

Operation
Oil from the pressure pump flows through the filter cartridge and a check valve to
provide lubrication.

The clogging indicator and bypass valve operate when the differential pressure
across the filter is high. The indicator operates at 11.6 to 14.5 psid and the bypass
valve opens at 17.4 to 20.3 psid.

To reset the clogging indicator, remove the glass inspection cup and push the
plunger. The bypass valve resets automatically.

ENGINE OIL -- SCAVENGE CHIP DETECTOR - GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Purpose
The three chip detectors are used to help identify an impeding failure of components
lubricated by the oil system.

Location
The chip detectors are on the engine lubrication unit. They are in the three
scavenge return ports before the oil goes to the three scavenge elements. A retention
bar makes sure the detectors stay in the installed and locked position.

Operation
During engine operation, oil continuously goes through the detectors. Ferrous and
non-ferrous particles from the lubricated components are picked up by the detectors.
These particles are held against the magnets and screens of the detectors for
inspection after detector removal.

Training Information Point

You remove, inspect, clean, and reinstall the chip detectors during regularly
scheduled inspections. You must move the retention away remove and reinstall the
chip detectors. Check valves close when the chip detectors are removed. These
check valves prevent loss of oil through the lube unit when the detectors are not
installed. An early detection of particles is useful to find the interior condition of the
components

lubricated by the oil system. After you find the serviceability of the lubrication system,
clean and reinstall detectors.

A special tool is recommended to remove and install the chip detectors, especially
when they are hot.

ENGINE OIL -- SCAVENGE OIL FILTER - GENERAL DESCIPTION

Purpose
The oil that leaves the three scavenge pumps goes through the scavenge filter. This
makes sure the oil is clean before it goes through the servo fuel heater and the
fuel/oil heat exchangers.

Location
The oil scavenge filter is on the accessory gearbox aft face.

Physical Description
The scavenge oil filter assembly consists of a disposable filter cartridge, and bypass
and check valves. The filter head houses the oil temperature bulb. Connections to a
remote differential pressure switch are in the oil inlet and outlet lines.

A red clogging indicator in a clear plastic inspection bowl is in the bypass valve
housing. This indicator shows that the filter is clogged.

Operation
When the differential pressure across the filter gets to 28 to 34 psid, the red clogging
indicator is visible through in the bowl. If the differential pressure increases to 36 - 39
psid, the filter bypass valve opens. Scavenge oil is no longer filtered but still allowed
to flow.

At low operating oil temperatures the clogging indicator is prevented from operating
by internal bimetallic assembly.

Training Information Point

If the clogging indicator operates, it must be manually reset. To do this, remove the
inspection bowl and push the indicator back to the retracted position. After reset is
complete, install and tighten the bowl.

To remove and replace the filter cartridge, remove the filter bowl.

ENGINE OIL -- OIL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM - FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

Functional Description
Oil from the tank goes to a pressure pump in the oil pump assembly. It then goes
through a filter and to the two gearboxes and bearing cavities. It provides lubrication
and cooling.

The supply oil for the aft sump is also used to pressurize the anti-siphon tube
connected to the oil tank.

During operation, if the oil pressure is too high, a relief valve opens. This sends the oil
to the scavenge system.

Oil is scavenged from the bearing sumps and gerboxes by the three scavenge
pumps. Scavenge oil passes through these components before it returns to the oil
tank:
- Chip detectors
- Scavenge filter
- Temperature bulb
- Servo fuel heater
- Fuel/oil heat exchanger.

Bypass valves allow continous oil flow when the pressure and/or scavenge filters
clog. The filters have a pop-out type clog indicators. For the scavenge filter, a
differential pressure switch monitors the filter.

The oil system is vented to the outside through an outlet at the rear of the engine.
These are the components connected to the indicating system in the flight
compartment:
- Oil quantity - indicator
- Oil temperature - indicator
- Oil Pressure - indicator and light
- Scavenge oil filter high differential pressure (clogging) - light.
