AROUNDtheTREE

AROUNDtheTREE is a proudly Portuguese brand, is an

ambitious project of a team who believe in the values

of cultural and Portuguese traditions giving them a

new interpretation through the design of unique pie-

ces. The main legacy is the family connection of this

team to one of the greatest icons of Portuguese de-

sign of the 50’s, the chair from Gonçalo Rodrigues dos

Santos, which still remains the main image in Portu- DESIGN THAT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF
guese emblematic outdoor spaces. No less important

is the cultural heritage and passion of this young team.

The industry’s treatment of cork and wood combine

advanced technology with ancient methods, all with

the purpose of sourcing the exclusive materials. The-

se two heritages make AROUNDtheTREE an original

brand that is distinguished for having the perfect com-

bination of the two elements in their DNA, design and

nature.

(Portuguese National Museum of Design).

AROUNDtheTREE won the award, Silver Award 2014

by A’Design Awards with the Portuguese Roots Chair.

WOOD
A high quality wood product could last a lifetime.

Wood is a material that’s simple to use, to maintain and to

repair.

The richness of wood gives our home interior a feeling

of comfort and joy. Wood blended with other materials,

makes it more beautiful and useful and we can’t imagine

a better blend then cork… it just feels natural! After all,

cork is the outer bark of a special variety of oak tree. To

emphasize this fusion, we use natural oils to reveal all the

organic beauty of wood and at the same time enable it to

“breathe”.

CORK
• 33% of the world’s total area of cork oak forest is concentra-
ted in Portugal!
• It takes 45 years to harvest the first high quality cork
• Cork trees can be harvest every 9 years (producing around 45
KL of good quality cork).
• It can be harvest around 16 times during its life.
• A cork tree lives between 150 to 200 years!
• A cork tree can reach 25 meters height.
• The scientific term for cork oak tree is “Quercus Suber L”
• The main characteristics of cork are: lightness, impermeability
to liquid and gases, compressibility, elasticity, insulator
(thermic, acoustic, anti-vibrant), doesn’t burn in live flame, higly
abrasion resistant.
• Each cubic centimetre of cork contains around 40 million cells
and each cell is filled with gases similar to air!

The Cork is unique, from the outer bark of the evergreen cork
oak (Quercus suber). The life cycle of cork, as a raw material,
starts with the extraction of the bark from cork oaks. The so-
-called harvesting or stripping, which is carried out during the
most active stage in the annual growth of the cork occurs from
mid-May or early June to the end of august. But it is, above all,
a material that is one hundred per cent natural, recyclable and
reusable, essential qualities in a more environmentally friendly
and less polluted modern society.
THE HISTORY
The history of this chair goes back to the post-war era, the late forties (40’s), to a

time of master craftsmen, in which Gonçalo Rodrigues dos Santos, founded of a

small weld shop in Lisbon. Proud of his art and labor, a true all-rounder producing

at the time a variety of products such as juice extractors, shoe heels, etc … and at

a certain point, chairs. Master Gonçalo Rodrigues dos Santos . The leap towards

the chairs production came from his tube bending invention, a machine that he

maintained hidden at all times and only on weekends would he perform his lonely

tasks in an effort to keep his secret safe. In those days, and according to master

Serafim’s testimonies, ergonomics were

based on workers opinions who after every model’s completion were asked to

sit down and evaluate its comfort.

Whenever unanimity was achieved, the final model was found and it was then,

back in 1953, outside the “Café Lisboa” in the Avenida da Liberdade . It was

in the late sixties that the Gonçalo chair reached its peak. After 1974, the year of

the Portuguese revolution, and the disappearance of master Gonçalo Rodrigues

dos Santos, a new revolution arose, one of plastic and counterfeit. It is now to us, a

new generation of “believers”, who have learned from the very best, the responsi-

bility of honoring and to continue to add value, material and history, to one of the

greatest national icons. The eager to value such patrimony, establishes itself by

the hand of Alexandre Caldas, who at age 15, entered the world of Furniture and

Soraia Rangel degree in marketing and advertising and completely in love design .

History repeats itself… but this time…

with a totally different will… to show out chair to the world!...

AROUNDtheTREE proudly presents its new Portuguese Roots Chair, inspired by its original 1953

model, from Gonçalo Rodrigues dos Santos.

On top of its exclusive design in solid wood and natural oil, that provides this model with a unique

and classy finish, we also add a main element of comfort, durability and impermeability from the

natural cork fabrics. Like the Portuguese Roots Chair, all parts are made by an experienced team that

combines handmade methods and state of the art technologies.

The Portuguese Roots Design History is unique. The chair is it self a storyteller as well. 60 years latter is also a tribute to those

how create great products without knowing, that what they were doing was pure and good design. With this idea came the

knowledge of the Portuguese arts and traditions. We also are a sustainable Country and for that reason the wood and cork

where bound together. this project represent people, culture and a country. It was time to tell a story, and what might be bet-

ter then trough design ?

guese ROOTS Chair and Table hand-painted with the original technique of painting on tile. For five centuries, the tile holds a

prominent position among the Portuguese decorative arts. Although throughout its history has suffered multiple influen-

ces, it has developed in Portugal very unique characteristics. Therefore, this collection is itself a tribute to our traditions.

 The fact of being higher in the back create a slope which allows a better reading and writing. This difference combined

with the 48 degree tilt of the front drawers, creates an illusion of thickness that completely eliminates the viewing of all

the front storage when we are standing at it . The inner hole in one leg carries internal electric power cable that allows

to plug peripheral electrical appliances in the center console, eliminating the cables from the outside .

The construction of the legs in an “ X “ mode , confers an extreme
stability without further lockups, since the locking is already part of
the design.
Also the way the top trapdoors are designed conceals the hinges,
making imperceptible the way they open and close.
We don`t think only about exterior design when we do it , but

in all dimensions of their use. that’s why we inject electrical

power in LOCUST veins.

In 1953, a year that witnessed not
only the birth of the ROOTS CHAIR
but also the arrival of a landmark in
design, a square tripodal tabletop,
Portuguese ROOTS TABLE. This fea-
ture was introduced with a purpose:
to bypass the fairly uneven Portu-
guese traditional pavement.Roots

Renewed today for an indoor use,
but the solution functionality still
has its room. It bonds with the 1953

It was not just an aesthetic concept of building a spider shaped

lamp which in itself would be interesting, but also exploit the

potential that the species itself could bring to this object. It was

from this assumption that we quickly realized that our spider

could carry the light into many places creating a dynamic space

and different light according to their localization.

In a table it becomes visible down the ceiling becomes more

imposing, whereas in a corner of the house reveals itself more

friendly and discreet framing the light in different ways.

functionality.

With a closer look at everything around the trees, we found

that it’s the little things , like insects and plants that give life
to our forests. There is a universe of giants, rich in interaction
that Holds us the admiration and inspires us to bring into our
homes a little bite more of that world to warm them up…

The cork fabrics are very special, feels somewhat like suede, but are natu-
rally water resistant, inert, light weight, impermeable to liquids
and gases, vibration damping and resistant to wear and temperature

The cork fabrics are naturally hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial and anti-fun-
gal. All our patterns are made from natural cork without artificial colo-
ring. The different patterns are achieved only with a combination of dif-
ferent bonding and cutting of the cork.

Burel is an artisanal Portuguese fabric made entirely from wool and comes from
the mountain regions of Portugal. After being carded, the wool is transformed into
a mesh. The mesh is then twisted in the spinning process and turned into thread.
The thread is then woven into a fabric, which is then transformed into bunting at
the loom. The bunting is then submitted to a pounding process and other proces-
ses, until it is finally transformed into burel. Burel is a very resistant and versati-
le fabric that has evolved from being used for capes and coats for rainy, snowy
or cold days up in the mountains, to now being incorporated in new ideas and de-
sign solutions, accompanied by a vast range of textures, patterns, and colours.
