Year 7 Science - 7la Making Sounds

The document discusses how sounds are made and their properties. It explains that sounds are produced by vibrations which cause air molecules to vibrate and transmit the vibrations as sound waves. The pitch of a sound depends on its frequency, while the loudness depends on the amplitude of the sound waves.

UNIT-7LA- MAKING SOUNDS

LO: To understand how are different sounds made.

Warm up

Hummingbird ‘hums’ and makes

sound while flapping its wings
very fast.

Think like a ‘scientist’ –

How is this sound produced?

How sounds are made

• The vibration of the air molecules around the hands shake the molecules next to them and so on,
until the air molecules in the ear are vibrating.
• Like light, sound travels through the air in waves.
• Sound is made by air molecules vibrating.
• When you clap your hands, the air around your hands shakes. This is the air molecules vibrating.

Have you ever felt a speaker when the sound is on?

It vibrates.

How sounds are made

Sound travels as vibrations (forward and backward
movement) between air particles.

The Vibrations
object reach our
vibrates ears

This makes air particles vibrate so the

vibrations are passed through the air

Pitch and frequency of sound

• The pitch of a sound is our ear’s response to the frequency of
sound.

• The pitch of sound is determined by the frequency of vibration of

the sound waves that produce them.

• Frequency is the measure of ‘how fast the vibrations’ are.

• Frequency is measured in Hertz (HZ).

Number of waves per second is called frequency.
Higher frequency = faster vibrations = higher pitch.

Measuring Sound Frequency
Your phone is set to ‘vibration’ mode. It vibrates 120 times in a
minute. What will be the frequency of the sound produced by your
phone?

2 Hz

120 / 60 = 2 Hz
we will divide it by 60 as there are 60 sec in one min.

Amplitude
• Sound is formed as waves. Just like any other wave, a sound wave can be big or small.

• The distance between to the 2 waves is called a Wavelength.

• The size of the vibration (wave) or the wave height is called an AMPLITUDE.

LO: To understand how are different sounds made.

To make sound an object must vibrate.

For example:
• A guitar string
• Our vocal cords
• Ridges on a male grasshopper’s hind legs

Self-Assessment

We are now going to reflect on our learning and think about

how well we have understood today’s L.O.

I tried my best to achieve the LO but I would like some more help with this.

I was able to answer some questions independently and I am becoming more confident.

I was able to answer all questions confidently and independently. I think I have achieved
the LO today.

Exam Style question

1. Analyze How is the Sound waves leave a source with a certain amount of
amplitude of a sound wave related energy and, therefore, a certain amplitude. Loudness is
to energy? how you perceive the energy of a sound wave. A wave
with a greater amplitude will produce a louder sound
and will have higher energy.

2. Which wave will produce louder

sound?

Wave D below has a larger amplitude than wave E. This

means wave D shows a LOUDER
sound than wave E
