Vinci Airports and Arlandastad Group AB signed a purchase
agreement in March 2022 that will enable the latter to develop
484ha of land at Skavsta Airport in partnership with the
municipality of Nyköping, paving the way for the development
of a logistics zone, a large-scale business park and one of the
largest solar power plants in Sweden.
The solar power plant will be developed, financed, built
and maintained by SunMind, a Vinci Concessions subsidiary,
and will cover an area of 100ha with a capacity of almost
100MWp. Connected to the public grid, it will supply energy
to the municipality of Nyköping. Arlandastad Group and Vinci
Concessions will also explore opportunities for developing a
program of photovoltaic power plants in Sweden, particularly
using land in Arlandastad Group’s portfolio.
Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of Vinci Concessions and president
of Vinci Airports, commented, “This double success marks both
a structuring step for Vinci Concessions’ photovoltaic business
and the continuation of our airport strategy, based on investing
in assets with high growth potential. We are very pleased to be
working with Arlandastad Group, a sound partner to the Nordic
photovoltaic market, and a company that will continue the
development initiated by Vinci Airports at Stockholm Skavsta,
in partnership with the municipality of Nyköping.”

Better connected
Orlando’s South Terminal Complex (STC) connects to an Intermodal
Terminal Facility (ITF) completed in 2017 and will provide a level of rail
connectivity seldom seen in US airports. GOAA’s recent recruitment
of CEO Kevin Thibault from his previous post as Florida Secretary of
Transportation underlines its commitment to intermodal transformation.
“From 2023, passengers can board a Brightline train to Miami
directly from the terminal,” Thibault says. “The section of line from West
Palm to Orlando is nearing completion and negotiations are underway
to extend it onward to Tampa.” Brightline, an intercity service capable
of 193km/h, would then connect three of Florida’s principal airports.
A central pedestrian boulevard runs from STC’s 15 Phase One
gates to the Intermodal Terminal. Besides forthcoming Brightline
services, it will connect passengers to the North Terminal via an
automated people mover (APM). Plans are afoot to extend Central
Florida SunRail commuter services to the airport, enabling GOAA
employees to come to work by train.
Florida aspires to create a future beyond the USA’s historic love
affair with the automobile. “New York and Washington DC have realized
they can’t move people efficiently by car,” continues Thibault. “With its
tremendous growth, Florida is reaching that point. By building direct
intermodal connections, we will also provide European travelers with
a sense of familiarity.”
“For decades now, there has been a healthy push from both local
municipalities and the federal government to improve intermodal
transportation at airports throughout the US,” says Curt Fentress.
“GOAA now has an exceptional facility, which seamlessly

remain critical to how
S tate-of-the-art airport restrooms shouldn’t
have to be a flight of fancy. Designers and
engineers are keen to prove that function
can work alongside style, accessibility,
inclusivity and sustainability to make an essential part of
the airport experience work for everyone. Take the carefully
considered arrangements at Kansas City International
Airport’s (KCI) 39-gate New Terminal, which tick all these
boxes and more. All involved have worked hard to ensure
highly passengers every traveler’s needs are met, from larger, dedicated
facilities for PRMs and their families seeking extra space
rate an airport and privacy, to all-gender restrooms on each concourse
(in addition to gendered restrooms) featuring individual
cubicles with washing facilities and floor-to-ceiling doors
for those who require the assistance of a caregiver of a
different gender, as well as transgender and gender-diverse
individuals. In fact, since the airport announced
its groundbreaking gender-neutral facilities, Kansas City,
Missouri City Council has passed an ordinance making this
a requirement in all new public buildings.
Family-friendly features in all KCI New Terminal
restrooms include changing stations with integrated
trash receptacles, lower sinks so that children can reach
the faucets more easily, a shelf for belongings, and hooks
at various heights in each stall. Nursing rooms provide
travelers with a quiet, private space to feed their infants,
and dedicated service animal relief areas even ensure
travelers of the four-legged kind are catered for.

Engineering insight
Henderson Engineers was the lead engineer for the
mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology services
on KCI’s New Terminal project. “We’ve been involved in
the project since 2017, working hand in hand with local
trade partners, the architects and the design-builder to
incorporate the vision of the Aviation Department and
the City of Kansas City, Missouri,” explains James Dietz,
aviation practice director at Henderson Engineers. “As a
part of our scope, we’ve had influence on the fixture and
equipment types, configuration and the functionality of
the restrooms at KCI.”
The Aviation Department felt the restrooms in KCI’s
old terminals were inadequate in terms of the number of
facilities as well as their accessibility, the lack of user-friendly
amenities and the ability to service them efficiently. The
restrooms in the New Terminal are vastly improved, with

to speed travelers to available bathroom stalls when nature
calls, and help staff identify those facilities that are free to
be cleaned. Much like a parking system, a light at the top of
each stall flashes red when the stall is occupied and green
when it’s vacant.
In addition to occupancy indicators, the Aviation
Department went with smart technology that will monitor
the efficiency of a variety of fixtures, including whether
soap dispensers are almost empty and need a top-up,
and whether paper towels are running low. “All of these
elements create a seamless experience for travelers and the
airport operations team,” says Dietz.
However, good old-fashioned, common-sense design is
equally evident. “There are also two wings to each restroom
that are partitioned by a wall in between,” continues Dietz.
“In a sense, it’s two separate restrooms that are accessible
from a single entryway. This setup allows one side of the
restroom to be closed for maintenance or cleaning while
the other side remains open.”
KCI’s bathroom stalls are also larger than All new public

facilities The compartmental nature of the design configuration
made piping and valving a challenge. Henderson worked
with trade partners on the project to model each line and
valve in detail to ensure they are set up correctly, using
3D modeling to ensure all the piping fits correctly and is
accessible to the airport’s operations team. Each restroom
also has its own water heater. Dietz notes, “All hot water in

GENSLER’S
GOLDEN RULES
• For planning restroom locations, look at
spaces where there are people (near gates, near
commercial areas, after a checkpoint) in addition
to capturing distance criteria. This alleviates
peak loads for deplaning passengers as well as
those who need these amenities close to where
they are, without over-taxing inadequately sized

you have to pay attention to mirrors and avoid

Another challenge is meeting fixture count requirements

not allow all-gender multi-user fixtures to count toward
the base code requirements for separate male and female

locations to not reduce our base requirements.”
Footprint and size is another challenge not often

As more airports invest in 5G

connectivity, what opportunities does
the technology provide for operators,
stakeholders and passengers?

5G

T he arrival of 5G connectivity at airports is

so close it is almost tangible. Problems at
US airports have grabbed headlines and
confounded many, but these issues are
limited to the specific deployment of 5G technology in the
US (see Safety concerns on page 49) and are being managed.
Elsewhere, towers are up and airports are spreading their
wings to capitalize on the opportunities.
According to Martin Smillie, vice president of
communications and data exchange portfolio at SITA, one of
the most significant advantages of 5G technology for aviation
is that it enables expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT),
allowing the management of far more data and objects.
He explains, “4G technology can manage around 10,000
devices in each square kilometer; a 5G network can manage
a million. Multiple objects at airports will interact with
people, and objects will interact among themselves. With 5G,
connectivity will be much more fluid and flexible.
“The new networks will enable massive data flows,
providing secure, real-time, predictive and historic views of
airport operations. This will make collaboration between
airports, airlines, ground handlers, air traffic managers and
concession holders easier and more effective. 5G and IoT
can benefit all airport sections, whether airside, in-terminal
or landside, to achieve critical safety, efficiency, cost-
effectiveness and profitability objectives.”

Smillie also suggests that with the “superior coverage

of 5G”, airports can supply airport stakeholders with
connectivity that is “more secure and reliable” than wi-fi.
“This will allow ground services staff to do their jobs more
effectively by extending coverage. Pilots and on board
crew can also receive real-time data and updates on their
devices, even inside the airplane. Airlines can offload aircraft
diagnostic and operational data.”
The low latency of 5G (the shorter delay in data
transmission) “will make autonomous vehicles much safer”,
according to Smillie. “With signals going up to 100 times
faster than 4G, the speed of digital instructions will make the
difference between a vehicle traveling tens of meters or just
a few centimeters before taking corrective action,” he adds.

5G

Another advantage of 5G connectivity is allocating

dedicated connectivity resources wherever needed. As
airports evolve from passenger terminals to cities and
business hubs, the need for super-efficient connectivity
increases for all airport stakeholders, including retail,
business centers and hotels.
“Each of these individual businesses has its connectivity
requirements where 5G allows the spectrum slicing
[partitioning off of segments of the 5G network] to dedicate
[connectivity] to each business unit, separating traffic for
private and public or passenger use,” Smillie explains. There
is also a safety advantage: “Airports have always had to deal
with emergencies. 5G allows IoT to provide predictive data
to identify the potential crisis earlier, and remote HD [high
definition] video to enable better handling of situations
even on the apron, where traditional public or wired
networks may not provide coverage,” he adds.

Accelerating connectivity
According to Thomas Romig, ACI World vice president

wireless systems, including both transmitters and receivers.”
This may lead to future updates to FAA policy, and perhaps
a lively debate between regulators.
In other countries, the separation of allocated bands is
deemed sufficient to avoid interference. ACI’s Thomas Romig
explains, “What we’ve been seeing and what we’ve been
talking about with our members is airport operators can still
leverage the capabilities of 5G. You just need to make sure
that the antenna’s positioning and the array don’t directly
interfere with the flight path or with the trajectory of other
equipment on the airport. To a certain extent, it has been or
is easy to resolve. But in the first phase, that safety aspect
needs to be studied in detail with a site-specific approach.”

Stakeholder engagement
Like any other infrastructure program at the airport,
it is essential to engage stakeholders in 5G deployment
by highlighting opportunities, addressing concerns and
defining and refining use cases. As SITA’s Smillie explains,
“We have started discussions with airports and other
stakeholders around the benefits of 5G. Many countries
already offer airports the possibility to lease the 5G
spectrum. Still, government regulatory agencies need to
understand how this can make the transportation industry
safer and more efficient. The rollout of 5G networks and the
possibility for airports to lease a private 5G spectrum will
make the transition much faster.”
At Athens, Papagiannopoulos says the airport operators
act as the stakeholders’ “orchestrators and enablers” when
introducing innovative solutions like 5G-based services. In

BAGGAGE HANDLING

The formation of a new industry

alliance signals a push toward
bringing baggage handling to the
top of the sustainability agenda

A irports have had sustainability

on their agendas for years, with
347 of them worldwide now
part of ACI World’s Airport
Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. The program
enables airports to address their CO2 emissions in a
variety of ways, including “better insulation and energy
efficiency, switching to green energy sources, investing
in hybrid, electric or renewable gas service vehicles,
encouraging employees, passengers and visitors to use
public transportation [and] working with airlines and
air traffic management to reduce runway taxiing times
and implement green landing processes”, according to
the ACI ACA website.
However, a major part of the travel process is missing
from that list: baggage handling. “Over the years there
have been so many sustainability initiatives, the most
recent being the Toulouse Declaration [see box, page
56], but nowhere do they talk about baggage,” argues
Marlon van der Meer, founder of BagsID, a Netherlands-
based designer of software for computer-vision baggage
identification. “If you look at an airport, in some cases
67% of all terminal square meters are used for baggage
processing, so why are we avoiding the topic?”
This is why, in December 2021, BagsID partnered
with NACO (Netherlands Airport Consultants) to form
the Green Baggage Alliance, a group focused on raising
awareness around, and reducing, the environmental
impact of baggage throughout its journey. The group
currently comprises 15 airports, 15 technology partners
and several airlines that will work together to push for
a greater environmental focus on baggage handling.

Why isn’t baggage on the agenda?

According to van der Meer, airports and airlines tend
to focus on what is important for the passenger, and
baggage unfortunately comes quite far down the list of
topics being discussed. “From the perspective of airlines,
who are the major clients of the airport and influence
a lot of airports’ decisions, there is a ‘below the wing’
and ‘above the wing’ discussion. In the boardroom,
everything above the wing is important, and all the
attention goes toward that,” he explains. “Below the
wing, things like electrification and biofuels, they are
understood, but the impact of baggage on an airline’s
green credentials is less well known.”
But with over four billion bags being checked in
globally every year, according to SITA, and each one
having an impact on CO2 emissions, surely baggage
handling plays an integral part in the ambitions of
airports and airlines to be greener?

Per Engelbrechtsen, Beumer Group robust, most durable and also flexible, of course. Their
layout should be designed to be as energy saving and
environmentally friendly as possible, with the lowest

Addressing the way in which baggage is processed is
also important to reduce its environmental impact, with
Spoor suggesting that remote check-in and reclaim could
be the way to go. “We need to find other ways of getting
the bags to and from the airport, which are more efficient
and have a lower carbon footprint. And if we can do that,
then the passenger can come in a different way to the
airport, by public transportation, for example, if they
don’t have to carry a bag, so the carbon footprint there
will also be lower,” he explains.
Ultimately, knowledge is power when it comes to
bringing about change. Understanding how each part
of the baggage handling operation is connected and
where the changes can be made will be the key to making
baggage handling more sustainable. “There are steps

Staffing shortages
On April 8, 2022, Charlie Cornish, CEO of UK airport operator
Manchester Airports Group (MAG), issued a statement
apologizing for the considerable delays experienced by
passengers at Manchester Airport due to extreme staff
shortages. “I cannot apologize enough for the disruption
people have faced,” he said.
According to media reports, the shortage resulted in
some passengers spending between three and seven hours
queueing for passenger processing, with many missing their
flights. However, Manchester Airport isn’t alone – delays and
cancellations have also occurred at London Heathrow, Dublin
and other major airports in the UK and Ireland.
In response to the staff shortage, Manchester Airport will
be recruiting and training officers, having already interviewed
more than 4,000 people over the last two months. However,

Exclusive show launch

– Kusch+Co
Booth Z2.5060
Kusch+Co will launch its newest seating range, the Creva Soft
series, exclusively at Passenger Terminal Expo. According to the
company, Creva Soft is aligned with the trend toward mobile working,
enabling passengers to use their valuable time for focused, creative
work. Visually and acoustically screened off at the rear and on both
sides by textile wall surfaces, users can talk on the phone undisturbed
and sit very comfortably in an armchair or a small berth. Cushions at the
sides and back increase privacy. An angular worktop with ergonomically
rounded corners is located on the right, protruding slightly forward,
offering space for a laptop or tablet, writing or sketch pads, documents
and, of course, a cup of coffee. Electronic devices can easily be plugged
into the power supply or a USB port and charged via integrated sockets.
Kusch+Co sees itself as a competent advisor

Track bags, save costs

The aviation industry has unquestionably
suffered over the past couple of Covid-troubled
years, and although the situation is improving on
that front, there is still economic uncertainty due to
political upheaval and unpredictable energy costs.
It’s time for some serious cost cutting – and
improved baggage handling is a good way to do it.
Even though global passenger numbers almost
doubled between 2007 and 2018, the total number
of mishandled bags each year plummeted by
47% over the same period – from 46.9 million to
24.8 million. Similarly, the annual bill footed by
the industry shrank by 43%, from US$4.22bn to
US$2.4bn, according to the SITA 2019 Baggage
IT Insights report.
This huge improvement can in large part be
attributed to the implementation of baggage track
and trace, which is a necessary feature in a baggage
handling system if an airport is to meet today’s
stringent security requirements. Individual carrier
system (ICS) technology achieves 100% track and
trace success through the simple principle of every

The best airports in the world have one strategy
in common: they provide passengers with an
excellent experience at every step of their journey.
Feedback systems play a key role in those journeys.
Not only do they help airports assess areas for
improvement but they also ensure that faults are
rectified in a timely manner.
The pandemic has undoubtedly changed
passengers’ attitudes to touching buttons and screens,
and touchless solutions are on the rise. That is why
Singapore Changi Airport, which has been using
Happymeter’s Happyhover retrofit solution for its
self-check-in kiosks and bag drop since 2020, has
deployed the same solution on its feedback systems.
Fingers are detected just above the screen, without
the need to actually touch it. Easy to use, the solution
requires neither hardware nor software modification on
the initial system, making it very economical.
The use of artificial intelligence is also on the rise
