Biological Excursion Related To
Study Of Flora And Fauna In
Letang

Biological excursion is a tour or simple visit to a place to learn, explore and
demonstrate different plant and animal species for educational purpose.
According to the curriculum of Grade XI, our Lord Buddha College also
conducted an educational trip to Letang on Mangsir 23,2080.
Letang Community Forest is situated in Letang municipality of Province No. 1 of
Morang district. It lies to the South Eastern part of Nepal. It is about 492m
above the sea level that occupies an area of 219 [Link]. It is very much rich in
biodiversity & varieties of Flora and Fauna can be found there. Such things
make Letang an awful place for excursion.

a) To collect different plant spp. & prepare their herbarium.
b) To determine the temperature & pH value of soil of undisturbed
region of Letang community forest.
c) To determine the average tree density of Letang community forest.
d) To detect the pH & total dissolved solid (T.D.S.) value of water
collected from Chisang River of Letang community forest.
e) To observe & know about the habit and habitat of various birds &
animals and study about forest ecosystem.
[Link] & METHODS:-
Various tools & materials like polythene bags, scissor, bottle, knife, rope,
newspaper, thermometer, etc. were used during the collection of different spp.
For eg; knife was used to peel out the Lichen from the tree, rope was used to
encircle the particular area of trees, spatula was used to take out the plants, etc.

While wandering & researching around Letang community forest, we observed
& collected many plant and animal species that are enlisted below:-
S.N. Common Name Scientific Name
1. Lichen Lecanora conizaeoides
2. Fern Polypodiaceae dryopteris
3. Mushroom Agaricus campestris
4. Moss Funaria hygrametrica
5. Spirogyra Spirogyra condensata
6. Liverwort Marchantia polymorpha
7. Fish Labeo rohita
8. Snail Helix
9. Frog Hoplobatrachus tigrinus
10. Spider Araneae reclusa
Similarly, we determined the temperature & pH value of soil of Letang
community forest by digging the soil & putting the thermometer in it. After
few minutes, we found the temperature of soil to be 19°C and pH value to be
ranging from 5.8 to 6.2
Likewise, we also detected the pH & total dissolved solid value of water of Chisang
River which was found to be 8.3 & 99 parts per million respectively at
temperature 22.9 °C.
Likewise, for refrence we also detected the pH & total dissolved solid value of
distillated drinkable jar water which was found to be 7.3 & 44 parts per million at
25.5°C.
Finally, the average tree density of Letang community forest was determined
with the help of rope. In an area of 100m square, we found total 6 trees,
including many other small and shurbs.

•The deforestation was extreme on those hills of Letang Community Forest.
•Unmanaged cultivation has resulted into landslide and soil erosion.
•Overgrazing and over exploitation of plant and endangered species may have
resulted in their extinction.
•Different types of rocks like sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks
were observed.
•Different types of ecosystem was observed.
•The difference in climatic condition with increase in height was observed.
•The temperature was much hotter than previous years.

•Human settle towards the forest area should be reduced.
•Proper system to manage the visitors of this area should be made.
•Public participation for the preservation of the site should be increased.
•Special provision should be made for keeping environment clean.

We really found Letang community forest a fabulous place for studying &
researching about varieties of Flora & Fauna. This excursion tour provided us a
great chance to interact with the nature and it’s creatures. We learnt about the
residence or habitat of different organisms & their relation with surrounding.
As a whole, the field trip conducted by our Lord Buddha College really became
a fruitful & informative journey for all the students of Class XI.
