- confide (v): to tell sth secret or personal to someone who you trust not to tell anyone else – giãi bày
e.g. She confided that most of her clients were actors.
- quota (n): a fixed, limited amount or number that is officially allowed – chỉ tiêu
e.g. The country now has a quota on immigration.
- proof (n): a fact or piece of information that shows that something exists or is true – bằng chứng
e.g. The police have no definitive proof of her guilt.
- vocational (adj): (of an educational course or a qualification) providing knowledge and skills that
prepare you for a particular job – (thuộc) nghề nghiệp
e.g. The Swedes regard vocational training as a part of a young person's education.
- trivial (adj): having little value or importance – thường, không quan trọng
e.g. I don't know why he gets so upset about something so trivial.
- intense (adj): extreme and forceful or (of a feeling) very strong – dữ dội, mãnh liệt
e.g. He suddenly felt an intense pain in his back.
- prove (v): to show a particular result after a period of time – chứng minh, chứng tỏ
e.g. The dispute over the song rights proved impossible to resolve.
- in the firing line: likely to be criticized, attacked, or got rid of
e.g. He found himself in the firing line for his sexist remarks.
- red line (n): a limit beyond which someone's behaviour is no longer acceptable
e.g. The pirates had crossed a red line, and there would be no giving in to their demands.
- point of no return (n): the stage at which it is no longer possible to stop what you are doing and
when its effects cannot now be avoided or prevented
e.g. Scientists fear that global warming has gone beyond the point of no return.
- attainment (n): the act of achieving something – sự đạt được
e.g. The group's investment objectives include the attainment of long-term capital growth.
- acquisition (n): the process of getting something – sự giành được, sự đạt được
e.g. The acquisition of huge amounts of data has helped our research enormously.
- extension (n): the fact of reaching, stretching, or continuing; the act of adding to something in order
to make it bigger or longer – sự mở rộng, sự gia hạn
e.g. The extension of police powers in the province has been heavily criticized.
- expansion (n): the increase of something in size, number, or importance – sự mở rộng, sự phát triển
e.g. We need a dynamic expansion of trade with other countries.
- for all: despite – dù, mặc dù. bất chấp
e.g. For all her qualifications, she's still useless at the job.
- in the offing: going to happen soon
e.g. With an election in the offing, the mayor is getting nervous.
- billboard (n): a very large board on which advertisements are shown, especially at the side of a road
– panô quảng cáo
e.g. On the highway we passed dozens of billboards showing his smiling face.
- sideboard (n): a piece of furniture with a flat top and cupboards at the bottom, usually used for
holding glasses, plates, etc. – tủ búp phê
e.g. All plain cooked vegetables are also handed round from the sideboard.
- puppy fat (n): fat that a child sometimes has that disappears as the child grows older
e.g. He's a little overweight but it's just puppy fat.
- blow hot and cold: to sometimes like or be interested in something or someone and sometimes not,
so people are confused about how you really feel
e.g. He's been blowing hot and cold about the trip to Brazil.
- lease (v): to make a legal agreement by which money is paid in order to use land, a building, a
vehicle, or a piece of equipment for an agreed period of time – cho thuê
e.g. The building's 60 units are currently leased to students of the university.
- endorsement (n): the act of saying that you approve of or support something or someone – sự chứng
thực, sự xác nhận, sự tán thành
e.g. He hoped to secure quick endorsement of the plan from the president.
- disruptive (adj): causing trouble and therefore stopping something from continuing as usual – gây
rối
e.g. His teacher described him as a noisy, disruptive influence in class.
- disastrous (adj): extremely bad or unsuccessful – tàn khốc
e.g. Such a war would be disastrous for the country.
- premature (adj): happening or done too soon, especially before the natural or suitable time – sớm,
non; hấp tấp
e.g. The money raised for the hospital will go towards heart monitoring equipment for premature
babies.
- potential (adj): possible when the necessary conditions exist – tiềm năng
e.g. A number of potential buyers have expressed interest in the company.
- surface (n): the surface of a situation or person is what they appear to be, or the features they have
that are not hidden or difficult to see – bề ngoài
e.g. On the surface, this seems like a difficult problem, but in fact there's an easy solution to it.
- drive sth home: to say something clearly and with a lot of force so that you are certain people
understand it
e.g. She really drove home the message that we need to economize.
- poverty-stricken (adj): a poverty-stricken person or place is suffering from the effects of being
extremely poor – nghèo nàn
e.g. Some beggars are neither poverty-stricken nor homeless.
- exploitation (n): the use of something in order to get an advantage from it – sự khai thác, sự lợi dụng
e.g. Their goal is to protect the Antarctic and its resources from future commercial exploitation.
- out of sb’s depth: not having the knowledge, experience, or skills to deal with a particular subject or
situation
e.g. I was out of my depth in the advanced class, so I moved to the intermediate class.
- cordon off sth: if people in authority, such as the police, cordon off a building or area, they put
something around it in order to stop people from entering it – phong tỏa
e.g. They've cordoned off the whole area because of a suspected bomb.
- give an account of sth: if you give an account of something that has happened, you describe it
e.g. She gave a thrilling account of her life in the jungle.
