Introduction
Mental disorders are characterized by a combination of abnormal thoughts,
perceptions, emotions, behavior, and relationships with others. Mental disorders
include depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychoses,
dementia, and developmental disorders including autism. According to World
Health Organization, depression is one of the leading causes of disability and
suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. In recent
years, there has been increasing acknowledgement of the significant role mental
health plays in achieving global development goals, as illustrated by the
inclusion of mental health in the Sustainable Development Goals.
The growing impetus of the market is attributed to factors such as increase in
prevalence of mental disorders and rising geriatric population. Mental health
conditions are increasing worldwide. Mainly because of demographic changes,
there has been a 13% rise in mental health conditions and substance use
disorders in the last decade (to 2017). According to the World Health
Organization, mental health conditions now cause 1 in 5 years lived with
disability. Around 20% of the world’s children and adolescents have a mental
health condition, with suicide the second leading cause of death among 15-29-
year-olds.
Approximately one in five people in post-conflict settings have a mental health
condition. Mental health conditions can have a substantial effect on all areas of
life, such as school or work performance, relationships with family and friends
and ability to participate in the community. Two of the most common mental
health conditions, depression and anxiety, cost the global economy US$ 1
trillion each year. Despite these figures, the global median of government health
expenditure that goes to mental health is less than 2%. Moreover, Covid-19
pandemic and the associated lockdown in countries across the globe have
further escalated the mental health disorders in Individuals.
Furthermore, rising geriatric population is also accelerating the market demand.
It is estimated that between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world’s
population over 60 years will nearly double, from 12% to 22%. According to
the World Health Organization, over 20% of adults aged 60 and over suffer
from a mental or neurological disorder (excluding headache disorders) and
6.6% of all disability among people over 60 years is attributed to mental and
neurological disorders. Prescription drugs, residential treatment, and outpatient
mental health treatment make up the majority of the costs for mental health
treatment. Therefore, the rise in cost of mental health programs is hindering the
market growth.
So, surging digitalization and growing smartphone & internet penetration are
expected to increase the utilization of mental health apps across the globe.
Further, Covid-19 have increased the chances of medical professionals and
patients adopting mental health apps. In addition, shifting trends from
traditional methods of care to patient-centric and personalized care are
supporting the adoption of mental health apps. Thus, growing investments in
digital mental health is projected to present a lucrative opportunity for market
expansion.
In today's fast-paced and digitally connected world, access to mental health
support has undergone a transformative evolution. Online counselling and
mental health services have emerged as a vital resource for individuals seeking
help with their emotional well-being. This innovative approach combines the
convenience of technology with the expertise of licensed therapists and mental
health professionals to offer a wide range of support and interventions, all from
the comfort and privacy of one's own space. Online counselling platforms
provide an accessible and flexible solution for those dealing with various mental
health concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, and
more. This introduction explores the profound impact of online counselling and
mental health services, highlighting their benefits, effectiveness, and the
fundamental role they play in promoting overall emotional wellness.
With the potential to break down geographical barriers and eliminate the stigma
associated with traditional therapy, online counselling services have
democratized mental health care. Individuals can now connect with licensed
professionals regardless of their location, schedule, or mobility. Moreover, these
platforms offer a diverse range of therapeutic modalities, including video calls,
instant messaging, and virtual support groups, enabling users to choose the
format that best suits their needs. As we delve deeper into this subject, we will
examine the advantages and considerations associated with online counselling
and mental health services, explore the various ways technology is leveraged to
deliver quality care, and ultimately, underscore the significance of these
services in promoting emotional well-being and resilience in an increasingly
digital world.
Target Market
Mental health problems are common in India and if left untreated, they pose
serious and costly consequences such as associated chronic disease cost, loss of
productivity, increasing suicide rates with untreated or under-treated mental
illness being the prime cause of suicides. The target population for this app will
comprise people seeking mental or behavioral health counselling, ranging
mostly in the age group of 12 and over, both males and females, covered
through health plans, and much more. An informed consent would be taken
before beginning the counselling for any patient over the video conferencing. In
case of customers who are age 18 or younger, consent will be required from the
legal guardian.
An environmental scan conducted on behalf of BC campus identified a number
of needs regarding the target audiences for mental health and wellness
education and training. The following information outlines the particular needs
for each group.
All Students
The broad audience is all students; however, specific groups were identified for
whom a lack of resources is a key issue. International, Indigenous, and graduate
students make up these specific groups.
The most notable challenges for students are as follows:
• Finding the time and effort required to attend and “survive” school
• Mental load from uncertainty and external pressures
• Availability of resources that support different barriers
• Managing multiple demands
• Building day-to-day resilience (BC campus, 2020)
Faculty and Staff
The broad audience is all faculty; however, it was noted that frontline staff are
in most need of mental health and wellness education and training:
Qualitative interviews revealed that student mental health training for faculty
and staff was a gap particularly for sessional faculty and new employees.
Furthermore, they highlighted that educating faculty to support student mental
health in the classroom was an unmet need.
The environmental scan identified a lack of resources for the following specific
groups:
• TAs/lab assistants and sessional
• New hires
• Frontline staff (e.g., security, coaches, academic advisors, accessibility
assessment coordinators, department secretaries)
The most notable challenges for faculty and staff are as follows:
• Establishing a boundary of responsibility
• Mental load
• Clarity in role
• Clarity around what to do/who to contact if a specific situation arises (BC
campus, 2020.
