PROBLEM
A W 150x30 compression member has a length of 4.60 meters and the

ends are pin connected. The steel used is A 36 with Fy = 248 MPa.
Compute the design compressive strength for LRFD and allowable

compressive strength for ASD.
Properties of W150x30;
A = 3790 mm²
Ix = 17.20 x 10⁶mm⁴
Iy = 5.56 x 10⁶mm⁴
rx = 68.40 mm
ry = 38.80 mm
Es = 200,000MPa
Steel Fe =

Solution:
For maximum slenderness ratio
Fcr = (0.658 140.43 ) 248 = 118.42 MPa
Fcr is the stress capacity of W150x30
