100 words that are used in English every day and are basic English words. Some may be more familiar to
you than others, but they are all important terms to know. By understanding these words and their
definitions, you will be one step closer to mastering the English language.

In order to improve your English language skills, it is important to have a strong vocabulary. This PDF list
of 100 basic English words will help you with your studies. Learning these words will help you speak and

How to learn basic vocabulary words?

One way to learn vocabulary words is by using flashcards. On one side of the card, write the word and
on the other side, write the definition. Another way to learn vocabulary words is by using a word map. A
word map is like a map of all the words in English and their definitions. You can use a word map to learn
new words, review words, and test yourself on your knowledge of vocabulary.

In this lesson we are going to focus on 220 words that are used in English every day. The list is divided
into 10 sections, each with 22 words. It is important to learn these words and their definitions so you
can use them in your everyday life.

Section 1: Basic Words

ability

Meaning: the quality or state of being able to do something

Example: He has the ability to speak three languages.

age

Meaning: the length of time that something has existed

Example: The age of the universe is estimated to be 14 billion years.

agree

Meaning: to have the same opinion or make the same decision

Example: We agree that the best course of action is to wait and see what happens.
area

Meaning: a particular part of a place, country, or world

Example: They live in the area known as the Upper West Side.

book

Meaning: a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and
bound in covers

Example: I’m reading a book about the history of China.

build

Meaning: to construct (something) by assembling materials

Example: They are planning to build a new school in the city.

carry

Meaning: to hold or support (something) while moving it from one place to another

Example: He carried the heavy box into the other room.

cause

Meaning: to produce or result in (an effect, situation, or state of affairs)

Example: The major cause of global warming is the burning of fossil fuels.
century

Meaning: a period of 100 years

Example: This house was built in the 18th century.

change

Meaning: to make or become different

Example: The company has changed its policies regarding vacation time.

close

Meaning: to move (something) so that it covers or blocks an opening

Example: Please close the door when you leave.

common

Meaning: happening, occurring, or found often; widespread

Example: Honesty is a common trait among successful people.

company

Meaning: an organization or business that makes and sells goods or services

Example: I work for a large company in the city.


difficult

Meaning: not easy to do, make, achieve, etc.; requiring much effort, skill, or planning to be done
successfully

Example: This math problem is difficult. Can you help me?

early

Meaning: happening, occurring, or done before the usual or expected time

Example: We finished the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

face

Meaning: the front part of the head, from the forehead to the chin, where the features of the eyes,
nose, and mouth are

Example: He has a long face and a big nose.

fact

Meaning: something that is known to be true or real

Example: The fact that he was late didn’t surprise us.

family

Meaning: a group of people who are related to each other, such as parents and their children

Example: My family is large and we’re all very close.


far

Meaning: at, to, or by a great distance in space

Example: The nearest star is far from Earth.

feel

Meaning: to experience or have (an emotion, sensation, etc.)

Example: I feel happy when I’m with my friends.

finally

Meaning: after a long time or a lot of effort; at the end

Example: We’ve been working on this project for months and we’re finally finished.

find

Meaning: to discover or notice (something) by chance

Example: I found this book on the floor of the library.

play

Meaning: to engage in an activity for enjoyment or recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose

Example: The children were playing in the park.

run

Meaning: to move with great speed by pushing against the ground with your feet

Example: He can run faster than any other student in his class.

stand

Meaning: to support oneself on one’s feet in an upright position

Example: Please stand up straight.

walk

Meaning: to move along by putting one foot in front of the other so that both feet leave the ground for
an instant between steps

Meaning: to have one’s permanent home in a particular place

Meaning: to do a job, especially a paid job

Meaning: to go away from; to depart from

Meaning: to operate and control the movement of (a vehicle) while seated behind the steering wheel

remember

forget

Meaning: to fail to remember (something); to leave (something) out of consideration or account

understand

Meaning: to know the meaning of (something); to grasp the idea of (something)

watch

Meaning: to look at or observe (someone or something) carefully over a period of time, typically in order

Meaning: to take place; to occur

listen

speak

read

write

Meaning: to form (letters, words, or numbers) on a surface by making marks

Example: Write your name at the top of the page.

show

Meaning: to cause or allow (someone) to see or know something; to make (something) known

Example: Show me your hands.

try

Meaning: to attempt to do or accomplish (something); to test or put to the proof (something)

call
