INTRODUCTION
CRITICAL REVIEW OF RESEARCH WORK:

Research critique is planned, careful critical evaluation of piece of research work against the pre
specified criteria to judge the strengths and weaknesses of research study. Critique should be
balanced, where alternative suggestions must be provided to further enforce strengths and
eliminate the weakness of the study to improve overall quality of the research project.

A research critique reflects a penetrating analysis in which judicious and constructive comments
have been made about a piece of work.

Critiquing research is essential for developing and refining nursing knowledge and improve skills
of individual. However, the word critique is often linked with the word criticize, which is frequently
viewed as negative. In arts and sciences, critique takes on another [Link] is associated with
critical thinking and appraisal and requires carefully develop skills. This is also referred as
‘intellectual critique’. An intellectual critique is directed not at the person who created but at the
product of creation.

The research critique provides an appraisal of complete research that helps the investigate to
evaluate the favorable and less favorable aspects of the study. The research critique can facilitate
can facilitate the scientific potential of the research conducting a research critique requires a
background in critical analysis and skills in logical reasoning to examine the reliability and integrity
of the study.

Critiquing research involves to use of a variety of critical thinking skills in the application of
knowledge of the research process (miller and Babcock, 1996) a critique is a complete mental
process that is stimulated by raising questions. Thus, relevant questions are provided for each phase
of the critique process.

PURPOSES OF CRITICAL REVIEW OF RESEARCH CRITIQUING WORK.

1. To provide inputs regarding the strength and weaknesses of the study to the researcher.
2. To provide suggestion to the students regarding the methodological flaws in their
research project and also to evaluate the students of research by the students.
3. To judge the scientific merits of the study.
4. To take a decision whether to publish the study inn journal or not.

DEFINATION OF RESEARCH CRITIQUE:

Research critique is the mechanism to provide feedback for improvement (Polit and Beck 2006)
Critical review or commentary dealing with a literary or artistic work
(Webster’s dictionary 1999)

ELEMENTS OF RESEARCH CRITIQUE:

1. Study purpose: purpose, relevance, need, addition to body of knowledge.

2. Research design framework, sampling plan, data collection plan.
3. Literature view: comprehensive, current, sources, organization of ROL.
4. Research question: clearly stated, match the purposes.
5. Hypothesis: Variable described, clearly stated and reflects the purpose of the study

6. Study sample: target population, sampling technique, inclusion and exclusion criteria,
sample size.
7. Data collection: steps to collect the data, timing of data collection, instruments used
and reliability of tools, description of the tools, and appropriateness of the analysis
procedures.
8. Study results: hypothesis answered, limitations, generalizations possible, unexpected
findings.
9. Study recommendations: suggestions given, change in practice possible, benefits.

PHASES OF CRITIQUE PROCESS OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH.

Following are the phases of research critique process.

RATE THE SCIENTIFIC MERIT OF THE REPORT ACCORDING TO THE

FOLLOWING SCALE:
• Critique indicates that overall, the study satisfies the basic requirements of
scientific research, with the following explanations
• Critique indicates that overall, the study does not satisfy the basic requirementsof
scientific research.
• The rating for scientific merit of the report according to the scale is 3. The overall study
satisfies the basic requirements of scientific research except someminute justification of
text and mild errors in citation and references.
CONCLUSION:

The study which has been conducted by the researcher was effect of intradialytic
exercise on fatigue, electrolytes level and blood pressure in hemodialysis patients:
A randomized controlled trial. It can be studied in different setting by keeping in
mind the limitations and the changes which can be made in this study. The research
critique provides an appraisal of completed research that helps the investigator
evaluate the favorable and less favorable aspects of the study.
