Higher Education- Inclusive or Exclusive?
With the proliferation of contemporary lifestyle there comes a wide range of social dilemmas. In
terms of education, one highly debated issue today is whether higher education should be
restricted to only gifted students or should be available to all of them. Both views have their own
pros and cons so people face a lot of difficulties in deciding which one is better for individuals
and the whole society. However, personally, we concur with the idea of entitling all young people
to freely have access to college or university. This essay will attempt to discuss both views and
present our justification below.
On the one hand, it may be practical and reasonable for the government to allow only gifted
students to study at university for the following reasons. Firstly, the advocates of making only
excellent students get access to higher education claim that pursuing a bachelor degree takes a
long period of time and requires hard work. When comparing students working right after
finishing secondary education with those who spend three, four years or more pursuing further
study, they obviously have more opportunities to earn their living much earlier, get lessons from
practical experience and learn in a dynamic environment. According to the National Centre for
Education Statistics, nearly 40 percent of the youth enrolling in 4-year colleges can not graduate
Page 2
within the course duration, while the figure for vocational school learners is only 2 percent
(Gwinnett Colleges and Institute).
In addition, investment in education is not unlimited, so if it has to cover a wide range of
undergraduates, the quality of education is not effectively guaranteed. It means that with the
university availability to all students, there might not be enough highly accomplished teachers or
good facilities which provide them a perfect study environment. Only accepting bright students
can make the best use of the specialized curriculum and enhance the quality of educational
outcomes. If the registration to higher education is restricted to only gifted students, the number
of learners in each class will decrease and professors can devote more time and care to each
student. Furthermore, youngsters, who lag behind in academic performance, might not be able to
keep pace with their peers. This also can lead to the notably high potential of suffering from
pressure and some other psychological problems. Finally, these supporters also emphatically
state that in the currently significant growing industry labor plays an extremely integral role. It is
a matter of fact that there could be a lack in the supply of young workers if all students continue
their higher education. Consequently, the claim that less capable students should get into work as
soon as possible is true to some extent. From all that has been stated above, it is particularly true
that a bachelor degree is fairly complicated for everyone to achieve as it requires time, effort, and
the total number of students can make the quality of further education more aggrandized, hence,
the speed of developing the country is much faster.
On the other hand, everyone needs to be granted the same opportunity to pursue a college or
university that matches their interests and capabilities. First of all, education is a right, not a
Page 3
privilege. According to article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "Everyone has
the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages.
Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made
generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit".
The right to education is legally guaranteed for all without any discrimination. Someone can be
impoverished and illiterate, but they still have the right to study and grow. Secondly, the lack of
high-quality human resources has a huge impact on a country's development. Education is
essential to a highly skilled and productive labor force, hence increasing the rate at which people
graduate from college would have powerful effects on the economy. According to the website
American Action Forum, the real GDP growth rate of a state increases by around 0.08
percentage points for every 1 percentage point increase in the percentage of the population with
at least a bachelor's degree. As a result, if every country had raised its bachelor's degree
attainment rate by only 1% during the last decade, national economic growth would have
increased by almost $130.5 billion (Douglas, and Lee). If they have the general information
taught in college, their labour productivity will be improved. As a result, not only good students
but even those who lack mental capacity must be educated in order for the country to progress.
Higher education could give many benefits to the nation and its economy. A society that consists
of people who have experience in higher training will create a worthy-living environment, where
both education and the economy are developing. Last but not least, if a country's learning
environment is competitive for different levels of academics, it can be a great motivator for the
less qualified to exert more effort. It is also an opportunity for them to study with intelligent
students. Day by day, their knowledge and expertise will gradually progress. Warren Buffett,
Page 4
Berkshire Hathaway's chairman and CEO, has a well-known quote: "You will move in the
direction of the people that you associate with. So it's important to associate with people that are
better than yourself." Along with those genuine people, it is conceivable to conclude that people
will achieve better achievements by working as hard as they can. The luckiest thing for each
person is to meet someone credible to go with and overcome every difficulty in life.
In conclusion, we are of the opinion that studying higher education is a fundamental right that all
governments in the world should pursue and strengthen as long as it is available to all citizens in
all circumstances. Also, they must collaborate to make education accessible to all and to inspire
learners to develop on a regular foundation. From all that we mentioned before, higher education
holds an important part in an individual's life and it also has numerous advantages that not just an
individual, but also the country and economy can gain from its availability. If people want to
achieve something great, they must begin with tiny steps. Similarly, in order to become a wealthy
country, our citizens must first be highly educated.
