Introduction
The language is one of the most widely spoken languages worldwide, if not the first.
Thus, it is necessary to learn English so that you can communicate with other people without
having difficulties in expressing yourself, but to do so, you need to know some grammatical
forms to learn the language, and the present simple and present continuous forms are part of
these areas.
Thus, the present simple and continuous are two forms of verb conjugation used in the
English language. The first is more linked to issues that occur in the moment but without a
continuation, and the other portrays issues that happen in the present but in a continuous way.
Therefore, this work has as its theme:
General objective:
Know the present simple and the present tense continuous.
Specific objectives:
Explain the Present simple (Positive, Negative and Question forms);
Explain the Present continuous (Positive, Negative and Question forms);
Describe frequency adverbs and auxiliary verbs (Do, Be and Have)
Methodology
The methodology used to carry out the work was a bibliographic review, which
resulted in the reading and analysis of the sources, and their respective authors and links are
cited throughout the work and in the bibliographic references.
1. Present simples and present continuous
1.1. Simples present
Simple Present represents a verb tense, which has been used in habits, aspects of truth,
facts, and other daily actions that we perform.. Available in:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/mundoeducacao.uol.com.br/amp/ingles/simple-present.htm.
Because, in an attempt to emphasize the actions we carry out in a moment in the
present or daily, the simple present is always used. Because, the process of conjugating the
verb in this tense is variable in relation to what happens in Portuguese or another language,
since the conjugation is only done for a specific person and not for all pronouns. Available in:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/mundoeducacao.uol.com.br/amp/ingles/simple-present.htm.
The Simple Present presents formation through the key or main verb in base modes, in
affirmative sentences, with the use of the verb (do) as an auxiliary, in negative and
interrogative sentences..
1.1.1. Use
As described above, this tense is used to describe and indicate events occurring in our
everyday lives. It can relate some historical facts, and then it can mention some habits and
others, but without straying from the context. Available in:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/mundoeducacao.uol.com.br/amp/ingles/simple-present.htm.
1.1.1.1. Affirmative form
Verbs conjugated in the simple present in affirmative sentences do not use the auxiliary do.
Example:
We drink tea every morning.
I always wake up early
1.1.1.2. Negative form
The negative mode of the simple present is made by conjugating it with the main verb,
and then adding do and in front of it adding not, or it can be does plus not. But when you want
to use the third conjugation or person, the verb does not need to change, the does can still
remain. Available in:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/mundoeducacao.uol.com.br/amp/ingles/simple-present.htm.
According to the above source, The verb form can use the form of the contraction that
helps, such as don't, but it can also use does not. But the latter when they are non-formal texts.
Ex:
She didn't hit on purpose.
I didn't go home.
1.1.1.2. Interrogative form
In the interrogative form of the present simple is applied to questions.
Example:
Do you go to school every day?
Did you go to work today?
1.2. Present continuouns
The Present Continuous refers
It is the verbal conjugation or time, which consists of highlighting the events that
occur in the present but that are being unfolded. (Ulbricht 2020).
Furthermore, in the sentences of this verb tense, they indicate occurrences or actions
that at the moment ss speaks, and this verb is verified in periods of decision making, which is
why the adverbial words used in this verb are at this moment, now, and others that indicate an
action in progress. (Santos, 2017).
Example:
He's playing right now;
She is doing activities.
1.2.1. Affirmative form:
I am playing football
I'm going to school
1.2.2. Negative form
In negative moods, (not) is introduced right after the verb (to be).
Example: I am not watching TV. (I'm not watching TV).
1.2.3. Interrogative form:
In the interrogative form, the auxiliary verb to be appears at the beginning of the
sentence, being performed as follows:
Example:
Are you playing football?
What are you doing?
1.3. Adverbs of frequency and auxiliary verbs (Do,Be e Have);
Adverbs of frequency are a set of terms or words that are used to indicate the number
of times a certain action is performed. So, just like in Portuguese, in English too, frequency
verbs indicate a scale of always or never. Available in: https://www.letmetell.com/blog/como-
utilizar-os-adverbios-de-frequencia-em-ingles/.
Ex:
You are always late;
You’re always complaining;
I’m very busy so I hardly ever have time to watch TV. (Boyd, 2020).
Regarding auxiliary verbs, these are part of a variety of verbs with the purpose of
helping the key verb in order to determine what is wanted in different times.. (ABA, S/d).
Ex:
I have often considered becoming a soccer plater.
I can never remember his. (Boyd, 2020).
Conclusion
Arrived at this point, it is concluded that, Simple Present is the verb tense. Simple
Present is used to talk about habits, truths, facts, customs, day-to-day activities, among other
situations
The verb tenses studied in this work are important for daily communication, through
their description of current events in a simple way.
So, when we want to indicate or express an action in the present that is finished, that
is, without the intuition of progress, it is always necessary to use the simple present, because
it narrates events that occur in the present through facts, historical events and pure emotion .
But when it comes to indicating the occurrence of the present and that they are in progress, it
is recommended to use the present tense continuatons. This verbal form is very suitable for
such an action, as it portrays a time or an action in progress.
